Drive on the left side of the road.
Make sure you familiarize yourself with driving on the left side of the road.
Be prepared for different roads.
Many roads are asphalt but in rural areas you might encounter gravel or unsealed roads. Drive slower on these roads so you don’t get hit with stray rocks that can chip the windshield or body.
Take in the beauty, but don’t get distracted.
There are so many gorgeous places to take photos, you will probably want to hop out everywhere to take a snap. Make sure you don’t just pull over on major highways or anywhere; keep safe and make sure there is a safe place to pull over before taking a picture.
Know the weather.
The weather in New Zealand can vary greatly depending on the region. Check the forecast for your route and pay attention to any warnings. During heavy rains there can be landslides or strong wind conditions that can make it hard to drive in.
Watch out for wildlife.
Outside of cities can sometimes be remote and may have ‘traffic’ from sheep or cows crossing the roads. Keep an eye out for these animal traffic jams.
