VIEW ITINERARY

DAY 1  Arrive Auckland

Welcome to Auckland! After clearing customs and immigration you will be transferred from Auckland Airport to your hotel in the central city. After checking in and getting yourself settled, turn your roving eye outside and enjoy a free afternoon in the ‘City of Sails’. Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, with plenty of sights, shopping and street appeal for even the pickiest of travellers.

DAY 2   Auckland – Waitomo Caves – Rotorua

With an early morning departure from Auckland you will be travelling southbound towards Waitomo via the city of Hamilton, which sits on the banks of the Waikato River. For over 100 years, Waitomo Glowworm Caves have attracted millions of people from all over the world. The moment you enter this subterranean wonderland, you’ll discover an ancient underground labyrinth of limestone caves and grottos. You will experience a boat trip like no other, journeying through the starry expanse of the cave while your way is lit by a multitude of tiny glowworm lights.

On completion of this tour, continue over the forested Mamaku Ranges to reach the geothermal city of Rotorua in the early afternoon. Tonight you’ll be treated to a Māori feast, as Te Pō’s cultural experience promises hours of fun, thought, and kai (indigenous food). After a formal Māori welcome, relax and enjoy a captivating performance by the local people, including traditional songs as well as the renowned haka. Following a truly delectable dinner you will be transported by people movers to enjoy the spectacular lighting of the geothermal Te Whakarewarewa Valley, and an essential hot chocolate. (D) (2 nights)

DAY 3    Rotorua

This morning you will experience more Māori culture and the amazing thermal wonderland at Te Puia. Te Puia is also home to the Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where the ancient teachings of Māori ancestors have been preserved and continue to thrive. Continue on to Rainbow Springs Nature Park, an attraction like no other. Set in 22 acres of beautiful native trees and streams, you will see a huge variety of New Zealand’s most precious inhabitants including the Kiwi Conservation Centre. New Zealand’s thriving agricultural industry is on show at the Agrodome, where you will witness a sheep shearing display and sheep dog trials.

The afternoon is at leisure to discover just how volatile this region used to be, when Rotorua fell victim to an expected pyroclastic event. On June 10th 1886, Mount Tarawera erupted, putting the world’s youngest geothermal valley of Waimangu on the global radar, and destroying the legendary Pink and White Terraces in a devastating surge of lava. Join a guided tour through this historic moment by moment as Rotorua’s landscape comes to life through stories and commentary. With unmatched scenic vistas and 360-degree panoramic views, this experience is ideal for all ages and includes an optional run into the heart of the volcanic crater.

DAY 4  Rotorua – Wellington

Drive south to Wairakei, wreathed by steam, then to Taupō. Skirt Lake Taupō and cross the volcanic landscape of the Desert Road, past the majestic peaks of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu. Continue across the fertile plains of the Manawatū and along the rugged Kāpiti coastline to Wellington. (2 nights)

Day 5  Wellington

This morning a half-day tour of the city will take in the Parliament Buildings, the ‘Beehive’, Old St Paul’s Cathedral, and panoramic views of the harbour and city from Mount Victoria, as well as a ride on the historic Cable Car (optional). This afternoon is free to explore New Zealand’s capital city further – perhaps to visit Te Papa or the Museum of City and Sea.

Day 6  Wellington – Internal Flight – Christchurch

This morning you’ll be transferred to the airport to board your domestic flight (included in your tour cost), which will take you across the Cook Strait and down the east coast of the South Island to Christchurch. On arrival you will be transferred to your accommodation.

What should you do with the rest of the day? Take it slow, sit back and relax, punting down the River Avon through the stunning Botanic Gardens.

DAY 7  Depart Christchurch

Sadly your trip has come to an end. We hope that you have thoroughly enjoyed your experiences in New Zealand. Today you will be met at your accommodation and transferred to the airport for your onward journey. Have a safe trip home. Haera rā!

From here you will marvel at views of the stunning Waimakiriri River gorge and alpine scenery on a series of breathtaking viaducts.

After a brief stop at Arthur’s Pass you will enter one of New Zealand’s longest tunnels, the Otira Tunnel, and subsequently descend through a deep valley of subtropical rainforest over a broad shallow river into the small town of Greymouth. Join your coach in Greymouth and travel through Hokitika to Franz Josef Glacier, arriving in the early evening.

If you have a spare day we’d recommend an extra night in Franz Josef to allow time to fully experience the region.

Milford Sound is nothing short of heart-stopping, inducing subconscious smiles in the hard to please and easily bored almost instantly; it’s simply magnificent. Keep an eye out for dolphins, seals and penguins!

Board the coach for Queenstown, arriving in the evening. (L)

DAY UP

Milford Sound Return Flight Upgrade (from NZ$395pp)

Upgrade your itinerary to return to Queenstown on a scenic flight taking in magnificent views of the alps, glaciers, lakes and forests of Fiordland National Park – a quick and convenient way to return to Queenstown. (Duration 35 mins.)

DAY 9  Queenstown

Today is completely at leisure to enjoy the many sights of this alpine resort town situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Queenstown offers something for everyone. You might choose to enjoy the quiet beauty and tranquility of this mountain retreat or try out some of the walking trails in the town area.

For sheer excitement,  there is white water rafting, helicopter rides, the famous jetboats, bungy jumping to pump your adrenalin, and off-road 4WD tours with plenty of river crossings. There are cruises on the lake and a visit to a high country sheep station as well as wine tasting tours. You can visit nearby Arrowtown where the main street has been preserved since the 1860s gold rush days, and you can try your luck panning for gold in the adjacent Shotover River.

DAY 10  Queenstown – Aoraki Mt Cook – Christchurch

Depart Queenstown this morning and travel north through the historic gold mining region of the Kawarau Gorge, passing through the dramatic Lindis Pass into the Mackenzie Basin. Hug the shores of Lake Pukaki before arriving at the majestic Aoraki Mt Cook Village. This region is breathtaking and full of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast.

Enjoy an optional scenic helicopter or ski plane flight (own expense), explore the treasures of New Zealand’s mountaineering history at the Sir Edmund Hillary Centre, or relax over a three-course lunch at the famous Hermitage Hotel (not included). This afternoon you will continue north to the glacial-fed, turquoise blue Lake Tekapo, where you can take the opportunity to appreciate the majestic scenery of the Southern Alps and view the solitary Church of the Good Shepherd.

Continue your journey north through the vast patchwork of the Canterbury Plains before arriving at your final destination, Christchurch.

8 Myths About Australia Debunked

8 Myths About Australia Debunked

Some people think Australia is full of cuddly koala bears, people drinking Foster’s beer, convicts and full of dangerous animals. These are actually not true – here are 8 myths about Australia that have been debunked.

1   Australia was discovered by Captain Cook

People often credit Captain James Cook with discovering Australia in 1770 but there are three problems with this idea. For one, the continent had already been ‘discovered’ by indigenous people who had been living in Australia for tens of thousands of years. Second, the Chinese had already been to Australia by the 15th century and then the Dutch in the 1600’s. Lastly, Captain Cook wasn’t even a captain at the time, he was actually a lieutenant.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

2   All Australians descended from convicts

While Britain did transport more than 160,000 convicts to Australia between 1788 and 1868, not every Australian came from these people. One-fourth of Australians were born overseas.

You might enjoy this vacation:

Sydney plus Barrier Reef from $749

3   Australians speak English

So this may be partially true, but not completely. The first Australians spoke around 300 languages before colonization. Today one in five people speak a language other than English when at home, and it commonly Chinese, Arabic and Vietnamese.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

4   The toilets flush backwards

The direction that the toilet flushes actually has nothing to do with whether on not the toilet is in the southern hemisphere. It has to do with the shape of the basin and there isn’t a correct way for a toilet to flush.

5   Koalas are bears

Koalas are actually marsupials, meaning they carry their babies in a pouch and are not related to bears.

6   Sydney is the capital

In 1901 Australia was federated but the two biggest cities, Sydney and Melbourne couldn’t agree on what city should be the capital. So Canberra is a city that was planned to settle the squabble. Canberra sits outside any state jurisdiction much like how Washington D.C. does.

7   Australia is hot

Australia is pretty warm in some areas, but it isn’t hot everywhere. Melbourne can dip to 14 degrees C in winter, as cold as a winter day in London. There is even snow in places like Thredbo and Perisher in NSW and Mount Hotham and Falls Creek in Victoria.

8  Everyone drinks Fosters

Australians actually love amber nectar and domestic brands like Victoria Bitter as well as a vibrant craft brew scene. Fosters is actually brewed in Manchester England, and is consumed there as well.

8   Watch out for the Animals

There are stray dogs all throughout Fiji so watch our as they run across the roads all the time. These guys usually are strays, so they can have fleas and other things.  You might see cows and horses wandering around.

9    Getting around & Driving in Fiji

Drive on the left hand side of Fiji. The speed limit is 80KMH (49 MPH) and the spend limit is enforced. Getting around Fiji is pretty inexpensive, taxis and buses are cheap and you will be able to save money to use to take a boat ride or buy some local goods.  Taxis are easy to flag down and the drivers are friendly.

Fiji is a very safe place to visit but you should always use caution when traveling anywhere. Use common sense for instance, avoid walking alone outside at night, it is better to take a taxi during the night time instead of walking.

Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia, as well as the Capital City of Queensland. It is set close to the Pacific Ocean, and is situated on the Brisbane River between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range. Home of the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (the only place you can still cuddle a Koala) and also Home of Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo. There are many tour options to choose from in Brisbane. Pick the ones that interest you most.

Next travel to Cairns and experience the majesty of this underwater playground. Cairns, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it’s known as the Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. View the Rainforest and Aboriginal heritage presentation at Kuranda and Cruise the Great Barrier Reef.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) is about 450 kilometers by road from Alice Springs; Uluru-Katatjuta National Park is home to the most recognized Australian landmark – Uluru (previously called Ayers Rock). World-Heritage listed, Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park covers an area of approximately 1325 square kilometers of striking landscape. In addition to the Rock the park also includes Kata Tjuta (previously called the Olgas).

Enjoy the sights of Sydney, a World Class City from your Downtown Accommodation. Experience the beauty of the Harbour, the Opera House and marvel at the expansive Sydney Harbour Bridge. Take advantage of the many tour options or just go at your own pace and enjoy the excellent restaurants and entertainment that only Sydney can offer.

Then off to Melbourne, which is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. The city itself, laid out in a large rectangle and boasting a lively and cosmopolitan pulse, sits on the northern banks of the Yarra River, about five kilometers from the bay. From cutting-edge architecture and blockbuster musicals to art exhibitions and popular festivals, Melbourne is a city where cultural pursuits are woven into the fabric of everyday life. Regional Victoria also boasts a flourishing arts scene, with impressive galleries, museums, and heritage buildings.

Take five days to explore the Victorian coastline, the Great Ocean Road. You will visit Kangaroo Island and Adelaide, each for one night. Ending in Adelaide.

Travel to Kangaroo Island, here is an island seven times the size of Singapore, literally crawling with wildlife. The koalas aren’t being cuddled – they’re relaxing at home in native trees. The seals aren’t performing – they’re lazing beside you on the beach. There are echidnas, platypus, goannas, wallabies and kangaroos, all thriving, all mesmerizing. Half the native bushland on Kangaroo Island remains just as it was when British navigator Matthew Flinders put a name to this untamed wilderness in 1802. And more than one-third of the Island is National or Conservation Park.

Adelaide is a city of great visual harmony and has a classical elegant style, superbly set beside the River Torrens between the Adelaide Hills and waters of Gulf St Vincent. Be sure and visit the Adelaide Central Market, the largest fresh produce market in the Southern Hemisphere. Another must see is the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute (Tandanya) the worlds largest display of Aboriginal culture and artifacts. Nearby in the Adelaide Hills is the National Motor Museum which comprises over 300 cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles and is considered to be one of the best displays in the world.

-In Australia there is No Free Left Turn Law like the free right hand turn laws in North America and you must yield to traffic that is approaching from the right.  ?

-Amber/yellow lights mean to stop (unless you cannot stop safely before crossing thru the intersection).

-Be aware of random police stops for breath testing; the legal limit is a BAC under 0.05%

Baggage restrictions will differ depending on what airline you are flying. Check directly with your airlines for the exact restrictions on baggage before you fly.

Credit Cards, ATM’s & Money Exchange Rates

The exchange rate is constantly changing so rates can change from day to day. The best thing is to find out the current exchange rate by visiting www.xe.com.  You should be able to use your bank card to withdraw money from ATM’s as well, just contact your bank before you travel to make sure.

Most everywhere in Australia accepts Visa, Mastercard and in some places American Express. Discover cards are not as common so you may not be able to use that as a credit card. You will also want to contact your credit card companies and bank to let them know you are traveling abroad so you don’t have your cards frozen for suspicious activity.

Power Converters & Power Adapters

Will I need to bring a power adapter to Australia?

Because the standard voltage in Australia (230 V) is different than in the Unites States (120 V), you will need a voltage converter to use your electrical appliances. Power outlets in Australia are different as well, so you will want to buy a power plug adapter and voltage converter in order to plug in your devices. You can buy these on Amazon.com for instance before you travel.

Using Mobile Phones & Making Phone Calls

Contact your cell phone carrier to see if they offer plans to use your phone abroad.  You may want to purchase an international calling plan for you trip. Don’t forget to cancel this plan once you return to the United States. You can also turn off your data roaming feature to avoid being charged roaming fees while you travel.

Can I buy a Phone Card to Use to Call the US from Australia?

You can purchase a prepaid phone card to make international calls at most gas stations or convenience stores. This might be a good option if you don’t have an International calling plan and usually come in amounts from $10 to $50 per card.

Phone Numbers & Dialing International

The Country code for Australia is ‘61’. To dial an Australian phone number from the USA you must dial ‘011’ (to dial another country) + ‘61’ the country code for Australia + local phone number.

To call the USA from Australia, dial the Australian exit code (0011) + Country code (1) + US area code & phone number; so 0011+1+310-555-5555 (as an example).

Public Holidays & Important Dates

Australia has several public holidays when banks, some stores, offices might be closed.  You will want to consider these as well as school vacations while planning your trip, as these are popular time for tourists and locals to travel.

Summer vacation for schools is from mid-December to late January. The major public holidays are New Year’s Day, Australia Day is January 26, Good Friday is April 19, Easter, Christmas is December 25 and Boxing Day is December 26. Holidays also can vary depending on the region so it’s best to check ahead of time, you can visit https://www.australia.gov.au/about-australia/special-dates-and-events/school-term-dates

Promotion Rules

This promotion is valid on new bookings only. Bookings must be made at least 14 days prior to departure date so that there is sufficient time to process the onboard credit. For bookings made within 14 days of departure, a loyalty reward equal to the amount of the earned Onboard Spending will be mailed approximately 4-6 weeks after sailing. The Onboard Spending per Cabin is based on the averaged cruise fare for passengers 1 & 2 in the cabin after all discounts, future cruise credits, past passenger discounts or other promotional or reduced rates are applied. The calculation of the cruise fare that determines the onboard credit amount excludes government fees, fuel surcharges, hotel, transfers, airfare, insurance and other fare items.

In the event of a change in the cruise rate (including the application of additional discounts) after the initial booking is made the onboard credit amount will be amended accordingly. Onboard credit amounts may reflect a combination of cruise line and agency offers. Onboard Credit will appear on guest’s account aboard the ship and must be used no later than 10PM on the last night of the cruise. Refunds will not be issued for unused onboard credits nor can they be transferred to another sailing. Some cruise lines do not permit the onboard credit to be used for gratuities or casino credits. The Onboard Credit may not be redeemed for cash; has no cash value and is not transferable. This offer is based on availability and subject to change without notice. Spending Credit for previous purchases is not permitted and guests who previously booked, cancelled and then rebooked are not eligible for this offer. Some additional restrictions may apply.

Hamilton Island

Part of the Whitsundays, and in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island is one of Australia’s most spectacular and sought-after holiday destinations. On a holiday to Hamilton Island, you’ll be surrounded by pristine white beaches, and a kaleidoscope of coral and marine life. Hamilton Island is a perfect base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and world-famous Whitehaven Beach.

There’s plenty to do during your Great Barrier Reef holiday on Hamilton Island. You can enjoy a wide selection of bars and restaurants, year-round cultural exhibitions and performances, an abundance of water sports and activities – and that’s just the start. For sailing enthusiasts, there’s the Hamilton Island Yacht Club, and for keen golfers, the Hamilton Island Golf Club is the only Australian 18-hole championship course on its own island.  Plus, with six different levels of accommodation to choose from across the island – ranging from plush, couples’ suites, to family-friendly apartments and holiday homes, a holiday on Hamilton Island really does offer something for everyone.

Visit an Underground Town
