Costa Rica Elements Self-Drive

This 7 day round trip from San Jose is the ultimate sustainable travel option through Costa Rica, introducing you to its most famous volcano, Arenal, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

Towering above fern, strawberry and coffee estates, the perfect conical shape of the active Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic symbols. The volcano has been ‘resting’ since 2010, but its level of activity has turned the surrounding area into a breathtaking ecological environment. Go rafting, horseback or bike riding, rappelling through waterfalls, zip lining or caving. Or just wander through the expansive forest, admiring abundant wildlife.

More than 100 species of mammals and 400 species of birds can be found in Monteverde Cloud Forest, so a wildlife walk is a must. Consider a guided nocturnal walk to see some of the area’s more elusive creatures. Then explore the forest canopy along a series of hanging bridges and walkways. This tour also includes a visit to a butterfly garden and the chance to learn about the many reptiles that populate the area.

Costa Rican authorities have set aside one-third of the country as protected and eco tourism is taken seriously. Embark on the best sustainable travel option that Costa Rica has to offer.

A guide from our local representative will meet you outside the terminal before an introductory briefing about Costa Rica, where they will review the itinerary with you and provide you with your welcome kit. 2

San Jose to Doka and La Paz Waterfall Gardens to Arenal

After breakfast at the hotel, your rental car will be waiting for you at the hotel. After a quick briefing and receiving your documentation, maps and GPS, you head off to visit the family-owned Doka Coffee Estate, located on the outskirts of the Poas Volcano, where you will learn about the production, the harvesting, the processing plant, and the roasting of the grain.

Guided by an expert, visitors will receive extensive information, which will make this activity an incomparable experience. The tour begins at the seedbed. There you will observe and receive explanations concerning the development process of the plant up to the point of the picking of the ripe grain. You will also learn about the history of the estate, its owners, the production and varieties of plants, the geography of the area, and the traditional ways of cultivating coffee.

The second station is the oldest humid coffee processing plant in the world, declared to be an Architectural Heritage for Humanity site in 2003; it works using hydraulic power. You will witness the first classification of the grains followed by the process of de-pulping of first and second quality coffee in the grinders. Next, the natural honey of the grain is channeled towards the fermentation tanks and a process is carried out that is significant to the taste of the coffee. The coffee that has been dried in the Guardiola or on the patios under the sun is stored in the warehouse. This grain is ready to be peeled, and then exported or roasted in the country.

Finally, the roasting plant Cafe Tres Generaciones is visited, where you will learn about its use; you will be able to observe the different types of roasts that are offered.

Then you carry on traveling towards La Paz Waterfall Gardens hosting a wide variety of plants and bird life amongst stunning scenery. These gardens are a one-stop introduction to all of Costa Rica. It offers an interactive experience through its park, aimed at bringing families and visitors into closer contact with Costa Rica’s natural resources. At La Paz, you will walk down a trail leading to a series of spectacular waterfalls amongst a dense cloud and rain forest. Moreover, you will also visit the hummingbird gallery with 26 documented species, the snake farm, the aviary, the butterfly garden, the Jungle Cats and the Frog Exhibit.

This learning experience concludes with lunch included at the site, buffet style. Following lunch the trip continues to La Fortuna, the closest town to the Arenal volcano.

Arenal Volcano

Drive from your hotel to the National Park for your tour of the Park and Ecotermales Hot Springs. At present, the volcano’s green area is located mainly on its eastern side; other small green segments can be found on the north and the south.

During this gentle hike, you’ll be able to enjoy the most extraordinary view of the colossus, walking around its base. The hike begins on a trail close to the volcano, a path that will take you through the forest and the area destroyed by the 1969 eruption (now in regeneration process). The whole hike takes around 2.5 hours.

After the walk, participants can enjoy a healthy and relaxing soak at Ecotermales. This place guarantees your visit will be unforgettable from the moment you arrive. You will immerse yourself in the energy generated by the natural beauty of the surrounding rainforest and the natural volcanic thermal springs. Ecotermales has created 6 elegant areas, with pools of differing temperature (37 degree Celsius /99 Degree Fahrenheit to 104 degree Fahrenheit /41 degree Fahrenheit) and one fresh waterfall. These combine to create a natural spa of endless comfort.

4

Arenal Volcano to Monteverde

After Breakfast, you will drive to Monteverde. Once there, you will check in at the hotel and the rest of your day at leisure. There are a number of optional activities available (own expense).

Monteverde is the most appropriate way to introduce visitors to the wildlife sanctuary it preserves. This community, secluded on a 1400-metre high plateau, was founded in 1951 by a group of North American Quakers. Although some of the original virgin forest was cleared for dairy farming, the founders’ environmental consciousness, together with help from private organizations, led to the creation of a biological preserve that hosts one of the richest ecological systems in the country. Due to its location at a relatively high altitude, Monteverde’s climate is rather fresh.

Monteverde Reserve

This morning, you will will drive from your hotel to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. It is one of the most important private reserves in Costa Rica, with a total of 3,500 hectares of land. Enjoy a four hour nature tour through the Reserve where a local professional naturalist guide will show and give you explanations concerning all the different macro/micro flora and fauna. Visit the Golden Toad’s unique habitat; see birds like the resplendent quetzal (the most beautiful bird of the Americas), the three-wattled Bell Bird, and the Black Faced Solitaire.

This afternoon, you will enjoy the El Trapiche Tour. This is a Costa Rican Family project. It begins with a walk through the farm, giving you the chance to observe the different crops; also, you will cross a small area of forest where you can occasionally spot wildlife. You will get to see the farm’s tilapia (a kind of fish) project, banana plantation, arracache, macadamia nuts, oranges, sugar cane, and coffee crops. During the walk, your guide will show you the process involved in growing sugar cane and inform you about its natural history. They will also give you the chance to taste the sugar cane and its various derivatives. Once this is over, you will move on to coffee’s production process, starting from the planting and continued with the crushing, peeling, and machine roasting.

Additionally, you will be invited to make a quick oxcart trip (you have the option of walking as well); the journey starts from the sugar cane plantation and ends at the mill. Once at the mill, you will witness the extraction of the sugar cane’s juice. You will learn the artisan’s way of processing sugar cane and its different products.

The tour continues with an exhibit and explanation of some traditional Costa Rican artefacts, such as a wood stove, the marimba (musical instrument), and the pylon. You will also see the manufacturing of the ‘Saca de Guaro’ (a liquor distilled with pure water).

The tour ends with an opportunity to eat some ‘arracache’ served with a drink (lemonade, coffee or aguadulce – hot drink made from sugarcane). You will be given a small ‘tapa dulce’ (sweet made from sugar cane) as a souvenir.

Monteverde to San Jose

Today, you will visit the Butterfly Garden in Monteverde. This is an educational project with the purpose of educating visitors concerning the conservation of different species of butterflies and arachnids. In this garden, forty-five to fifty different types of butterflies are raised throughout the year, as well as a great variety of other arthropods. During the tour, you will learn about the different defense mechanisms, feeding habits, and behavior of Costa Rican butterflies.

Following you will visit the amphibian and reptile garden. The project houses natural environments to guarantee the animals’ comfort as well as to provide security for visitors. All of the animals are housed terrariums that imitate the animal’s natural habitat and that allow visitors to observe them in complete safety. During this tour you will take a guided tour through the serpentarium, acquiring knowledge about poisonous and non-poisonous snakes.

Next we visit the fabulous world of bats. Visitors will learn all manner of details concerning their behaviour and natural habits.

Is Australia or New Zealand in Your Future Travel Plans?

IS AUSTRALIA OR NEW ZEALAND IN YOUR FUTURE TRAVEL PLANS?

When each country opens up to visitors from North America, things may be quite different. In addition to your passport and entry visa, you may need a doctor’s certification of your current health status, or perhaps a vaccination certificate. A temperature check at the airport might be required. There may be fewer trans-Pacific flights, with some carriers no longer providing service. Accommodation will be harder to book as Australian and New Zealand residents will be very active touring each other’s countries. Some hotels and tour operators may not even make it through this crisis. Through it all, Travel Team is here to help you navigate the new world of travel and help you plan the trip of your dreams!

WHAT TRAVEL TEAM IS CURRENTLY DOING FOR OUR CLIENTS:

We are actively booking our land packages for 2021 travel, all confirmable with a small deposit. We are also providing a preliminary air itinerary and quote (if required), to help plan the travel budget, and making case-by-case recommendations as to when airline tickets should be secured. This allows for some flexibility and peace of mind. Call or email us for a preliminary quote!

On a Live Like a Local tour, you’ll be free to do whatever you want on your vacation. Indulge in the white-sand beaches and turquoise waters or sink into the rhythms of the islands and connect to the amazing people that call the islands home. The price of this island stay includes international airfare.

The Cook Islands remain some of the best-kept secrets in the South Pacific. They’re a series of 15 islands northeast of New Zealand, halfway to Hawaii. The Cook Islands present plenty of opportunities for the kind of beach resort getaways you fantasize about, but they also offer a chance to embed yourself in island culture and live like a local in paradise. Cook Islanders are extremely friendly people, and are more than happy to welcome you to their island and help you adjust to “island time.” It’s key to relax while visiting the Cook Islands. There’s no sense of urgency here. There aren’t even traffic lights! Cook Islanders take their time and enjoy every moment of the day. If you want to experience the authentic Cook Islands, slow down and take in everything these wonderful islands have to offer.

On arrival in the Cook Islands, you will be taken to one of our recommended self-contained accommodations for a 12-night stay. If you want to blend into the local rhythms, stay on Rarotonga, the largest of the islands. Most Cook Islanders get around by scooter or bicycle, so rent one to travel around the island. If you spot a particularly gorgeous lagoon off the coast, or one of the island’s many white coral and limestone churches, stop and take a photo. Talk to the local groundskeeper to learn about the church’s history or stroll along the beach to see what else the water reveals to you. Traveling by cycle or scooter lets you move at your own pace and experience the Kia Orana spirit.

Your time in the Cook Islands can be taken at your leisure in the gorgeous waters of the Pacific or around the colourful island interiors. Your stay also comes with a guided tour of the Highland Paradise Cultural Centre, to educate you on island customs and history, as well as a trek across the island with a colourful local character called Pa who will regale you with stories about native myths and legends and introduce you to the indigenous flora and fauna. You’ll also enjoy a hosted dinner at three different local family homes.

Days 1 – 4:  Whitsundays

Accommodation in the Whitsundays

The waves of its crystal-clear blue waters wash onto silver beaches beneath the warm sun. It comes as no surprise that the Whitsundays are celebrated as some of the finest beach spots in the country. The chain of 74 islands in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland is home to luxury resorts and the underwater wonders of a marine paradise.

Airlie Beach, in particular, is a great starting point, a coastal town from where you can set off on your adventures, exploring the hidden secrets of the region and the allure of the Great Barrier Reef. Enjoy great snorkeling spots or scuba diving sessions amongst the coral, interacting with curious fish and other marine creatures. Or simply relax on a stylish cruise, cocktail in hand and camera at the ready.

The Whitsundays is renowned as a yachting destination, also operating as a hub for kayaking, sailing, and powerboating. But it’s not all about the ocean. There are numerous rivers, creeks, and streams that run through brilliant trails and walking routes. Because of its high number of uninhabited national parks, there is always the chance to go on nature tours and journeys and spot wildlife such as enormous saltwater crocodiles.

Experience the best views of the Whitsundays with a helicopter trip over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, Heart Reef, Great Barrier Reef, and various islands.

You will be transferred from qualia’s Long Pavilion to the Hamilton Island Marina where your Atomic charter awaits.

The city of Sydney on the east coast of Australia is as idyllic is it appears from its instantly recognizable cityscape. It boasts a rich and intriguing history, famous beaches and iconic landmarks, with a diverse and friendly population, all spread around an elaborate shoreline of Port Jackson’s yacht-filled inlets, bays, and rivers.

Pubs, markets, modern restaurants, theatres and galleries old and new add an exciting, sophisticated cultural air, while the fine weather and surrounding natural wonders of New South Wales make it a very outdoorsy place, and a great base from which to explore nearby beaches, mountains, and national parks.

Sydney Harbour cruise on the Iluka

Enjoy a morning of sailing through one of the most beautiful harbours in the world aboard the Iluka yacht. Your skipper will guide you through Sydney’s intriguing history, explaining all about the city’s waters, luxury homes, leafy parks, beaches, and iconic landmarks.

Sydney Opera House tickets and private tour

The Sydney Opera House was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jorn Utzon who in 2003 received the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest honor. The citation stated that ‘There is no doubt that the Sydney Opera House is his masterpiece. It is one of the great iconic buildings of the 20th century, an image of great beauty that has become known throughout the world – a symbol for not only a city but a whole country and continent.’

On your private tour, you’ll see inside the world’s most recognizable sails – a work of art that came into existence against impossible odds – to become one of the busiest performing arts centres in the world. Working with new, rich audio-visual components, where images are projected onto the fabric of the building – the guide will take you on an emotional journey, engrossing you in a story to rival any opera plot with its dramatic twists and turns. Some 1,500 performances, from opera to circus, rock, and cabaret, are staged each year to audiences of around 1.5 million

This evening you will engage in a wonderful experience at the Tamaki Maori Village. Enroute your guide will instruct you on the rules and protocol for visiting Marae (meeting grounds). On arrival at the venue, nobody must enter the fortified village until the Powhiri (formal welcome) has been performed. The host tribe will send out a toa (warrior) who will challenge the guests, via their elected chief to ascertain if they come in peace. A Teka (peace offering) is placed and received by one of the visiting chiefs. At the Village, the Karanga, or “welcome call” will echo across the courtyard, followed by the Powhiri (welcome dance). You will then be able to enter onto the village grounds where the Tangata Whenua (people of the land) will demonstrate different activities such as poi twirling, hand games, weaponry displays, reciting chants and displaying activities of an era gone by.

The buffet style dinner will be held in the meetinghouse dining hall and will have everyone enjoying a succulent Hangi feast. The evening ends with the Poroporoaki, the official closing ceremony and you will be safely transferred back to your accommodation.
