7 Secrets to Cheap Destination Weddings

7 Secrets to Cheap Destination Weddings

Cheap destination weddings don’t have to look cheap.  Did you know that you can have a very lavish but affordable celebration for much less than what you would have spent on a traditional local marriage.

Try something memorable for your special day!  Keep reading to discover how!

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

Location, Location, Location

Location is a huge factor in price. By choosing destinations that not only offer affordable destination wedding packages, but are inexpensive to travel to, you will save a lot! The most inexpensive destination wedding locations are Mexico, Jamaica and Hawaii.

The industry is so big that many large resorts have designed a variety of cheap destination weddings and packages fit for all budgets. The close proximity to the continental U.S. also makes travel more affordable.

Trimmed down guest list

One big benefit of destination weddings is that you get to invite as many or as few people you want.  You don’t have to invite all your co-workers, cousins-twice-removed, or acquaintances you might feel obligated to during a traditional ceremony close to home. Who wants to pay $100 per person for 250 of your closest strangers to come to your wedding? This is YOUR day!

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

Combined Honeymoon

While you normally have to spend a few extra thousand dollars on your honeymoon, that isn’t so with a destination wedding – you are already in paradise, so no extra plane ticket, hotel stays, you are already there!

Take The Bahamas, for instance; destination weddings are executed to perfection, and you have over 700 islands to choose from.  Get married at 1 amazing island, and if you want to travel to another location, it is just a short distance to another for a dream honeymoon.

Minimal Décor

Planning cheap destination weddings is easy when the setting is so stunning that you don’t even need decorations! When you get married in your hometown, think of how much money is spent on flowers. But in paradise you won’t need expensive flowers to cover up your venue. Just enjoy the natural beauty of the ocean, mountains, or the exotic blooms of an outdoor garden – you will save a ton of money!

Timing, Timing, Timing

Pssss….. want to know another secret to planning cheap destination weddings?  Set your date as close to the off-peak season as possible. Do research to find out what their peak season is – and avoid it at all costYour travel team agent can do this for you – call 1-800-788-0829 to speak to a destination wedding specialist and we will help you!

Use Your Group As Leverage

Major resorts and airlines are all competing for your business because by booking just one ‘away wedding’ will bring them a big group of 15-75 people.  That is big money for them with little effort.  YOU HAVE THE LEVERAGE here….. Ask for group discounts and get as many perks as you can for bringing them all that business. Your travel team agent can help you with this too, of course, call 1-800-788-0829 and let us get you the best value for your buck.

Dubai & Maldives escape

This 11-day vacation gives you two nights to explore Dubai and seven nights to indulge and relax in an island resort in the Maldives.

This trip to the United Arab Emirates and Maldives begins in Dubai, a spectacle of futuristic architecture and traditional markets. Whether you want to marvel at architectural wonders, sample the best in international cuisine, or go on shopping sprees in luxurious malls, Dubai is the place to be. The city boasts the most astounding ultramodern architecture you’ll ever see. Visit the towering Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, and climb to the observation deck where you can view the city from a height of 555 metres. Shop the palatial malls to get a taste for the best products in the Middle East or head to the traditional souqs or bazaars to buy spices and local wares. Be sure not to miss out on Dubai’s vibrant nightlife. Hop between premium hotel bars, visit pulsing nightclubs and relax in sheesha lounges to get a taste of this paradise for night owls.

After sampling the futuristic cityscape of Dubai, fly to the Maldives and enjoy blissful serenity at Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa. A brief 15 minutes from Ibrahim Nassir International Airport, this adults-only all-inclusive resort boasts airy villas, white-sand beaches, and sparkling blue lagoon. Its 140 villas blend into the island’s gorgeous natural surroundings. Immerse yourself in absolute serenity in a tastefully-designed beachfront villa or in an overwater villa with direct access to the turquoise lagoon.

If you venture outside your room on your trip to the Maldives, you can lounge in the swimming pool with its swim-up bar, break a sweat at the fitness centre, or relax with a massage at the spa. Take advantage of the resort’s PADI Dive Centre to prepare for the incredible diving opportunities. Take a dhoni ride out to nearby Giraavaru Cave and dive to see schools of snapper along the underwater cave walls. Scuba dive down to the wreck of the Maldives Victory freighter, which sunk in 1981, and visit Kikki Reef, with its coral overhangs and 100-metre deep wall. Finish your days enjoying the variety of gourmet restaurants offering Thai, Italian, and Middle Eastern cuisine.

Whether you’re swimming the warm waters of the house reef or relaxing on the beach with a cocktail in hand, Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa will make your Maldives vacation unforgettable. Combined with a trip to Dubai, Centara Ras Fushi makes for the ideal honeymoon or romantic getaway.

5 Ways to Cut Travel Costs

5 Ways to Cut Travel Costs

Who doesn’t want to save on travel costs! We show you some examples of ways you can save money, you could save more or less depending on your route and other factors. Read on to see these great tips:

travel1-travelteam-250x190-e1438639181545

1    Save $50 (or more) on bag fees

Use the right bag: A checked-bag on most U.S. airlines will usually cost at least $25 each-way; use a carry-on and save $50.

Know your airline’s policy: Airlines in the U.S. and around the world have different policies. By knowing what airlines have extra fees or costs, you can save big by avoiding or preparing ahead of time.

For example, take advantage of Airlines with free-checked bags: Southwest offers FREE checked bags on domestic and international flights, and some big airlines may offer free checked bags on certain flights. Check the airline’s policy to be certain.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

laptop-computer-baby-planning-travel

2   Save $75 (or more) by comparing airfares

Comparing flights, doesn’t everyone do this? Remember, no airline has the best deals all the time, compare fares on different airlines. Remember, you can have a travel team agent search for your flight, we are able to find you the lowest rates. Tailor-Made Journeys at Internet Prices Travel Team 1-800-788-0829.

If you had compared fares, you maybe could have found a flight on American for just a dollar more, and American does not charge for carry-ons while Spirit charges for all bags. Compare and save.

3   Save nearly $80 (or more) flying cheaper days

On U.S. domestic flights, the cheapest days to fly are usually Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, and the cheapest for international flights typically tend to be midweek dates (Note: these are estimates and are subject to change). For domestic travel, the most expensive flights are usually Friday and Sunday.  For international travel, weekends and Sundays are higher.

Moral: You may save more or less depending on the route and other variables.

airport-travelteam

4    Save $120 (or more) by flying from cheaper airports

Save on airfare by comparing airports in the same area. The cheapest airfares may come from a different airport in the same area; for example, LAX serving greater Los Angeles and the smaller Burbank airport. You can find cheaper fares by sometimes using an alternate airport if you have that option.

5    Save $300 (or more) by adding a stop to the flight

There is value in convenience, and also savings if you are flexible. Flights that fly non-stop are typically going to be more than a flight that has a stop. Popular routes are non-stop and airlines know this, and we pay more. If you can endure the inconvenience of a longer travel day, you might save a lot of money.  Ask your travel team agent to find the right flight for you by calling 1-800-788-0829.

Always use a Travel Team Agent – we can find you  the lowest rates, best deals, and put together an amazing dream vacation for you! Call today 1-800-788-0829

Day 6: Barossa and Hahndorf Highlights

Travel through the city of Adelaide northwards to the world renowned Barossa wine region. Enjoy the change of scenery as you make your way into the vineyards of South Australia’s premium wine district. Your first stop is at the multi-award winning Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre where you will have the opportunity to sample their famous wines in a structured tasting, take a tour of the surrounding vines and cellar door and enjoy morning tea as you overlook the vineyards.

Leaving Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, travel to Mengler Hill Lookout for sweeping views over the valley and then onto Saltram Wine Estate at Angaston. Here you will learn about Saltram’s 150 year history and taste some of the wide selection of quality wines from the stunning cellar door. After a memorable cellar door experience, journey to the South Australian Company Store and Kitchen for a delicious lunch. The Company Kitchen draws on ingredients and traditions that are distinctly from the Barossa regional producers. You will enjoy a scrumptious 2 course lunch (including a tasting plate) along with wine tastings from two boutique Barossa wineries.

In the afternoon you will journey your way through the picturesque Adelaide Hills where you will have a short stop at the Herbig Family Tree at Springton. This hollow tree trunk provided a ‘home’ for Friedrich and Caroline Herbig and two of their 16 children until 1860. On arrival into Hahndorf (Adelaide’s oldest German settlement), you can choose between wine tastings at the boutique RockBare Cellar Door or free time to explore Hahndorf’s main street with many shops and galleries full of local arts, crafts and produce and pubs where you can sample some German Beers.

Day 7: Seal Bay Guided Beach Walk, Kangaroos and Koalas in the Wild

Today you will depart Adelaide by air. On arrival at Kingscote Airport you will be met by your guide and your island nature experience begins with an introduction to Kangaroo Island. Tour through several island habitats and see wildlife in its natural environment. Kangaroo Island is a haven for Australian wildlife, which exists in its natural habitat without the threat of introduced predators. Listen to the distinct sounds of the native birdlife as they chorus from the tall eucalyptus trees. Kangaroo Island is home to some 250 species of birds, many of which, through isolation from the mainland, have developed their own subspecies and are therefore unique to Kangaroo Island. As you travel the island keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies, reptiles and wildflowers.

At the spectacular Seal Bay Conservation Park, your guide will escort you on a memorable walk along the beach. This bay is home to a healthy Australian Sea-lion colony. Walk among the sea-lions as they bask on the beach or among the sand dunes after their extensive fishing expedition. With your guide you are able to stand at a safe distance to these wonderful endangered creatures and hear them sigh and watch them at play. This is a truly unforgettable experience, one that you will treasure forever.

Enter a exclusive heritage-listed natural bush property to enjoy a delicious gourmet style lunch with complimentary wine. Follow your lunch with a pleasant bushwalk looking out for koalas in the eucalyptus trees. Travel through the island’s interior keeping an eye out for koalas and echidnas. Explore the spectacular beaches of the north coast and enjoy a bushwalk. Listen for Australia’s rarest cockatoo, the Kangaroo Island glossy black cockatoo and watch out for the Tammar wallaby, with its small, fine features, in its natural habitat. Later in the afternoon, as the day draws to a close, see the kangaroos leave the safety of the bush to begin grazing on the open pastures. Your coach will return you to your accommodation for your overnight stay on Kangaroo Island.

Accommodation: Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge

Day 8: Flinders Chase National Park, Fur Seals, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch

This morning travel to the western section of the island and discover the remarkable Flinders Chase National Park, one of the oldest and most important national parks in South Australia. The park incorporates almost 20 per cent of the island and much of it is a Wilderness Protection Area, home to a variety of fauna and flora unique to Kangaroo Island. Enjoy the opportunity to walk through the park in search for kangaroos, wallabies and a variety of birdlife. See at close range some of the 10,000 healthy New Zealand fur seals in their colony at Cape du Couedic and discover the formation of the Remarkable Rocks. These large granite boulders balance dramatically on the cliff edge, which plunges 75 metres into the turbulent Southern Ocean below. At Admirals Arch see where the powerful forces of nature have cut through the headland to create this natural geological formation. A delicious gourmet style lunch with complimentary wine will be served in a secluded bush setting. During the day koalas can be observed peacefully existing in their treetop habitat. By special permit, enter the Kelly Hill Conservation Park to see kangaroos and other native wildlife emerge from the safety of the bushland to graze on the open plains.

Your tour concludes at Kingscote Airport for your return flight to Adelaide.

Staircase to the Moon in Broome

Between March and October each year, when natural conditions are just right, visitors to Australia’s North West region are witness to a natural spectacle – the Staircase to the Moon. Staircase to the Moon is a rare phenomenon which occurs when a full moon rises over the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay and create a beautiful optical illusion of a stairway reaching to the moon. The Staircase to the Moon happens two to three days a month between March and October, and Town Beach celebrates the occasion with markets selling local produce, handmade products, and a variety of international food, as well as local entertainers. Another popular spot to view the event is at The Mangrove Hotel Resort, which has live entertainment every Staircase night.

Vivid Sydney Festival

During May, Vivid Sydney is a 23-day festival of light, music, and ideas held in Sydney each year. Featuring a mesmerizing free public exhibition of outdoor lighting sculptures and installations and a cutting-edge contemporary music program, this festival is great for all ages. Watch the city become transformed into a nighttime wonderland through large-scale illuminations, laser lightshows, and 3D-mapped projections.

Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk

This coastal walk is the most famous, well-traversed track in Sydney. This scenic hiking trail passes between two of Australia’s best-known beaches, Bondi and Bronte, with spectacular beaches, parks, and lookout points along the way. Here you will find the South Pacific Ocean on one side, with waters rolling against a shoreline of coves and beaches extending south from Bondi to La Perouse, on to the entrance to Botany Bay.

THE CARIBBEAN
Obviously the first week of January is peak season for most Latin American and Caribbean destinations, so book early to lock in the best deals. After that January will remain high season through that same region, but plenty of bargains are out there if you look around.
If you are mainly looking to relax in the sun, you can’t beat the Caribbean in January.
The new trend is towards all-inclusive hotels. Specifically, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are where you’ll find most of them, although many even cheaper ones are on the Mexican coast in Cancun and just to its south. For most people, an all-inclusive resort will end up saving a lot of money.

BELIZE
IT IS HOT AND HUMID and it rains a lot in Belize. It is the perfect Caribbean escape for those who like it rough and palm-fringed around the edges, with tropical highlands, Mayan ruins and the most astoundingly beautiful beaches, just a handful of hippies and beach bums to share them with. January and February are the best months, only pleasantly hot and not too wet.
AUSTRALIA’S GOLD COAST
START THE NEW YEAR with several bangs: Sydney throws possibly the best New Year’s Day parties in the world (how like Australians not to waste the day in bed with hangovers). Then head on up the Gold Coast to Byron Bay or the Whitsundays, or the Great Barrier Reef, or pretty much anywhere along the east coast. January is the best month to go, December’s crowds have gone, and the weather’s hot but not too hot. Food, drink, beaches, private islands… They do everything big and bold and in style.

THAILAND
THAILAND IS HEAVENLY IN JANUARY. Yes, it’s peak season, but the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year parties are over; Bangkok is pleasant, and the islands on the south-western, Andaman Coast are just lovely: Koh Phi Phi, Phuket, Koh Lanta. Visit Over the east side, the islands of Koh Samui, Phangan and Tao are wetter – if you’re heading here, wait a couple of months until March; but still, those monsoon-like rains blow in, pour themselves out, then an hour later everyone’s back on the beach.

SOUTH AFRICA
SO, SO MANY REASONS TO GO, but briefly: amazing food and wine, beaches, hotels. Sensational scenery, from the Garden Route and Western Cape to the Little Karoo. Completely thrilling wildlife encounters on safari, staying at the most incredible lodges; or along the coastline, in knock-out villas. January is one of the best months for all those things.

Browse African Vacations here…

MEXICO
THE COAST OF MEXICO is filled with color, exoticism; warm and spicy and exuberant. Parties on the beach, yoga under the trees, a dip in dappled-light cenotes. Try out the haciendas and smart resorts on the Riviera Maya; for colonial Mérida. The weather on both Atlantic and Pacific coasts is wonderful in January: hot but not-too-hot, with barely any rain at all.

INDIA
INDIA is spectacular in January. It’s pleasantly warm, the holiday crowds have vanished and you can dance through its palaces as if on your own private Bollywood set. January also provides the perfect weather for an Arabian Nights-style safari in Jaisalmer, where you can traverse the desert on the back of a camel and sleep under the stars.

Christmas Traditions In The Southern Hemisphere

Christmas Traditions In The Southern Hemisphere

The heat of early summer in Australia impacts how  Australians as well as countries in Southern Hemisphere celebrate Christmas. Since the seasons are reversed to ours in the United States, some traditions are similar and some are unique. Read to discover how the holiday season is celebrated in the Southern Hemisphere.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas houses are decorated; greetings cards sent out; carols sung; Christmas trees installed in homes, schools and public places; and children delight in anticipating a visit from Santa Claus. On Christmas Day family and friends gather to exchange gifts and enjoy special Christmas food.
Many Australians spend Christmas out of doors, going to the beach for the day, or heading to camping grounds for a longer break over the Christmas holiday period. It has become traditional for international visitors who are in Sydney at Christmas time to go to Bondi Beach where up to 40,000 people visit on Christmas Day.

Christmas plants
There are many native Australian plants in flower over the Christmas season. When Europeans first arrived in Australia they were delighted that they could pick wildflowers resembling bells and bright green foliage covered in red or white flowers to use as Christmas decorations. This was a huge contrast to the bare trees and dormant gardens they had left behind in Europe. . A number of these have become known as ‘Christmas plants’ in various parts of the country, including Christmas bells, Christmas bush and the Christmas orchid.

Food
Christmas in Australia comes at the beginning of summer and many people no longer serve a traditional hot roast dinner. Cold turkey and ham, seafood and salads are often served instead. It has even become acceptable to serve the traditional Christmas plum pudding with cold custard, ice cream or cream. Pavlova, a meringue base topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit, and various versions of the festive ice-cream pudding have also become popular Christmas desserts.
Major sporting events

The Christmas break is an opportunity for sports fans to enjoy two major sporting events. The 26 December is the opening day of the ‘Boxing Day Test’ between the Australian Cricket Team and an international touring side at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This has been well attended since the first match in 1950, and watched by many others on television. In Sydney one of the world’s most prestigious ocean races, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, starts on Boxing Day from Sydney Harbour.

Indigenous Australians
Indigenous Dreamtime stories obviously do not include Christmas. However, this date in the calendar coincides with other seasonal changes. In Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Yolngu Aboriginal people will observe the last season of their six-season cycle. Gudjewg, the wet season, begins in late December.

Other celebrations
Although Christmas is a widely recognized holiday worldwide, there are other major festivals which occur around the same time: the Jewish people commemorate Hanukkah, Muslims observe Ramadan, African Americans celebrate Kwanzaa, and the festival of Ta Chiu is held in Hong Kong.

Hanukkah
In the Jewish religious calendar, the festival Hanukkah (the Hebrew word for ‘dedication’) commences on the 25th of Kislev, and continues for eight days. It is also referred to as the ‘Festival of Lights’ and celebrates a victory by a small Jewish army over the Greeks in the second century BC.
During Hanukkah, children play with a dreidel (‘spinning top’), and also receive gifts of ‘Hanukkah money’. Special feasts for the children and competitions for youths are arranged. In countries where Christmas is celebrated, Hanukkah, particularly among Reform Jews, has assumed a similar form.

Ramadan
The Islamic month of Ramadan sees Australia’s significant population of Muslims observe traditional Ramadan practices including fasting daily from dawn to sunset. Ramadan is important for Muslims because it is believed to be the month in which the first verses of the Koran (the divine scripture) were revealed by Allah (God) to the prophet Muhammad. The Islamic calendar is only 354 days long, so Ramadan moves forward in relation to the Gregorian (Western) calendar.

Ta Chiu
Ta Chiu is a Taoist festival of peace and renewal that takes place on 27 December in Hong Kong. The participants summon all of their gods and ghosts so that the gods’ collective power will renew their lives. At the end of the festival, priests read aloud the names of every person who lives in the area. Then they attach the list of names to a paper horse and set it aflame, letting the names rise to heaven.

Tips To Ease The Stress Of Holiday Travel

Tips To Ease The Stress Of Holiday Travel

Arrive Early

How many of us have seen, or been one of the people scrambling at the airport? You don’t want to standing at the parking lot complaining about waiting for the shuttle because your flight is leaving in less than an hour. Arrive 3 hours early.

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days from $3,899

22 Day Australia & New Zealand from $5,399

Check in online

Checking in online will save you time at the airport. You can print out your boarding pass or upload it onto your phone and bypass the long lines at check-in. If you travel carryon only, you can go directly to security. If you do have luggage, many airlines now have a luggage drop-off desk for those travelers savvy enough to have already checked it.

Skip the security lane

There are many premium credit cards that allow you to use the fast lane. The regular holiday travelers will be standing in the long security lines filled with people. If you have the right travel credit card for your airport, you may be able to bypass the pubic line and join the frequent fliers. Check with your credit card company to see which premium card gives you travel perks, or ask a Travel Team Agent for advice.

You can also apply for Global Entry which grants access to the express   security lane for frequent fliers.

Be prepared for security

Going through security is the biggest hassle of airport travel. Keep a tote bag handy before going through security with your computer and liquids already separated. That way you won’t have to rummage through your bags looking for things. All liquids are less than 100ml and already separated in a plastic bag.

Wear slip on shoes for quick security checks and just take them and put them in the bin; It’s just easier that way.

Use Tote bags for security lines. Once the bags go thru, put everything into your suitcase and conveniently roll it away.

Enjoying the tranquility of the lounge

This is your holiday and time to invest a bit of cash to make your time at the airport enjoyable. Lounges aren’t just for airline membership status members anymore. Anyone can pay a fee to stay in a lounge. Look for lounges that are not associated with an airline. Lounge passes cost anywhere from $25-$40 and are worth it. Often times there’s even a shower to freshen up between flights.

Create a Care Package for the flight

Have everything you need at your fingertips. Before boarding the plane, fill a small tote filled with anything you may need during the flight.

Pay a extra for a Premium Seat

As a frequent flier I can attest that premium seats make all the difference. While it’s difficult for people who don’t have airline status (meaning you fly a lot) to get an upgrade, many flights offer premium economy seats that make your flight just a little more comfortable. The premium economy seats are located near the front of the plane, there’s extra legroom, and seats are usually wider. That extra space makes all the difference during the flight and being near the front of the plane lets you be one of the first off the plane, so you can beat the lines to immigration.

Download your own Entertainment

Many airlines are now charging for entertainment and often times if they do offer inflight entertainment, it doesn’t work of the selection is awful. We never rely on others for entertainment; we download our favourite TV show or a few movies on our iPhone and have hours on stress free entertainment.

Stay over at the Airport Hotel

And finally, if you want to start your holidays a bit early, book a night at the airport hotel. Many hotels offer parking packages where you can book a night before your flight and leave your car for up to two weeks in their parking lot. You can then catch their free shuttle to the airport in the morning. It takes all the stress out of holiday travel and gives you an extra bonus night for your vacation. When we travel for short periods, we always use an airport hotel. Many times, the nights’ stay is the same as booking a parking space for a couple of weeks.

Amazon River Cruise Tips & Why You Need to Take an Amazon River Cruise

Amazon River Cruise Tips & Why You Need to Take an Amazon River Cruise

Cruising on the Amazon River is exotic, exciting and one of those experiences you need to do at least once in your lifetime.

If you have always wanted to see where fish swim through the upper branches of trees, where rasping frogs perch, and where long-tailed monkeys occasionally swing by to play with your hair — you should add an Amazon River cruise to your bucket list.

Don’t forget to check out our website

The sheer scale of this gigantic “ocean-river,” running through the heart of the Brazilian rainforest from French Guiana to Peru, will simply blow you away.. Make a cruise along this magical river a priority, as it’s one of the world’s greatest trips.

Best Time for Amazon River Cruises

There are pros and cons to cruising the Amazon both in the “wet” (or “flood”) season (December to April) and the “dry” season (May to November).

Bear in mind even the dry season is not really dry, as the rain forest gets rain at any time of year. But rainfall and water levels will be lower, and more jungle paths will be accessible then. So if you like to get up-close and personal with sloths and other jungle inhabitants, the dry season is the best time to do it; On the other hand, it will be hotter — by an average 12 degrees — than it is in the wet season, so expect temperatures in the mid- to high-90s.

If you prefer floating, the wet season is the better option for you, as water levels are, on average, 21 to 23 feet higher, so it’s easier to explore some of the Amazon’s smaller tributaries. You’ll also see a richer variety of wildlife.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

Amazon River Cruise Tips

-Prepare for rain. The Amazon Basin is gloriously fecund and green because it gets so much rain; average annual rainfall is a whopping 12 feet. That means you can expect at least some rain on about 200 of the 365 days in a year, at a rough 60:40 ratio between the wet and dry seasons. So pack a sturdy umbrella and a light, hooded rain jacket (if you can bear to wear one in all that humidity).

-Take non-slip walking shoes. A foldable walking stick for forays ashore is also a good idea.

-Pack plenty of insect repellent. You’ll need it, along with sunscreen and a face-shading hat. And though you’ll need light cotton clothing to combat the heat, cover up as much as possible in long sleeved shirts, trousers (rather than shorts) and socks long enough to tuck your pant cuffs into.

-Don’t forget your binoculars. Some ships will supply them, but check before you go.

-Take your camera lens cap off. Do it as soon as you go outside to help the lens adapt to the humidity, or you’ll end up with some blurry photos.

-Always carry bottled water. The hot, humid climate can leave you dehydrated if you’re not careful.

What to order at breakfast

Hmmm… Pancakes may sound appealing, but you’ll likely be craving a nap afterward. Instead, by including sources of protein and fiber at each meal helps keep you full, provides the building blocks for muscle and supplies steady energy for the day.

In-room dining

For protein, order Greek yogurt, smoked salmon, low-fat or skim milk, or eggs (frittatas and omelets are the perfect vehicles for veggies). Go for the steel-cut oatmeal and multi-grain toast, instead of the sugary, fat-laden muffins and pastries.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

What to order for lunch

Protein-first, especially if you want to avoid the mid-afternoon slump and cravings. Opt for a chicken breast or turkey burger (sans bun or fries), salad with a lean protein, or seafood. Pile on the vegetables again.

What to order for a snack

This is where the honor bar can come in handy. Small packs of nuts, trail mix or protein bars are good snacks to have in case you get hungry. Make sure you stockpile a few apples from the lobby fruit basket, and you’ll always have one handy.

What to order for dinner

Keep portion sizes small so you don’t feel stuffed. Overeating can disrupt your sleep, which is the last thing you want on vacation or in the middle of a business trip.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

What to order late at night

You’re probably not craving a salad at 2 a.m. The first rule is to avoid late-night dining, especially if you had dinner. If you’re going to indulge in something sweet, think portion control and look for sorbet, fresh berries or anything with fruit. Pair it with a herbal tea, such as chamomile, and you’ll be asleep before you know it, and will wake up refreshed.

Belfast, Northern Ireland

With a growing array of open-air bars, arts venues, and restaurants, Belfast is quickly becoming an attractive destination for travelers. Stay at the design-forward Bullitt Hotel (inspired by the Steve McQueen film), which opened in October with casual, well-appointed rooms and complimentary grab-and-go breakfast granola. Check out arts organization Seedhead, which runs street-art tours and hosts pop-up cabarets around the city. The Michelin-starred OX and EIPIC lead the fine-dining pack, but also visit Permit Room, with its internationally inspired breakfast and locally roasted coffee. Noteworthy new nightlife spots include the Muddlers Club, a stylish restaurant and cocktail bar in the trendy Cathedral Quarter, and Vandal, a graffiti-adorned pizza place that turns into a late-night club, on the top floor of a 17th-century pub.

Belgrade, Serbia

Since the end of the Yugoslav wars, Belgrade has attracted steady investment—its graffiti-covered neighborhoods are now full of restaurants and bars. You’ll find hearty platters of ćevapi—smoky sausages without casing—and stuffed somborka peppers at Sokače, paprika-laden kebabs at Tri Šešira, and pan-Latin tapas at Toro. But the biggest draw is the growing craft-beer scene (the city has 37 breweries). Don’t miss the Kabinet Supernova IPA at Prohibicija in the bar-filled Savamala district, as well as Kas’s full-bodied pale ales and Salto’s IPA at Bajloni, set in a 100-year-old brewery space in Cetinjska.

Caribbean

As of late 2016 there are around 350 all-inclusive resorts spread around the Caribbean, with more being constructed every year. More than 100 of those are in the Dominican Republic, with nearly 70 others in Jamaica. The Cancun/Playa del Carmen/Cozumel area has more than 100, and the rest are spread among other islands. When researching Caribbean vacations, you’ll find the cheapest all-inclusive deals are clearly on the islands with the most resorts. The Dominican Republic dominates cheap all-inclusive vacation packages even more than it had in previous years. The message is clear in that if you want a luxury all-inclusive at the best value then head to the DR. But cheaper flights into Cancun might make that the better option for some. In all of the Caribbean “high season” runs from December through early April, and the “peak season” is the last week of December and the first week of January. In May and November you might find “shoulder season” rates in some places, and generally June through October is the “low season.” Plus,  if you are planning a destination wedding, honeymoon or tropical getaway, many resorts offer specials, and your Travel Team agent can design a tailor-made custom dream vacation package to suit your needs, and keep your pocketbook full.

Cambodia has some of Southeast Asia’s most stunning islands, but getting to them has always been arduous (a flight to Phnom Penh, a four-hour drive, then a choppy ferry ride). Beyond its iconic mountain backdrop and cinematic beaches, Cape Town has a compelling art and design scene, and it’s only going to get better as a grand museum opens in 2017. The MOCAA—heralded as South Africa’s answer to the MoMA or the Tate Modern—will take over a soaring concrete building once used for grain storage. The surrounding Cape Winelands—Stellenbosch, Constantia, and Franschhoek, among others—keep Cape Town’s residents well hydrated, while acclaimed restaurants are everywhere and will keep you well fed. Why You Should Consider a River Cruise

Why You Should Consider a River Cruise

If you have ever wondered why choosing a river cruise is such as great idea, here are some key points to consider when choosing a river cruise….

Browse River Cruises here…

The scenery

For many, the beautiful non-stop scenery along the riverbanks is their top reason for going. With land never far away, there is always something to see, be it rolling vineyards, historic cities or jungle. Calling at a new port every day means the scenery is constantly changing.

Small ships

Even the new larger river vessels are still much smaller than most ocean ships, making river cruising ideal for anyone who prefers a more intimate experience. Passenger numbers are in the low hundreds (sometimes even less), rather than the thousands.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

Calm waters

Sea sickness is a concern for some, but most waterways are extremely smooth and make for a very tranquil ride. The width of the rivers, the lack of waves, the flat bottomed design of the vessels and the relatively slow pace of the ship mean you barely feel you’re moving.

More time in port

On most cruises, you’ll visit one or more ports a day, and cover several countries in one trip, while only having to unpack once. Plus, with fewer passengers, getting off the boat is speedy, so no long queues holding up your exploring. Some cruises also stay overnight and offer evening excursions, giving you the chance to experience a city in a whole new way.

Contact a Travel Team Agent for more information or to plan your trip at 1-800-788-0829

Far-flung destinations

While Europe continues to draw the biggest crowds, there are plenty of other options including the Amazon in Brazil and Peru, the Yangtze in China, the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, the Mississippi in the US and the Irrawaddy in Myanmar (Burma).

Added extras

The majority of river cruises pack in plenty, including drinks, tips, excursions and transfers. The passenger-to-staff ratios also mean service is excellent and very personal.

Toothpaste

Toothbrush, that is an easy one to remember, but without toothpaste, you won’t get far so don’t forget to include it in your toiletries bag. While you’re at it, grab the dental floss too.

Whether you’re travelling somewhere exotic or just heading to the next province over, snacks are always a good thing to have handy. You can’t always just raid the fridge when your stomach growls at 2 a.m. Bring Nuts, granola bars and other healthy, non-perishable items that won’t go to waste.

Something warm

You might think “No need for a sweater! I’m going to a warm place in June — it’ll be scorching! Tank tops and flip flops.” Think again — even warm climates can get chilly at night. Don’t be the kind of person who has to consider wearing a hotel blanket to dinner.

Underwear

Underwear…. People often don’t even realize they’ve forgotten it until it’s too late. Don’t be that person who has to rush to the nearest department store — make sure your best underthings are the first thing you put in your suitcase.

Laundry essentials

A laundry bag is an item that is often underestimated. How are you supposed to separate your dirty underwear from your clean underwear? A stain remover pen comes in handy too. You’ll thank us later.

Traveling to Australia: Things to Know Before You Go

Traveling to Australia: Things to Know Before You Go

People often have many questions about what to do before they travel. Different destinations require different things to do before you travel, to bring and to know. Read on about traveling to Australia and things to know before you go.

Do you need a visa before traveling to Australia?

If you’re going to Australia as a tourist, you will need a visa. The only exception is if you’re a citizen of New Zealand. Citizens of the US and Canada, as well as Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea, can apply for an ETA online here. It costs around  20 AUD, which is about US$18.50. (Rates change daily so make sure to check exchange rate)

When should you travel to Australia?

The time of year you choose for your trip depends heavily on what part of the country you’re traveling to. Remember that Australia is in the southern hemisphere, so their seasons are opposite of those in the northern hemisphere.

The summer months of December, January and February are a popular time to travel to the southern part of the country, like Sydney and Melbourne, due to the warm weather. However, this is also high season, so it will be more crowded and more expensive. Consider going in October, November, March or April to avoid some of the crowds.

Up north in the tropics, summer means very hot and humid. This is the wet season and can be an uncomfortable time to visit. If you’re planning a trip to the northern region of Queensland, consider going in the winter months of June, July or August. Winter is also a good time to visit the hot desert regions, such as Uluru.

What are you prohibited from bringing into Australia?

Australia is pretty strict about what they let you bring into the country. Food, including fruits and vegetables, meat and eggs, is not permitted. You are also prohibited from bringing in plants, seeds, skins and feathers. Laws also prevent you from bringing in drugs, weapons, fire arms and protected wildlife.

Certain medications for personal use are subject to controls. It’s best to have a letter from your doctor stating what medicines you are taking and what your medical conditions are.

Do you need vaccines before traveling to Australia?

You don’t need any vaccines before traveling to Australia. However, if you have come from or have visited a yellow fever infected country within six days of your arrival in Australia, you will need to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination.

How to Travel Like a Pro

How to Travel Like a Pro

Do you love to travel, or do you dread it? For many people, travel is fun, except for the packing part. What to take, what to leave, how will I know if I have everything I’ll need? There’s a fine line between packing too much and not packing enough. Here are useful tips to have you traveling like a pro.

Use a packing list. It is helpful to use a spreadsheet to keep track of what you need to pack, and can’t forget, and you can strike off things I never use.

Pack as light as possible.  Ask yourself ‘”Do I really need this? If I need it, am I willing to cart it around? Can I find a suitable alternative at my destination?” Most items can easily be found at your destination, and few things are really a necessity in the first place.

Trim your wardrobe Pack a simple collection of outfits — only 2 to 3 days worth, choosing fabrics that are quick dry, wrinkle resistant, and that coordinate in colors so you can mix and match. Pack black, white and then either red or cobalt blue for a pop of color. Many places have laundry facilities available (especially if you’re staying with family or friends,) and sink washing in a hotel is a snap. Use accessories to dress up your simple wardrobe for maximum impact. Limit the number of shoes you have to carry as well — they’re bulky and take up a lot of room in your bag. Make sure at least one pair is super comfy for those long travel days.

Tuck a reusable tote bag that folds up into a small package into your suitcase. These are useful for souvenir shopping, for taking necessities down to the pool, for laundry, and many more uses. They come in very handy!

Corral your in-flight (or in-car) necessities. Pack small must-haves in a resealable gallon-size bag or small tote that you can keep handy when your suitcase is sealed up. It is useful for things like your iPhone and earbuds, iPad Mini, glasses, some baby wipes, a snack and a refillable water bottle. Add in your wallet and any must-have medications as well.

Set your luggage apart. Lots of people have plain black suitcases, so bling yours out a little so you recognize it at a glance. Colored duct tape (arranged in your initial perhaps) or a few brightly colored zip ties are more durable than ribbons or fancy luggage tags. Best bet: get a suitcase in an unusual color.
