New Zealand North or South Island; Which to Visit?
Are you planning to visit New Zealand but not sure what the differences are between the North or South Island? Do you only have enough time to visit one island? You should visit both islands if you have the time. Here is some helpful information to help you decide which to visit.
Both he North and South Islands are different from each other. Each island has it’s own scenery, wildlife and amazing cities!
Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!
The North Island was the first island to be settled by the Maori. There are museums, activities, performances, traditional hangi dinners and more. Cities on the North Island will be more expensive than the smaller South Island cities. The North Island has Auckland and Wellington where the major airports are. Auckland has great dining, landmarks, and diverse experiences.
The South island is more rugged and agricultural than the North Island. It is known for more of it’s landscape and activities, whereas the North has larger cities and beaches more suited for swimming.
Beaches, Mountains and Landscape
The North Island is known for it’s gorgeous beaches and geothermal hotspots. Rotorua has hot springs and mud pools that bubble. Both islands have beaches but the North Island’s beaches are white sand and great for swimming. You will find beautiful bays and harbors here. Lord of the Rings was filmed here. Surfing is great here too.
The South Island is larger and is where you will find volcanoes, the Southern Alps, glaciers, Milford Sound and Mount Cook. As you travel further South the temperature gets colder. The north Island is warmer and has subtropical regions. If you want adventure, you will want to head to Queenstown, the adventure capital.
Both Islands have great wines as they both have large wine making regions. The North Island has some of the best wine and wineries. Auckland has great restaurants and bars. If you can only visit one winery, hit the South Island and visit the country’s largest winery. The South Island also has incredible seafood like fresh lobster, crayfish and shellfish.
Bottom line: visit both islands if you can. If you want warmer climate, bigger cities experience and culture, Visit the North Island. If you prefer to see more landscape and activities, head to the South Island.

Staff gets paid a fair minimum wage so they aren’t relying on tips. But you may want to leave a tip for excellent service.
Don’t get Offended When Aussies Swear
Aussies swear a lot. Bugger and crap are also just normal day-to-day words. So are other words that you can probably guess. Prime Ministers have even said the f-bomb in public situations.
In Australia they drive on the left. There are also a lot of rules that are strictly enforced. Don’t go over the speed limit either.
Don’t Drink & Drive
This should be a given. The blood alcohol limit in Australia is 0.05%. Don’t even try to drink and drive, police set up random alcohol and drug testing called ‘booze buses’.
Do Be Aware That Australia is Very BIG
Australia is the planet’s sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the USA, and Brazil. Most cities are very spread out and it isn’t that easy to just drive from one city to the next, unless you want to drive for 10 hours.

Australia takes a while to get to but it is so worth the travel time. When you plan a trip to Australia you need to know where to go, how much time to spend and how long it takes to get there. You don’t want to feel panicked or rushed when you are visiting Australia. If you have 8 weeks, go for that long. That still isn’t enough to see everything, but if you have limited time, go for at least 10 days. Here is a short guide on how much time you need minimum to visit some of Australia’s cities.
Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!
Eastern Australia has most of the cities and activities that will keep you busy. Western Australia (Perth) is also well worth the trip. Important to note is that it is a 5 hour flight between the 2 coasts, it is like flying from New York to Denver.
Visit more than 1 City
If you are coming from the United States or Europe, you will probably fly for more than 10 hours. It would be a shame to visit only 1 city. Remember, each city is different looking, feeling and offers an array of different activities. Visiting the East Coast is fairly easy as most of the flights are around 1 – 2 hours and can be pretty cheap. Plan to visit at least 2 cities and always ask a travel team agent what cities are the best to visit by calling 1-800-788-0829.
You need at least 5 Nights to Visit Sydney (Ideally)

These awesome cities need 2 nights to get a feel of. They are also less spread our than Melbourne or Sydney. Adelaide is a sophisticated city full of history, food, wine, elegance and is full of festivals and events. Even cooler, is that you can explore Adelaide by bike.
Brisbane is a very underrated city that you should visit. It is full of nightlife, a fantastic art scene, and the starting point to going to the Gold or Sunshine coast. It is also home to the biggest koala sanctuary in the world, and has awesome hiking, biking and a lot more!

New Zealand was made for road trips, one of the best ways to see the country is a self-drive vacation. You are going to fall in love with one of the most beautiful places on earth. Here are some great tips for your Road Trip thru New Zealand…
Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!
The biggest decision on your road trip is choosing what type of car you want to drive. If your are planning on driving in the mountains or during winter then you might want an SUV or 4 wheel drive, otherwise and you can probably do with a standard size car plus it saves money on gas.
Make sure you familiarize yourself with driving on the left side of the road.
Be prepared for different roads.
Many roads are asphalt but in rural areas you might encounter gravel or unsealed roads. Drive slower on these roads so you don’t get hit with stray rocks that can chip the windshield or body.
Take in the beauty, but don’t get distracted.
There are so many gorgeous places to take photos, you will probably want to hop out everywhere to take a snap. Make sure you don’t just pull over on major highways or anywhere; keep safe and make sure there is a safe place to pull over before taking a picture.
The weather in New Zealand can vary greatly depending on the region. Check the forecast for your route and pay attention to any warnings. During heavy rains there can be landslides or strong wind conditions that can make it hard to drive in.
Watch out for wildlife.
Outside of cities can sometimes be remote and may have ‘traffic’ from sheep or cows crossing the roads. Keep an eye out for these animal traffic jams.
The Climate of Australia varies a great deal. Australia is very large and is made up of 8 states and territories. Read this guide to prepare you for the vast differences in the climate of Australia.
Since Australia is located int he Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are completely opposite to the seasons in North America and Europe. The North has a tropical zone, which makes up about % 40 of Australia and has 2 seasons, either wet or dry.
During October – March is the Spring and Summer seasons and it is warm or hot everywhere. This is the time for most tourists to visit. During the Autumn and winter months of April – September you will find warm days and cool nights in Northern and central Australia, and even some snow in some areas of the Southeast.
