Begin your trip in Christchurch, known as the “Garden City”, located on the east coast of the South Island. Christchurch – just like the rest of New Zealand – is a city of contrasts. It is a place where its residents continue to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle amidst a natural environment world-renowned for its beauty. A growing cosmopolitan ambience also adds a touch of excitement without overt flashiness. Everywhere there is an understated elegance that speaks of times gone by and promises a future where anything is possible.

Then to Queenstown, which is known as the Adventure Capital of the World. A reputation earned through the actions of a number of locally residing thrill seekers who have developed several unbelievable, adrenaline stirring, sanity-reducing adventures in a wildly exciting environment. Queenstown has, over the years, quietly expanded into all sorts of attractions, including new wineries, art galleries, and challenging golf courses.

Sometimes called the ‘Sound of Silence’ Doubtful Sound is the deepest and second longest of the South Island’s fiords. It is a powerful place – serene, mysterious and untouched by the modern world. Doubtful Sound has some splendid waterfalls and – keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and penguins.

Franz Josef is a small town in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. The town is named after the Franz Josef Glacier – itself named by Julius von Haast in honour of the Emperor of Austria Franz Josef I of Austria. The glacier’s terminal face is 5km from the town and its accessibility makes it a major tourist attraction and the reason many people visit Franz Josef. The town has a population of about 320 people and is 20 minutes walk from the Westland National Park.

australia-sydney5-travelteam (2)

Australia is travel heaven with unique wildlife, gorgeous white sandy beaches, such a varied landscape and more! The long flight can appear overwhelming, but it so worth it and can be made more enjoyable if you follow some handy tips. Read on to discover what its really like to fly to Australia from the US.

Booking with a Travel Team Agent means less stress!

Travel team agents recommend taking a direct flight to Australia. Direct flights from Australia usually depart from a main hub, or central airport in cities like Dallas, San Francisco or Los Angeles. Your travel team agent can book your domestic flights as well as your international flights all at the lowest rates – with no extra cost to you! Your bags will be checked all the way thru.

Contact a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 today for more information!

Handy tip: You will cross the international date line during your flight to Australia, which means you lose 1 day. When booking your flights both your domestic and international flights should be booked at the same time. Your travel team agent will do this for you. Contact a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 today for more information!

During Your Flight

airplane3-travelteam

After your travel team agent has booked your flight, get ready to board your plane on the way to Australia for the next 12 – 17 hours. Your travel team agent will send you information on how to purchase advanced seats, for instance if you want to sit with a friend or in an exit row for more leg room, it may be worth it to spend a little more to select your seat ahead of time. Contact a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 today for more information!

Most airlines offer great in-flight entertainment with movies, games, music and more. You might also want to bring a laptop or kindle if you want to read something you bring, watch your own movie, use the wi-fi, or maybe just relax during the flight!

Handy  tip:

Bring your toothbrush and a change of clothes on the flight to help you feel refreshed. During your flight, maybe relax with a movie or show. About 3 hours later, we recommend that you get up and out of your seat to stretch, maybe walk a bit up and down the rows of the plane. Some planes may even have stairs, so make use of these and walk up and down them a few times. You can ask the flight attendants for a pillow, sleep mask, or blanket if you need these. Rest up so you can be ready to start your Aussie adventure when you arrive.

Arriving in Australia

world_traveler_passport

As you exit the plane, take in the sights, you are in Australia! You will have to go thru customs where you wait in line with everyone else, show your passport, get your bags and away you go to begin your adventure. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your travel date!

Now it is time to go to your hotel. Ask your travel team agent if you have booked transfers which will wait and take you to your hotel. Usually arriving in Australia from the US is fairly early in the morning. Contact a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 today for more information!

Handy tip: If your room is not yet ready, ask your hotel to store your bags or you while you explore. It is better if you do not take a nap, you will want to stay awake during your first day in Australia to adjust for jet lag.

Which River Should You Take a River Cruise On

Which River Should You Take a River Cruise On

River Cruises offer a great way to experience the sights and culture of a country, while allowing you to relax and allow someone else to navigate! With so many options and different Rivers to choose from, how do you know what river is right for you? Here are some tips and facts about The different Rivers you can take your next River Cruise on….

Rhine/Moselle/Main

Big Savings scenic river cruises rhine river

The Rhine has more castles than any other river, and t combines centuries of history, culture with spectacular scenery and some of the oldest and most historic cities in Germany. The lesser-known Moselle river, runs through northeast France and Luxembourg, joins the Rhine at Koblenz. The Main river flows into the Rhine from eastern Germany; cruise along this, and you’ll end up in the Main–Danube Canal, which enables vessels to sail into the iconic “Blue Danube,” the gateway to Hungary and beyond.

Typical Itinerary:

The Rhine winds its way through six countries — Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands – it is 776-miles long which makes The Rhine number one river for cruise vacations and also a great starting point for first-timers.

Rhine cruises typically lasts one-week between Amsterdam and Basel, or vice versa, where you can take in the landscape of steep vineyard slopes, fairy-tale castles and medieval towns.

Music is traditionally played on the sun deck, often accompanied by complimentary cocktails, when ships pass the legendary Lorelei rock, a 433-foot slate cliff, where a beautiful siren was said to lure passing sailors to their doom.

Find your Rhine Cruise here…. Or Contact a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 today!

Things to Do:

Why not take two weeks to explore from Amsterdam to Basel? That way you get to see many more fascinating towns and cities. In spring, you can take mini-cruises from Amsterdam to see the tulip fields.

Danube

budapest-parliament danube river gate 1

The Danube is an enchanting river. A Danube cruise is also a history lesson about the days when Vienna ruled an empire and, more recently, an Iron Curtain divided Europe.

Typical Itinerary:

The Danube flows from the Black Forest in Germany to the Black Sea in Romania, passing through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia and Bulgaria on the way.

Popular sailings are one-week sailings between Budapest in Hungary and Passau, situated in Germany and close to the Austrian border, or weeklong round trips from Passau.

You’ll also visit the city of Linz at the center of Austria’s wine-growing region, from which it might be possible to take excursions to Durnstein and Esztergom in Hungary; Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and also famous for its “Sound of Music” connections; and Melk with its vast Benedictine Abbey.

Things to Do:

Cruises on the Lower Danube take passengers east from Budapest through Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania toward the Black Sea. This is a much less explored and quieter stretch of the Danube that is also known for its rich wildlife.

Rhone/Saone

Rhone river viking

If you like food and wine, The Rhone/Saone is the river cruise region for you! It sails through Provence and Burgundy, the heartland of France and two of the country’s top wine-making regions. You’ll cruise past acres of vineyards and have many opportunities to taste the local grapes.

Typical Itinerary:

The 505-mile Rhone river flows from the Swiss Alps through southern France and into the Mediterranean Sea, west of Marseille.

Once an important trading route for the Greeks and Romans, today’s cruises run along the southernmost stretch. The main itinerary is a seven-night cruise from Lyon to Arles or nearby Avignon, or the reverse. Some cruises also depart from Chalon-sur-Saone, just north of Lyon.

Unlike Rhine and Danube itineraries, which include long periods of cruising, French programs on The Rhone River are generally much shorter with more time offered ashore and less ground covered during the duration of the cruise.

Things to Do:

There really is only one option on the Rhone; take advantage of being in France and add a couple of nights in Paris to the start or end of the cruise – It will give you time to have a taste of the highlights, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe.

Seine

The Seine River flows thru Northern France. You will see Paris, Monet’s garden in Giverny and poignant wartime cemeteries and the Normandy landing beaches are among the unique features of The Seine river.

Typical Itinerary:

Rising in Burgundy, the Seine flows north through Paris into Normandy and empties into the English Channel at Le Havre.

Often Cruises are about 7 nights and are sailing from the heart of Paris to Rouen or Caudebec or back. At the start of the cruise, ships provide passengers with some of the best views in town as many moor close to classic sights such as Notre Dame Cathedral or the Eiffel Tower (although check; some lines do dock in an alternate location outside downtown). They all spend at least one night docked in Paris with a guided panoramic tour taking in the main sights, plus free time to shop or order a coffee and croissant in one of the many street cafes before setting sail and meandering through idyllic scenery toward the Normandy coast.

Douro

enticing_douro ama river cruise

In a Nutshell:

If you like scenery, you’ll love cruising on Portugal’s Douro river, rising in Spain and winding through rugged and dramatic green landscapes until it reaches the Atlantic in Porto, home to famous-name port houses. The fortified wine is the national drink and there’ll be plenty of opportunity to taste it en route.

Typical Itinerary:

There is only one itinerary on the Douro or “River of Gold”; a 130-mile seven-night sailing from Porto to Vega de Terron, on the border with Spain. Here river vessels have to turn back because the river is no longer navigable. Most cruises begin or end with an overnight stay in the hilly UNESCO World Heritage city of Porto and the option to take a trip on a traditional rabelo, the wooden vessels that once carried port.

Once a wild, turbulent waterway, the Douro has been tamed by five dams including the landmark Carrapatelo, the world’s deepest lock, and sailing past the 115-foot walls is an incredible experience. Cruises stop at Regua, in the heart of port wine country. You’ll also make a stop at Pinhao, a favorite haunt for port wine tastings, and Vega de Terron for a full-day excursion to the city of Salamanca in Spain. A two-hour drive from Vega de Terron, Salamanca is an architectural gem with a grand main square built in Spanish baroque style and surrounded by three-story arcade buildings.

Since no nighttime navigation is permitted on the Douro, you won’t miss out on any of the passing landscapes. River ships on the Douro are smaller than those on the Rhine and Danube, creating a more intimate on board atmosphere.

Elbe

Meissen Elbe River Viking Germany

In a Nutshell:

An Elbe cruise is for anyone who loves discovering the past. During an Elbe River Cruise you will explore Europe’s lesser known rivers. There will be time in the fascinating cities of Berlin and Prague at the start and end of the cruise, plus the chance to discover the birthplace of the Reformation along the way.

Typical Itinerary:

The Elbe rises in the Czech Republic, flows into Germany and empties into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, near Hamburg.

There is only one cruise option — seven nights, sailing either from Magdeburg in Germany to Melnik in the Czech Republic, or vice versa. Cruises run between the culture-rich cities of Berlin and Prague, and in between are the vineyards of Saxony and rocky landscapes of the soaring sandstone massif south of Dresden. This restored city of Dresden, immortalized by Italian painter Canaletto as the “Florence on the Elbe,” is among the must-see sights. Destroyed during World War II, the city rose from the rubble and highlights include the rebuilt Cathedral of Our Lady, with its distinctive bell-shaped dome, which is the symbol of Dresden.

Things to Do:

There is only the one itinerary on the Elbe, but you really must add extra days in Berlin and Prague at the start and end (included in some itineraries) to make this vacation complete.

10 Reasons To Travel To Europe in The Fall

August just about over. This means the start of a new season and brand new travel opportunities. Now is the perfect time to plan your next trip to the places you didn’t get to visit in the summer, you may just find visiting in the fall is even better! Here are the top 10 reasons to travel to Europe in the Fall.

Prague Viking River Cruise Elegant ELbe

  1. You miss the summer crowds! Imagine, just walking into the museum of your choice… with no lines! Or dining in the famed restaurants you have read all about?  (August in Europe is known for closing places down so the employees can have some time off.)

Ask a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 for the best rates on airfare and vacation packages!

  1. The autumn temperatures, are better for active vacations. You avoid the warmer heat in the 90’s for the more comfortable 70’s and 80’s, fall is the perfect time to get outside! The cooler temperatures make a bike tour or outdoor adventure much more pleasant.

  1. Changing of the seasons. We always hear about the change of leaves and colors for the U.S., did you know the same goes for many European destinations? Imagine the hills of Tuscany golden, to match the light!

Ask a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 for the best rates on airfare and vacation packages!

  1. Your photos won’t look like everyone else’s. Since there is fewer strangers in the backgrounds, you will see more of the fall colors highlighting the city and landscapes, along with more beautiful sunsets.

  1. Getting Time off. You can probably take time off work more easily because everyone else is fighting over the summer holidays.

  1. Wine lovers: during the autumn months is harvest season for wines. August for Italy, and September and October in France. Amazing festivals often coincide with harvest time!

It is wider across than the distance from New York to Los Angeles but has a population of only 23 million people. Read these helpful travel tips and get ready for an amazing vacation!

All travelers to Australia must carry a passport valid for six months beyond your intended stay.

A valid visa is required for all people wishing to travel to Australia. Visitors of all nationalities (except Australian and New Zealand passport holders) must obtain a visa prior to arrival. Please contact a travel team agent at 1-800-788-0829 for further details.

Currency

The Australian unit of currency is the Australian dollar.

Credit Cards & Currency Exchange

money-credit-card

You can find money exchange locations at all international airports.  You can also exchange foreign currency at banks and even large hotels.  The normal banking hours in Australia are from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday thru Friday, but these can change at any time. All major credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, banks and most stores.

Goods and Services Tax

Most goods and services are subject to a Goods and Services Tax (GST), and are already included in the displayed price.

Electricity

The electric current used in Australia is 240 volts AC, 50 hertz. Sockets take two or three flat, not rounded, prongs. North Americans and Europeans will need to buy a converter before they leave home. It isn’t recommended to wait until you arrive in Australia to buy these as Aussie stores are likely to only carry converters to fit American and European outlets.  Power does not start automatically when you plug in an appliance; you need to flick the switch located beside the socket to the “on” position.

Driving in Australia

misc-car-travelteam

Tourists may drive in Australia on a valid overseas driver’s license if it’s legible in English. If not, you will need to get an international driving permit and you must always carry your original license with you. Only drive on the left-hand side of the road. Please contact a travel team agent at 1-800-788-0829 for further details.

Fine Food and Wine

If you love fine food and wine, you’ll fall in love with Australia. Australia is a multi-cultural nation with many different types of food throughout the country. Australia has local wines, whiskeys and a growing microbrewery scene as well.

Tipping

Tips are not typically expected for normal service, even in restaurants and bars. However, tipping in appreciation is at your discretion.

What to Pack

packing clothes

Australian lifestyle is usually quite informal and it is typical to dress for comfort. Make sure to pack sunscreen and a hat, lightweight, comfortable clothes and shoes, and if you are visiting during winter, leave space for a jacket or sweater. If you are planning a special occasion you may want to bring a more formal outfit.

Climate

Australia is fairly temperate for most of the year, although climate can vary due to the sheer size of the continent. The northern states typically experience tropical warm weather much of the time; the southern states have cooler winters. Australia is also one of the driest continents on earth, the annual rainfall is less than 23 inches! Australia’s seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. December to February is summer; March to May is autumn; June to August is winter; and September to November is spring.

Carry On Packing List For International Flights

Carry On Packing List For International Flights
travel1-travelteam-250x190-e1438639181545

5 Things You Won’t Want To Forget

1. Passport and pen: Most international destinations will require you to fill out immigration and customs forms, usually on the plane, en route; you will need to write requiring your passport number. You will need a pen to fill these forms out.

2. Any necessary medication and toiletries: Delays are to be expected when traveling, but with international flights, it can be a long time before you meet up with the luggage you’ve checked. Make sure you keep your important daily medications with you so you don’t miss a dose. Bring your toothbrush, face wash, baby wipes, deodorant, dry shampoo and more so you feel fresh during your travels.

3. Water bottle: When flying on long flights, you can expect to get dehydrated. Make sure you always have enough water on hand by packing an empty water bottle from home and filling it up once you’ve passed through security.

4. Change of clothes, extra socks and bathing suit: Nothing is perfect in life, and things can happen. Bags sometimes get lost, things spill during flight. You’ll be happy to have an extra set of clothes with you if something unpleasant happens. Going to a beach location? Bring your bathing suit in your carry on, that way you won’t miss any fun in the sun just because you don’t have your checked bags.

5. Snacks: You should always bring some healthy snacks like fruit, granola bars, nuts and veggies on the plane with you. Sometimes it can be hard to get healthy snacks, especially at times when you’re most hungry.

Complete Packing List for an International Flight

When packing for an international flight, you have to select what’s essential to bring on your trip. It is always good to pack light while bringing essentials with you. Before you go, here is a list of what you should get ready to take before stepping foot on the plane:

  • Passport
  • International credit cards
  • Health insurance card
  • Travel documents, like hotel reservations and car rental information
  • Eyemask
  • Headphones
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Light jacket or scarf
  • Ear plugs
  • Sleep aids
  • Glasses and contact case with solution
  • Change of clothes, socks and bathing suit
  • Water bottle
  • Snacks
  • Pen
  • Entertainment, such as books, magazines or an iPad

Best Time to Travel to Australia

Best Time to Travel to Australia

People often ask when is the most ideal time to travel to Australia. We have put together this helpful guide of seasons, temperatures and tips, to help you decide when you should travel down under…

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Australia & New Zealand in 19 days

22 Day Australia & New Zealand

Seasons in Australia

Did you know the seasons in Australia are reversed to our seasons here in the USA?

Spring: September – November: The climate is great, not too hot, not too cold

Summer: December – February: It can get a bit hot

Autumn: March – May: A great time to travel, the climate is lovely

Winter: June – August: It might be cool but not cold

Temperatures in Australia:

uluru1-australia-travelteam

It is helpful to consider that Australia is about the size of the United States, in other words, Australia is huge with large variances in temperatures on a single day. The further North you go, which is closer to the equator, the hotter it gets, so this is opposite of the USA.

There are not too many snowbound cities in Australia – The coldest it gets might be around 32 F in tourist destinations like Uluru or Canberra during July/August which is winter.

The hottest dry heat is around 100 F in Uluru in summer – December/January

Rainfall in Australia

kakadu litchenfield falls untamed australia aat kingss

Wet Season: November – May(most rainfall occurs in January, February and March).

Let’s talk about the Tropics of Australia which is the region north of the “Tropic Of Capricorn” or the top third of Australia. Cities included are Cairns and Darwin. If you want to explore the Outback in the far North, you might not want to do this during the wet season.

Now if you plan do go scuba diving, well, it won’t matter if you go in the wet season, you will be getting wet anyways!

Stinger Season: November – May (wet season)

Little marine critters and jellyfish that sting are collectively known “Stingers”.  They generally don’t affect the Great Barrier Reef.  Stingers aren’t super energetic and have not caused any problems around the reef and islands but occur mainly around the rivers, creeks and beaches north of, and around, Bundaberg. They are easy to avoid, but cause discomfort if you are stung.  The more serious ones are ‘Box Jellyfish’ which have been known to be lethal. Stinger season is from typically November through May.  If there are stingers present there will most likely be signs posted.  At these locations you will need to swim inside the stinger enclosures provided or wear a stinger suit.  A stinger suit is like a ‘sun suit’ – a long leg, long sleeve, one piece swimsuit typically made from lycra (or similar).

Seasons for Flights to Australia:

airplane3-travelteam

Airfares to Australia are affected by your dates of travel.

Cheap: Airfare during less expensive seasons is usually from May to Jun 8 approximately, and July 24 – September 21.

Mid: Feburary 1 – April 30; June 9 – July 23; and September 27 – December 8.

Peak: December 9 – January 31; this tend to be the most expensive time to fly.

Staying Fit On a River Cruise

Staying Fit On a River Cruise

Are you getting ready to head out on a gorgeous getaway on a river cruise full of breathtaking sights and authentic cuisine? Do you want some tips on how to stay healthy and fit while on a River Cruise? Read on for these useful tips to keep you active during a River Cruise…

1  Quick workouts add up

If you are used to spending 45 minutes or an hour at the gym 4 times a week, there isn’t a need to stress if you don’t have the time to spend this much time. There are plenty of exercises and workouts you can do with little time and equipment in your own room.

Tip: Start your morning with 5 minutes of deep breathing and a quick 20 minute total body workout. Do a short, high intensity workout; start by jogging in place, do some jumping jacks, move to push ups, squats, kick backs, and keep rotating exercises to get a good sweat and pump. Another great on the go workout is to use a jump rope, this takes hardly any equipment or space, just a little coordination, you can do this without a rope too.

2.  Get Moving Outdoors

A great thing about River Cruises is you get to visit the most gorgeous landscapes along the river and also get a chance to get out. When you dock, go for a bike ride. Most River Cruises ships have onboard bikes. If not, find out a local spot you can rent a bike from and go explore for a few hours.

Another great activity that has become increasingly popular is Stand Up Paddling (SUP). You can basically SUP anywhere there is calm water and the river is a great place to do so. Although bike rental places might be easier to access, don’t be afraid to do some research and ask where you can find a place to do stand up paddling. It’s so much fun, much easier than it looks but a great workout.

3.    Use the Facilities on The Boat

The boat may have a gym or a pool that you can use. If you have access to a gym on board, do exercises that target more than one muscle group at a time; this way you can workout quickly and efficiently. Some examples are: squat with biceps curl, biceps curl-to-shoulder press & lunge-to-shoulder press.

Maybe you want to go into the pool for a dip, swim some laps or maybe even some water aerobics. All of these are great workouts either on the go or at home, and easy on the joints.

5       Stay Hydrated

This is probably the biggest tip; drink enough water! It can be really easy to remember to drink enough water when at home or at the office when it is part of the routine. But oftentimes, we can forget to drink enough water when on vacation (while not forgetting to hydrate with stiffer beverages). If you are going to drink wine, beer or alcohol make sure you drink plenty of water during your vacation. This keeps you hydrated and your metabolism functioning so you get the most out of your experience.

More Expensive Days to Fly

Most expensive days to fly, U.S. domestic: Usually Fridays and Sundays

Most expensive days to fly, international: Usually weekend dates

Why is this? Supply and demand. Since airlines know most people prefer to fly on these dates, they know they can raise rates because people are willing to pay more for flights on these days.

Think about this: People who fly on Fridays are often vacation travelers who want to make the most of a weekend getaway or even a week long trip by starting out on a Friday, the earliest possible moment. Business travelers with early Monday meetings like flying Sundays so they be fresh for early Monday meetings, and they won’t have to worry about being late if there are Monday flight delays.
