Why you should choose New Zealand as a travel destination

Why you should choose New Zealand as a travel destination

There is no better place to visit than New Zealand. There are so many reasons to visit New Zealand, too many to list them all! Read just some of the reasons why New Zealand can and will be the trip of a lifetime!!!

New Zealand is a small country, actually tiny, and is made up of two remote islands (along with many smaller ones). New Zealand has  a population of just over four million people, it is one of the world’s greatest tourist destinations.

Read this to learn about some of the unique things about New Zealand that have made it famous – and why you should visit it too:

1) The incredible scenery. New Zealand has some of the most diverse environments on earth, from beaches and rainforests, to mountains, lakes, glaciers and even volcanoes! The great thing about New Zealand is you can often visit several of these different natural features on the same day.

2) The people. New Zealanders are naturally warm and friendly people who are very hospitable to tourists. Wherever you go you will receive a friendly smile and a warm welcome. What could be better than visiting a place of amazing beauty, and the people are as friendly as they come!

3) The climate. There are four distinct seasons in New Zealand, but these are not the extremes of hot and cold to be found in most other countries, like the USA, where you can have several feet of snow in one area, but travel to Arizona and need to blast the air conditioner.  They great thing about New Zealand is that any time of year is a pleasant time to explore New Zealand’s wonders.

4) Safety. Crime is low in New Zealand and as a tourist, it is fairly unlikely to encounter problems. Even better, there are hardly any lethal creatures amongst New Zealand’s wildlife so you can explore without concern for being bitten or eaten! Hard to believe, but yes, this is true!

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

5) The culture. Just as the Americas was inhabited by indigenous people long before  the arrival of Europeans, New Zealand was inhabited by the local native people, called the Maori before the arrival of the Europeans in the 1700s. Today, New Zealand  is a fascinating blend of cultures who mingle and thrive in a peaceful and  vibrant society.

These are just some of the reasons why your visit to New Zealand  will be absolutely unforgettable and leave you with memories to last a lifetime!  It’s a very special place – come and enjoy!

One Way vs. Round Trip Tickets

One Way Tickets or Round Trip Tickets – Which is Cheaper?

Have you ever found yourself in need of a one-way ticket? Have you ever been in an emergency and been not sure on how long you will stay? Or maybe you found a great deal from another airport? Whatever the reason, there are a few things you should know.

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

One-Way Tickets or Round-Trip – Best Airlines

Some people think that one-way tickets are always half the price of a round-trip or return ticket. This might be true sometimes, or sometimes it’s not. It depends on the kind of airline you fly, time of year and other factors.

Discount carriers (examples: Frontier or Spirit) may offer one-way tickets at half the price of round-trips fares, again this depends.

Legacy carriers (examples: American, United, British Airways): These airlines can be a bit more or even a lot more than half the price of round-trip fares.

Pay attention to details as sometimes one-way can be cheaper, but other times, not by much. Some times, one-way costs a little more.

Tip: Ask a Travel Team Agent for the best prices – and remember, airlines constantly change prices for both round-trip and one-way fares so no matter how you fly, you must compare fares – every time you shop.

How to choose a South Pacific island

How to choose a South Pacific island

In the South Pacific, you may think all Islands are the same. What you can’t tell from a map, or even most tourist brochures is that these palm-laden islands are as diverse as the region is vast. While the postcards might look similar, Fiji and Tahiti are not interchangeable or even much alike when it comes to landscapes and culture.

As you move east across the Pacific from the Solomon Islands to Easter Island, the flora and fauna becomes less diverse. Islands to the east like New Caledonia and Fiji have land snakes and fruit bats, French Polynesia and Easter Island don’t. Underwater you’ll find more soft corals in the plankton-rich waters to the west but better visibility in the greater reaches of open water to the east.

South Pacific islands are culturally and geographically divided into Polynesia (from the Greek meaning ‘many islands’) and Melanesia (meaning ‘black islands’). Polynesian islands include Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island while Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands are Melanesian. The colonial history of the islands has given this region a modern-day patchwork of English- and French-speaking island groups (plus Spanish in the far eastern Easter Island).

How to Choose Between Tahiti or Fiji

Here’s the low-down on the main regions and their highlights:

manava tahiti moorea beach bb

Tahiti & French Polynesia

Best for: resorts, diving, culture, surfing, hiking

Language: French

With over 115 islands spanning five archipelagos, French Polynesia has it all from the legendary, luxe Bora Bora and its over-the-water-bungalows to uncountable forgotten islands perfect for Crusoe wannabes looking for a basic beach bungalow. Wherever you go, you’ll be kissed with a touch of French style.

Dive with plentiful reef sharks and manta rays in the Tuamotu Atolls; ogle the world’s fastest hip shaking at a Tahitian dance performance during the July Heiva Festival; hike to waterfalls and mountain ridges on Tahiti, Moorea, the Marquesas Islands and more; or watch professional surfers brave cavernous tubes at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

go-away-fiji-fiji

Browse Tahiti Vacations or Fiji Vacations here

Fiji

Best for: culture, diving, families, backpackers, resorts

Language: English

Fiji receives nearly the same amount of visitors (about 630,000 annually) as the rest of the South Pacific combined but it still feels wild and exotic. Scents of Indian curries waft from city roti shops while in villages Melanesian families invite you in for a bit of ‘grog’ (kava, a slightly narcotic beverage). Underwater you’ll find seascapes of soft corals so dense they look like purple and white forests.

Viti Levu, the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands have the best beaches and most resorts while it’s easy to get off the beaten path on islands like the lush, dive havens of Taveuni and Vanua Levu or the near-roadless traditional escape of Kadavu.

royale-takitume-cook-islands-8-day

Raratonga & the Cook Islands

Best for: beaches, resorts, families, food, diving

Language: English

The Cook Islands mix Polynesian blue water and hospitality with New Zealand (who administer the islands) savoir faire. On the lush, main isle of Raratonga beach bum all day then experience an ‘Island Night’ Polynesian feast (pork cooked in an earthen oven, taro root and more) and a local dance performance.

Hop a plane to Aitutuaki atoll, with its low-lying coral islets curling around one of the world’s most fantastic lagoons. When not diving, snorkelling or swimming in blue water, check out the atoll’s ancient stone temples called marae.

Vanuatu

Best for: culture, volcanoes, backpackers, resorts, diving

Language: English & French

If you want rumbling volcanoes, kava bars, shipwrecks to dive on and wild jungles to trek but still want your roads paved and your cheese French, Vanuatu is the place for you.

The main Island of Efate is home to the endearingly dusty capitol of Port Vila but the real action lies on the outer islands. Tanna is dominated by fiery and climbable Mt Yasur. Espiritu Santo has upscale resorts and a tough trek to the massive Millennium Cave filled with waterfalls and bats. Dive and snorkel WWII wrecks to coral gardens.

samoa-travelteam

Samoa & American Samoa

Best for: beaches, culture, surfing, peace & quiet, hiking

Language: English

The Samoan Islands are divided into two countries – Samoa, which is independent, and American Samoa, which – you guessed it – is an American territory. Both however remain very traditionally Polynesian. Although ‘Upolu in Samoa has a few relatively upscale resorts, all the islands feel untouristy and much other accommodation is in the form of basic open beach huts called fale.

You’ll find some of the South Pacific’s best and most pristine beaches, lots of smiles, flower-filled villages and a pace of life that stands out as slow even in this region. There are few organized excursions but for independent types the opportunity for hiking, cultural connections, surfing and snorkeling are endless.

Valentine’s Day Around The World

Valentine’s Day Around The World

Do you know how Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world; or the true origin’s of this day? During the 3rd century in the Roman Empire, Emperor Claudius II banned traditional marriage in the military. He believed men fought better if they were not married. Saint Valentine was either a priest in Rome or a bishop in Terni, central Italy. He risked the Emperor’s wrath by standing up for traditional marriage, secretly marrying soldiers to their young brides. When Emperor Claudius demanded that Christians deny their consciences and worship pagan idols, Saint Valentine refused. Saint Valentine was arrested, dragged before the Prefect of Rome, and condemned him to die. So you see there is a deeper meaning to this day. Here is how it is celebrated around the world.

Britain

In Britain, St Valentine’s Day is the common celebration that has people expressing love for their beloved with gifts like flowers, cards, chocolates and other special items. The traditions of the celebrations of Valentine’s Day differs in different regions of the country. One popular tradition followed in some areas of England is the baking of valentine buns with caraway seeds, plums, or raisins. This connection with fertility and the similar date of celebration are probably the reasons why many writers link the festival of Lupercalia with Valentine’s Day.

Composing verses is another extremely well-known Valentine’s Day custom of Britain. About a month earlier to Valentine’s Day, leading tabloids and reputed magazines publish sonnets and verses to commemorate the occassion. The tradition owes its origin to the British poets who have penned some of the best love poems and the majority of the romantic verses associated with Saint Valentine.

Italy

In Italy, Valentine’s Day was once celebrated as a Spring Festival. It used to be held outdoors and young people would gather in brightly decorated gardens to listen to music and the reading of poetry. This custom has been out of practice for a long time. In modern day Italy, Valentine’s Day is mainly seen as a holiday imported from US, just like Halloween, Father’s Day or Mother’s Day. The day is celebrated to profess love to their sweethearts the American way with gifts like perfume, chocolates, flowers, cards or gifts. The day is seen here exclusively for lovers, and hence, family members and friends do not exchange gifts. Couples usually go out for dinners at pizzeria or ristorante which ends with lovers’ giving gifts to each other.

Denmark

In Denmark, February 14 is mainly a day for the young, a time for romance and exchanging of love tokens. Young people send a valentine card on this occasion. The Danish valentine card is famously known as a “lover’s card”. Valentine’s Day card shops all across the country are seen to be stacked up with colorful and musical lover’s cards containing lovely Valentine messages. Another Danish Valentine’s Day custom is to send pressed white flowers called Snowdrops to friends.

Japan

In Japan, Valentine’s Day is observed on February 14 but the celebration of love truly ends on March 14, known as the “White Day”. Women present chocolates or gifts to the men they love to express their feelings for them. Gift shops all over Japan pile their shelves with chocolate a month before Valentine’s Day. Most Japanese females also make the confection all by themselves.

Korea

In Korea, it is common to see gifting of chocolates and candies from females to males. Then on March 14, which is referred to as “White Day”, the favor is returned. Also, many young men confess their love for the first time to their sweethearts on this occasion.

And then there is April 14, also known as “Black Day”, which has been specially set aside for those young people who have no particular romantic partners. The curious name of the day probably comes from the fact that on this date, individuals who are not in any relationship get together and partake of Jajang noodles, which are black in color.

Germany

The German celebration of Valentine’s Day is nearly the same as elsewhere in the world. For Germans, this is a celebraton of love and a time to spend with their sweethearts. In Germany, it is customary for a young man to present his love with flowers on February 14.

Seasons in Australia

Spring: September – November (lovely)
Summer: December – February (hot)
Autumn: March – May (lovely)
Winter: June – August (cool, but not really cold)

Temperatures in Australia

As a starting point, its important to know that the size of Australia compared to the USA is only slightly smaller in land mass – so Australia is huge!  So there are large variances in temperatures across Australia on any day.  The further north you travel (closer to the equator) the hotter it gets, which is the opposite for the USA.

The coldest it gets in Australia’s most visited tourist destinations is around 32F (freezing) in places like Uluru or Canberra during winter nights in July/August.  There are not any snowbound cities in Australia.

The hottest (dry heat) is about 100F at Uluru in the peak of summer in December/January.  And with 100% humidity it can reach about 90F in Cairns and Darwin during those same months.

Australia Rainfall (Tropics)

Wet Season: November – May  (Most rainfall occurs in January, February & March.)

Dry Season: June – October

The “Tropics of Australia” is the region north of the “Tropic of Capricorn” (the top third of Australia) and includes cities like Cairns & Darwin.  Rainfall is an important consideration if you want to spend some of your vacation exploring the Outback at Kakadu National Park in Australia’s far north – the “wet season” is not the time to do it.  However if Scuba Diving the Great Barrier Reef is more up your alley, then it won’t matter if you travel in the wet season – either way you’re going to get wet and have fun!

The best time to visit Australia is either Spring (September – November) or Autumn (March – May), not too hot nor too cold.  You avoid the busy Summer Break (School Holidays) and the peak Christmas traffic (most expensive flight prices).  If traveling up north to the tropics and with no other influencing factors, go  in Spring, just before the wet season.

Kenya Odyssey Super Special

Kenya is often described as the African continent in microcosm. You will see some of the best parks in Africa from Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara, home of the “Big Five” and the Masai people.

Sometimes described as Africa in miniature, Kenya is a land of dynamic contrasts. This 8 day round trip from Nairobi takes in breathtaking scenery, well preserved traditions and Masai Mara National Park.

Mt Kenya provides a spectacular backdrop to 3 nights exploring the surrounding region. You’ll take a morning game drive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Home to a wide range of animals, the Conservancy is particularly known for its chimp and black rhino populations. Then drive to your lodge at the foot of Mt Kenya. This prime position offers a unique game watching experience, as the animals come to you – or at least, to a waterhole located just below the lodge’s terrace, offering a fantastic opportunity to photograph these majestic creatures.

Vast flocks of flamingos descend on Lake Nakuru, along with warthogs, baboons and other impressive mammals. More game drives await you after lunch at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge. Try and spot some of the park’s introduced black and white rhinos. Leopard sightings have also increased in recent years.

The vast plains of the Serengeti cross the border into Kenya, becoming Masai Mara. This game reserve is famous for its large population of big cats and the colourful culture of the Masai people. This is one of the best preserved parts of Kenya, where life has changed little in the past century. You’ll enjoy game drives, visit a traditional Masai village, and savour a definitive Kenyan experience, breakfast overlooking hippos in the river. Or opt for a balloon ride at extra cost, for incredible views over the famous ‘endless plains’.

Wonder of South Africa w/Airfare

Spend two weeks discovering all that makes South Africa one of the world’s most diverse and colourful destinations. Take in natural sights such as Blyde River Canyon, explore the historic lands of the Zulus and Swazis, follow the magnificent South African coastline, and immerse yourself in the beauty, wine, and culture of the Cape. On this tour, a maximum of 40 guests are escorted by a local professional tourist guide. All departures are guaranteed with a minimum of 2 guests. Transportation is in air-conditioned luxury vehicles and tours are only conducted in English.

This 17-day South Africa trip with airfare takes you from Johannesburg to Cape Town, exploring the best of the country in all its diversity.

Take a night in Johannesburg to shake off any jetlag, meet your fellow travellers, and receive a tour briefing before leaving for the lush Lowveld. You’ll follow the Panorama Route to catch the view over Blyde River Canyon from God’s Window. This is a region filled with interesting geographical features formed by the canyon’s waterways. Your journey through natural South Africa continues the following day in Kruger National Park, arguably the country’s most famous wildlife region. Keep an eye out for the ‘Big 5’ – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo – along with other animals on your morning game drive, before your guide explores more of the park with you later in the day.

Strike another great Southern African country off your list the following day as you explore Swaziland. This independent kingdom is the smallest country in the Southern Hemisphere, preserving Swazi culture and the region’s wildlife with equal enthusiasm. Then, from Swaziland to Zululand, return to South Africa and learn about the unique cultural balance that has shaped this region. Enjoy an open vehicle safari in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park on your own account if you wish. You may also opt for a cruise from St Lucia, a popular coastal destination among South Africans. The surrounding wetland is home to hippos, crocodiles, and over 360 bird species. Spend the night in the popular seaside city of Durban.

Head for the Southern Drakensberg Mountains, a region of South Africa blessed with immense waterfalls, serene lakes and soaring rocky peaks. The afternoon is yours to explore this magnificent region as you wish, hiking, horseback riding, or fishing, for example. At extra cost, you may take an excursion into the tiny kingdom of Lesotho. There’s also a rich human heritage in the Drakensbergs, with cave art by the San/Bushman people dating back at least 4000 years. No matter your interest, there’s plenty to explore.

Journey to the Eastern Cape, home to the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, and the glorious beaches that line the way to Port Elizabeth. You’ll eventually reach the Garden Route, one of the most beautiful coastal regions in the world…not to mention the world’s feather capital. After following this incredible coast for 50 miles or so you will reach Oudtshoorn, renowned for its ostrich farms, one of which you’ll visit for a first-hand glimpse at this thriving industry. This is also home to the Cango Caves, which you can walk or crawl through, depending on your appetite for adventure!

Arrive at last in Cape Town, The Mother City widely considered to be among the world’s most beautiful. The heartbeat of culture and history in the Western Cape, Cape Town invites you to explore its stories with a dinner theatre experience on your first night. Afterwards, explore the city as you will. You may take a full day Peninsula Tour, which takes you some of the more far flung sights such as Boulders Beach and the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Wine lovers may prefer to head into the Winelands to sample South Africa’s famous bold reds and sweet whites right at the source. There are also plenty of activities available in Cape Town proper, such as a trip to the top of Table Mountain, a visit to the former political prison of Robben Island, or the Walk to Freedom, an informative tour telling the stories of, and beyond Apartheid.

This morning after breakfast, you will leave for Mpumalanga, dropping several hundred feet into the lush subtropical region of the Lowveld. Your travels take you along the circular Panorama Route via Graskop, visiting the view sites of the Blyde River Canyon, one of the natural wonders of Africa. This canyon is the third largest in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the US and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. You will also get the chance to gasp at the glory of God’s Window, with a boundless view of mountains and fertile plains. God’s Window is undoubtedly the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve’s most spectacular viewpoint, with astonishing views over South Africa’s lowveld. At God’s Window, majestic cliffs plunge down 700m and, on a clear day, you’ll be able to see over the famous Kruger National Park towards the Lebombo Mountains. Last stop for the day before heading to Hazyview is at the Bourke’s Luck Potholes. This natural water feature marks the beginning of the Blyde River Canyon. Through countless eons the swirling whirlpools which occur as the Treur River plunges into the Blyde River caused waterborne sand and rock to grind huge, cylindrical potholes into the bedrock of the river. The Potholes were named after a gold digger, Tom Burke, who staked a claim nearby. Although his claim did not produce a single ounce of gold, he correctly predicted that large gold deposits would be found in the area.
