What to Know Before Buying Travel Insurance

What to Know Before Buying Travel Insurance

Sometime events happen that are out of our control, travel insurance allows you to have a great trip and peace of mind. Travel Insurance is one of those things you might not think you need, but having it is worth every penny. Here are some things to do before buying:

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

  1. Read up on the several types of coverage

The five primary types offered are vacation cancellation/interruption, medical, evacuation, baggage and flight insurance. Consider your trip, yourself and other timely factors when determining what kind of and how much coverage is right for you. Your travel team agent can help you determine which is best for your needs.

Cancellation insurance: This is the most common kind of coverage found in every comprehensive policy. This covers unforeseen reasons like sickness of you or your traveling partner, weather or carrier issues, and legal obligations (like jury duty). The exact coverage varies from provider to provider. If you are pregnant and have unforeseen complications, a note will be required from your doctor.

Medical insurance: The first thing you need to ask yourself is if you need a plan that covers a pre-existing condition. If so, look for those types of plans. Most plans cover 24-hour emergency assistance, ambulance costs, hospital services and emergency dental work.

Evacuation insurance: Within medical plans, you can also buy evacuation insurance, which allows for emergency medical evacuation to the nearest appropriate care facility if you are somewhere remote or in a place that cannot appropriately treat a condition.

Baggage insurance: This covers travelers in two instances: It will reimburse travelers for clothes, medication and other essential items if baggage is delayed in arriving at the destination. It also covers you if your possessions are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip.

Flight insurance: Both airlines and insurance companies offer this protection solely for difficulties with your flights. People often purchase flight insurance only for international trips because of the higher cost of fares. This can help travelers save on the fees incurred in the event of a delay or cancellation because of bad weather, mechanical breakdowns or labor strikes.

  1. Read the entire policy before purchasing

This is not a time you want any surprises. Most insurance is sold in packages, so it’s important to read the inclusions and each to pick the package best tailored for you. You may not need evacuation insurance in a destination like London or Shanghai because they are such huge cosmopolitan cities, but if you have many connecting flights to get to those destinations, you may want a package that includes baggage insurance. Ask your travel team agent for advice.

For many Americans with medical insurance, their policies cover care abroad. Before pulling out your credit card, see what coverage you already have.

  1. Compare prices online
euro money

It’s not advised to purchase from smaller, no-name vendors. Some sites ask for the destination, trip duration, travelers’ ages, country of residence and the price of the travel components of the trip before they can give you quotes. Your travel team agent can help find the best deal, call 1-800-788-0829 to speak to a travel team agent.

  1. Talk!

Ask around to see if friends or family members have had a good experience with a certain provider. It never hurts to check out other perspectives and recommendations as well. Look for people who have taken a similar type of trip — and of course, your travel team agent will be able to help you with this as well.

  1. Weigh the pros and cons of getting insurance through a tour provider

Some travel companies will offer discounts with packages booked, but that doesn’t mean that what is being provided is the right kind of insurance for you. Some  packagers might provide more coverage than you need or not enough – or you might need a combination of a few things, and it can be harder to customize that coverage this way. Your travel team agent can make sure you find the right plan for your needs.

  1. Purchase your coverage as soon as possible after booking a trip

This is a good way to get discounts and extra coverage. Prices often will go up the nearer you are to your trip, so the best way to lock in the lowest rates is to ask your travel team agent to immediately look into this after booking your trip.

  1. Immediately create paper copies and digital versions of your documentation

It’s wise to save versions of all your travel documents in a safe place online. This way they can be accessed and forwarded while away.

wonders of peru super special with airfare

This 9-day Peru vacation starts in Lima, one of South America’s oldest colonial cities. Then discover life before the Conquistadores, visiting the Sacred Valley, Cusco, and Machu Picchu.

Often unfairly dismissed as a mere entry and exit point for Peru, Lima offers much more to any visitor willing to explore its historic streets. You’ll visit Miraflores, a popular tourist area, plus the Historical Centre, Main Square, the Palaces of the government and Archbishop, and Huaca Huallamarca, a pyramid that even predates the Incas. You’ll also visit the Santo Domingo Convent, and tour the Archbishop’s Palace, which is filled with art works dating back as far as the 1500’s.

Fly to Cusco and transfer to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After some time to acclimatise to the altitude, take a full day to explore Chincheros and Ollantaytambo. In Chincheros, immerse yourself in local culture, admiring Inca ruins, Andean village houses, and the colourful local market. Visiting the citadel of Ollantaytambo, let your imagination take you back to the Inca’s only known victory against a Spanish siege.

Time to visit the centrepiece of your trip, majestic Machu Picchu. This Inca city lay abandoned and unseen by outsiders for centuries, until its rediscovery in the early 20th century. Today, it is one of the world’s ‘must-see’ attractions, but this has diminished none of its mystery or wonder. The scenic Vistadome Train takes you Aguas Calientes, where you’ll transfer to a shuttle bus to visit the main site. Your tour takes you through the ruins in detail, uncovering their original functions and stories – at least, the ones we know so far. There are still many questions surrounding Machu Picchu, and you’ll have plenty of time to contemplate them before returning to Cusco.

Take a day at leisure in Cusco, the former capital of the Inca world and one of South America’s great cultural destinations, before returning to Lima for your departing flight.

10 Australian Wildlife Animals You Need To See

Australian wildlife bucket list: 10 animals you need to see

Besides beautiful beaches and vibrant cities, Australia is also known worldwide for its unique and spectacular wildlife. But did you know that more than 80% of the plants, mammals and reptiles are unique to Australia, which means they can’t be found anywhere else in the world?

Here is a list of the top ten animals in Australia that you must see during your Australian trip:

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

  1. Whale Sharks

Experience the thrill of a lifetime by swimming with the massive whale sharks on Western Australia’s Coral Coast. The best time of the year to do this is between March and July at the Ningaloo Marine Park where you will be able to snorkel with the whale sharks. These breathtaking creatures are often as long as eighteen metres but you’ll be happy to know that they are completely harmless to humans.

  1. Great White Sharks

If you are looking for more teeth on your shark, visit Port Lincoln in South Australia to go cage diving with Great White Sharks. There, you will spend the day at the sea and find yourself face to face with the iconic beast of the sea. Did you know that the lifespan of a Great White Shark is estimated to be 70 years?

  1. Crocodiles

There are crocodiles all over Australia, especially in Darwin, but if you are looking for a more intimate encounter, visit the Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin to share fifteen minutes with a giant crocodile while being underwater in the “Cage of Death!’

  1. The Dingo

The Dingo is Australia’s largest Carnivorous mammal and can be found throughout Australia, except in Tasmania. The Dingo is Australia’s wild dog and the best places to see them is on Queensland’s Fraser Island, Western Australia’s Kimberley and across the deserts of the Northern Territory and South Australia.

  1. The Tasmanian Devil

Besides in wildlife parks, the famously elusive and erratic Tasmanian devil can only be found in the wild in Tasmania. Interestingly enough, early European settlers called the marsupial “The Devil” due to its spine chilling screeches, black colour, and reputed bad temper.

  1. Kangaroos

The Kangaroo is Australia’s most iconic animal to see, along with Koalas. Kangaroos and wallabies can easily be found in the wild in most rural parts of Australia. With more than fifty different native species of Kangaroos and wallabies in Australia, it’s worth it to visit a wildlife park to get to know them.

  1. Koalas

Koalas are just adorable and their fur is actually as soft as you would imagine. Most wildlife parks in Australia will allow you to pet them and some will even let you hold them. But if you would prefer to see this cute creature in it’s natural habitat then they can be spotted all the way along Australia’s temperate eastern coast.

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

  1. The Wombat

Native to Australia, wombats are stout and burrowing animals that can be difficult to spot in the wild because they have the ability to head underground by digging extensive burrow systems with their front teeth and powerful claws.

The best places to see wild wombats are at the Blue Mountains National Park in NSW, or the Wilsons Promontory in Victoria.

  1. The Platypus

The Platypus is part of the family of animal group that can only be found in Australia. The Platypus famously looks like it came straight out of a children’s book with a bill like a duck, a furry waterproof body, and webbed feet. They are difficult to see since they live in burrows they dig into the banks of rivers, but your best chances are by quiet rivers of the eastern coastal areas.

  1. Birds

The collection of bird that can be found in Australia is astonishing and unique. In fact about 400 of the 800 bird species listed cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Grab your camera and explore areas where you could encounter tiny honeyeaters, penguins, kookaburras or the large flightless emu.

Day 4 Cusco to the Sacred Valley

A full day excursion to the Chincheros and Pisac Indian Markets and the Ollantaytambo Fortress in the heart of the Sacred Valley. With an early start, you drive through the fertile countryside of the Urubamba Valley to the colonial village of Chincheros. This traditional Andean town is known as ‘the birthplace of the rainbow’, and it has the full complement of photogenic attractions: Inca ruins, Andean village houses, an elaborate colonial church built on Inca foundations, and of course the lively weekly market. Please note: The main market day is Sunday. Other days the market is open but much smaller in scale.

Then continue down the valley to visit colonial village of Pisac where the Indian Market is one of the town and areas, main features. Please note: The main market days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Other days the market is open but much smaller in scale. You then visit Pisac Ruins which lie atop a hill at the entrance to the valley. It features an irrigation system, an astronomical observatory, and a solar clock and calendar (Intiwatana). Continuing down the valley and ever so slightly lower in altitude you head to the impressive archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is a massive citadel located 50 kilometers from Machu Picchu. The citadel served as both a temple and a fortress and the only battle at which the Incas held off the Spanish. Day 5 Moray and Maras Salt Pools

Today you pass through unspoiled and picturesque Andean communities on our way to the Incan agricultural experimental center of Moray, famous for its sunken amphitheatre, made up of four circular terraces, which appear to fade away into the earth like an artificial crater. The site was apparently an Inca agricultural research station filled with fertile earth and watered by a complex irrigation system, designed for experimenting with crops at various altitudes.

Continue onto the impressive Maras salt pools formed by water emerging from a lake inside the mountain in the Urubamba Valley. An amazing view is offered of the evaporating ponds used for the extraction of salt. Learn about ancestral techniques, which are still used, in agricultural, irrigation and salt-recollection tasks, as well as in Andean festivals and rites.

Perched 8,200 feet above the valley, the ruins were hidden by mountains and semi-tropical jungles for 400 years until discovered by Hiram Bingham of Yale University in 1911. Archaeologists believe that the Inca ‘Virgins of the Sun’ took refuge from the Spanish Conquistadors here. With your guide you tour the ruins.

Lunch is at the Orient Express’ Sanctuary Lodge located just a few steps from the Inca citadel. Late afternoon you return by bus to Aguas Calientes to connect with your train back to the Sacred Valley.

Then, enjoy a drink at your beautiful hotel in the heart of the chic Recoleta neighborhood. Tonight, head to the Esquina Carlos Gardel Tango House, named after Argentina’s most famous tango maestro, where you’ll savor Argentine cuisine and wine before a stunning tango performance.

Then spend time engaging with locals at the one of the city’s open-air markets. Break into small groups with local market guides as you discover and taste over a dozen different types of exotic fruits from Brazil. This afternoon, you choose your activity! Perhaps you’ll choose a behind-the-scenes look at Carnival and meet the artists who are designing the floats, costumes and dances during their year-round preparations for Rio’s biggest event. Or, maybe you’d prefer to join a local guide for a tour of a favela; learn about the unique contrasts and paradoxes of Brazilian society as you stroll through the community center, a school, and a local home; relish some time for coffee, cake and discussion with residents. The evening is free for your own exploration.

Breakfast; Stay at Sheraton Rio

Day 11: Rio de Janeiro

Your day is at leisure to explore fabulous Rio de Janeiro on your own. Relax by the beach at your resort or take a shuttle to Copacabana. Or, perhaps you’ll take an optional tour and board a jeep for a ride through the Tijuca forest followed by a visit to historic Santa Teresa. Or maybe an optional cooking class is more to your liking — you’ll immerse yourself in local flavors as you join a local chef in a cooking class where you’ll learn how to cook like a true Carioca! This afternoon, witness the city of Rio that captivated the world during the 2016 Summer Olympics. Stop by the Maracanã football stadium, which hosted the 2014 World Cup finals, before continuing on to the famous Carnival parade route, the Sambadrome. Afterward, behold the renowned Metropolitan Cathedral whose architecture was inspired by a Mayan pyramid. Tonight, join your fellow travelers for a farewell feast in a typical Brazilian churrascaria. Indulge in wine and meats slow-roasted to perfection. To toast a wonderful trip, learn how to craft caipirinhas – Brazil’s famous cocktail made with sugar cane liquor and lime.

What To Do if You Lose Your Passport

What To Do if You Lose Your Passport

The first things we put on our packing list for any international journey is our Passport.  Before even starting your journey, make copies of your passport as well as any other important documents. Make sure you give a copy to a family member or friend, and keep an electronic copy, like on a thumbdrive, and email it to yourself, so you can access it while traveling.

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

Step 1

If you lose your passport while you are still in the United States, don’t panic. Report it to the Department of State by phone or mail. All you need to do is fill out two forms — an application and a lost/stolen passport statement — your travel team agent can help you with this or give your more details too.

Step 2

If your passport is lost or stolen while you’re overseas, find the country’s U.S. Embassy (check I case you need to schedule an appointment). Fill out the application form, provide proof of identity so you may be issued a temporary emergency passport. Other documents may be required, such as a police report for a stolen passport; check the embassy website online. Keep in mind that emergency passports have limited validity, and that not every country will accept them.

Step 3

No matter where you lost your passport, you will want to educate yourself by googling the Department of State’s recommendations to minimize your risk of identity theft.  No matter what, don’t panic – better yet, call a travel team agent at 1-800-788-0829 for more information, we will help you start to finish with no extra hassle for you.

The Best Days Of The Week To Plan Travel

The Best Days Of The Week To Plan Travel

       pets-dog-travel-planning-laptop-opmpter

It can actually make a difference, the days of the week you start to plan a trip. Some say days like Tuesday and Wednesday are the best to find the lowest airfare – but some say Saturday and Sundays are the best days to find the best deals, so how do you know which day is best?

Saturday & Sunday?

It might not always be the case but many airlines have figured out that people who browse for fares on the weekend are more likely to travel for pleasure rather than business. This group is harder to woo because they have the most time to browse to find the best rates, so airlines sometimes post lower fares to get their attention. The best thing to do is ask a travek team agent and let us find the lowest fares for you.

But Tuesday/Wednesday can also be a good day to buy

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are typically the least expensive for trips within the U.S. International flights can vary. You can find the best deals by speaking to a travel team agent, we have access to the latest deals and those that aren’t available wide spread sometimes, we always get you the lowest fare and at no additional cost you.

How far to book in advance: The general rule of thumb is about seven weeks for domestic flights. Try to book at least a few months in advance for international flights, call a travel team agent  when in doubt, we will find the lowest fares possible for any time frame.

The worst day to buy: Within 11 days of your flight.  One day before the flight is going to be the worst day to buy. Call your travel team agent and we will help you navigate this with no hassle.

The best fares for Thanksgiving: For Thanksgiving, 96 days (about 14 weeks or so) before the flight.

The bottom line & best tool: Do your homework or better yet – call a travel team agent at 1-800-788-0829; don’t book a portion of a trip before speaking to a Travel Team Agent

The best tool is a Travel Team Agent. Tailor Made Journeys for internet prices.

Health: Locate the best doctors, specialists, and hospitals in your destination so you know where to go if you need medical treatment. This is especially important if you have any chronic health conditions.

Home: Ask a trusted friend, neighbor or family member to regularly check on both the exterior and interior of your home. Make arrangements to have someone clear the driveway and walkways each time it snows. Clean out the fridge and unplug appliances.

Ready to plan your dream vacation?

Mail: Nothing says, “We’re not home!” like an overflowing mailbox. Put your newspaper on hold and temporarily forward your mail.

Medications: If you’re traveling by air, keep your medication with you at all times so that you don’t run into any problems with lost luggage and missing medication. Have a plan in place for easily obtaining prescription refills if you so need.

Money: Make sure your major credit cards and ATM card won’t expire while you’re away. It’s also a good idea to inform your bank and credit card companies of your travel plans to prevent your purchases from being declined.

Packing (light!): Most properties provide all the same amenities you would have at home, including a washer and dryer — so keep packing to a minimum! Pack light clothing for the day, long layers for evenings, and a few dressier items for going out at night. If you forget something, you can always go shopping!

Passports and Visas: International travelers: make sure your passport is up-to-date and has enough pages for the number of places you’re visiting. If necessary, get appropriate travel visas —some places only allow travelers to stay a certain number of days, so find out if you need a long-term visa. Your travel team agent can answer this for you.

Security: Ask your local police station if they do house checks for travelers — Set outdoor security lights,  install motion sensors to control them. Set a few lights on timers with each turning on and off at different times to make it appear there is someone home. If you have a security system, inform the security company you’ll be away for a while.

Tips For Travel in Aboriginal Australia

Top tips for responsible travel in Aboriginal Australia

You don’t need to brush up on all the complex politics of post-colonial Australia before you head Down Under; just learn to be sensitive and courteous and you will have a memorable experience of this ancient and spiritual country.

Going on tour

Tours that focus on Aboriginal culture is still low. Do some research and ask a travel team agent to find good tour operators. A tour provides support to Indigenous owned-and-run initiatives, with profits going back to local communities.

Respecting privacy

For visitors to Central Australia, being aware of privacy and its importance to Indigenous Australians is a basic ethical travel requirement. Understanding privacy demonstrates respect for Aboriginal culture. For example, permits are required to visit many communities.

When visiting tourist sites that are places of cultural significance, some areas may be closed or have restricted access, just remember to respect this, and ask if you are unsure.

Example of ignoring signs: climbing Uluru (Ayers Rock). For safety, environmental and important cultural reasons the local Aboriginal community do not condone climbing of the rock, but thousands of visitors do it each year. Would you climb the main altar of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, or splash around in the National 9/11 Memorial ?

The environment

Indigenous people have a unique relationship with the land and water of their country. There are many ways you can respect this spiritual relationship to country.

  • Never remove rocks or objects from Aboriginal lands or waters without permission
  • Drive with care to avoid hitting wildlife, car pooling helps minimize your impact on the environment.
  • Never kick ant beds, or stones, or carve initials into, trees.
  • Rock art sites are particularly fragile, don’t climb for a photo without asking
  • Consider giving back to local communities through making a donation to local projects designed to improve and preserve the natural environment.
  • The simple act of enquiring about whose traditional lands you are visiting, is a mark of respect

Top Ways to Save on New Zealand Travel

TOP WAYS TO SAVE ON NEW ZEALAND TRAVEL

New Zealand’s sweeping mountain vistas, pristine beaches, unique wildlife and fascinating Maori culture make it a dream destination for many travelers. But exploring the Land of the Long White Cloud doesn’t come cheap. An expensive long-haul flight will take the first chomp out of your budget — and once you arrive, you’ll find high prices for gas, food and excursions.

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

Read on to learn how to trim tour costs, find a cheaper flight and eat well for less.

Travel at the right time. New Zealand’s seasons are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere, so the busy summer travel season runs from December through February. Both international travelers and Kiwis swarm the country’s most popular sights this time of year, and prices rise accordingly for everything from airfare to accommodations.

Focus your trip. New Zealand may not look like a big country, but if you want to take in the major sights on both islands, a week or two just won’t cut it. If your time or budget is limited, concentrate on either the North Island or the South Island, not both. Staying focused will save you a mound of money on internal transportation; domestic flights or gas for long car trips can eat away at your vacation budget.

Ask a Travel Team Agent for the best rates. Call 1-800-788-0829 today to start speaking with an agent.

Keep an eye on exchange rates. Along with fuel prices, currency fluctuations can have a noticeable effect on the cost of your airfare. I took advantage of this myself on a recent trip; I made my booking at a time when the U.S. dollar was strengthening against the Kiwi dollar, which resulted in lower fares from Air New Zealand.

Money Management

Put it on plastic. Forget the old “cash is king” rule. The vast majority of hotels, restaurants, tour operators and shops in New Zealand accept credit cards. If you’ve got a card through a bank that doesn’t charge you for foreign transactions, you can pay for nearly your entire trip without shelling out for ATM withdrawal charges or currency exchange fees.

Skip the exchange counter. To get cash, use your ATM card to make withdrawals rather than changing your own currency at an exchange counter; by doing so, you’ll get the interbank exchange rate, which is usually 2 – 5 percent better than the rates you’ll find at the counter.

Don’t tip. Tipping is not customary in New Zealand, so you don’t need to leave anything extra for your waiter, tour guide or bellhop unless the service was truly exemplary. Even then, 5 – 10 percent is plenty.

Attractions and Activities

Pick your poison. You could easily blow hundreds of dollars a day on tours, excursions and entrance fees, particularly if your New Zealand bucket list includes pricey once-in-a-lifetime activities like bungy jumping or helicopter flightseeing.

Find some freebies. In between all of New Zealand’s $150 dolphin encounters and $300 flightseeing excursions are plenty of free attractions to enjoy. It costs nothing to hike in most national parks, lie on a North Island beach, wander along the Rotorua Lakefront or stroll through botanical gardens in Queenstown.

Common Travel Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

Common Travel Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

Travel Mistakes and Frustrations

It is common to make mistakes when traveling and exploring the unknown. Here are 24 of the most common travel mistakes.

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

  1. Having an over ambitious itinerary

Be flexible; don’t be afraid to change your plans due to weather or money.  Be aware of the time it takes to get from “A” to “B” (not by distance, but by travel method: car, bus, train, etc).  Factor additional time for possible delays as well as extra time to rest.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

  1. Over packing

Pack only what you need and know you’ll use.  Buy the rest at your destination. Once fully packed, review everything you have and try to reduce the load a little bit more.

  1. Blindly trusting the first directions you get from a local

Ask more than one person for directions to the same place.  If the person hesitates or looks up like searching for an answer, kindly accept their help and look for additional help at the next street.

  1. Relying totally on Guide Books

Guidebooks are made to inform your travels, not to define them.  Put the guidebook down and interact with other travelers and people at the destination.  Allow yourself to explore and use on your own initiative; there is a lot more to a place than what is in any guidebook.

Having no Money

  1. Forgetting the budget and running out of money

Instead… You should consider your budget as a as a way to experience the place more creatively and more authentically; not as a restriction.  Create a realistic budget you can stick to and allow some breathing room for unexpected expenses.  If traveling long term, schedule weekly transfers from your savings to your checking (like a paycheck), so you know exactly what you are allowed to spend.

  1. Not backing up pictures and losing them due to a stolen camera or virus

Backup pictures on a CD/DVD on a regular schedule or host them online. This mistake is very heartbreaking, so it’s best to avoid it.

  1. Booking connecting flights with a short transit time, thus, missing your flight

Give yourself at least a couple hours between flights to allow for any possible delay.

  1. Not double checking your documents and bookings for errors

Double-check your documents and reservations for everything from hotels, flights, trains, buses and more. Always corroborate the time and location, and check that your name is correctly spelled on you flight reservation.

  1. Not Buying Insurance

Spending those extra few dollars will give you the benefit of feeling more secure in case something happens (lost baggage, trip delay or cancelation, medical emergency).

  1. Not notifying the bank of future foreign transactions

Notify the bank beforehand of all the countries you will be visiting so they know it’s you who’s using the card.  Plus, many international banks have foreign branches and joint ventures that will forfeit their ATM fees.

  1. Not factoring the different time zones when booking your trip

Instead… Corroborate the different time zones between places “A” and “B”, how long does it take to get there, and how many time zones are you crossing.  Factor this in your reservations’ scheduling.  Also, consider the possible effects of jet-lag during your first days, or better yet, learn how to prevent jet-lag.

Passports

  1. Not making copies of important documents

Have a hard copy of your documents (passport, IDs, travel insurance policy, credit cards) with you, and a digital copy safe (if possible, as a password protected .pdf) on a “secret” email account, iIn case you lose your original documents.

  1. Making large currency exchanges before leaving home

Exchange just enough to cover you until you get to the first ATM or good-rate exchange kiosk at your destination.  Or, withdraw money from an ATM right when you get there.

  1. Arriving at the wrong airport

When traveling on big cities that have more than one airport, double-check your reservation to corroborate which is the correct airport and correct terminal.

  1. Sticking to the tourist trail

Dare to explore outside the commonly done and seen.  Create your own unique experiences; don’t just follow what others have done.  Go off the beaten path, often time the best experiences and the biggest opportunities are hidden there.

  1. Tempting pickpockets with flashy items

Use common sense and don’t expose your valuables.  In fact, if you don’t need them, don’t wear them.

  1. Being culturally insensitive

Try to understand the culture and the surrounding in which you are traveling.  Having an open mind will help you blend better, enjoy and absorb the culture in a more interactive way, and avoid insulting them unintentionally.

Empty pockets

  1. Having all your money in a single place

Don’t put all your “eggs” in the same basket.  Avoid carrying too much cash and store it in various “safe” places.

  1. Not knowing the hidden foreign charges in your credit card

Call your bank to make sure what the transaction fees for foreign purchases are.  Keep in mind, that when foreign companies charge you in dollars, they still could charge the “foreign transaction” fee.

  1. Not doing research

Avoid arriving to a destination a not knowing what to do by at least doing a small Google search.  Get information of possible things to do and interesting history of the place.  The more research you do in advance and the more you know; the more chances you have to enjoy the place.

  1. Drinking too much

Drink in moderation and find other ways to relieve the stress and have fun!  Drinking too much will not only sucks all your money, it will also put you at a higher risk of getting robbed or injured.

  1. Ignoring local’s advice

Pay attention to what locals say; put into consideration and evaluate their advice.  Who knows, maybe their advice will save you from getting robbed or help you save a couple dollars here and there.

Getting Angry

  1. Getting angry at the foreign country

Even if you had a lousy time and were not treated as expected, consider it as part of your experience and learn from it.  Sure, express your frustrations if you need to, but remember, you are a guest at that country.  Just because they don’t do things the way you’re used to, doesn’t mean that they are wrong.  Practice patience and tolerance.

  1. Having unrealistic expectations

If something goes not as planned, go with the flow.  Have a realistic expectation and don’t expect your trip to be perfect.   Better yet, don’t create an image of expectation and arrive with a fresh and open mind that will help you accept things as they come.
