How Far in Advance Should You Plan Your Vacation?

How Far in Advance Should You Plan Your Vacation?

A really good question that should be asked is how far in advance should you plan your vacation. The answer will vary depending on each type of trip and where you are going. Trip planning should begin anywhere from 3-24 months in advance.

Cruises

You should book a cruise 12-18 months in advance, sometimes even 24 months. Why? Most companies will offer early booking incentives when they release their dates each year. They may also offer some perks such as shipboard credit or an airport pickup with early bookings. Room categories vary as well so you want to be able to get the room you want. The best rooms sell out quickly.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

 Holiday Season Trips

Traveling during the holiday season? This applies to Christmas, Spring Break and Summer (keep in mind the summer season is reversed in the southern hemisphere).

You want to book your trip 12-15 months in advance. The holiday season is the high season times 20! Prices are higher and keep increasing because most hotels, tour operators and suppliers pretty much expect to sell out.

High Season

High season can vary depending on where you are going. In Europe high season is June – August. In Fiji and Tahiti, high season is July – September as the weather is dry and sunny. Book your trip 8-12 months in advance when you’re traveling during high season.

Not sure when is high season for your destination? Ask a travel team agent by calling 1-800-788-0829

Independent Trips

If you’re traveling during shoulder season, on your own (not on a cruise or with any sort of set itinerary), book your trip 6-9 months in advance.

8 Ways to Keep Disasters from Ruining your Trip

8 Ways to Keep Disasters from Ruining your Trip

You bought your tickets, planned your trip and are ready to go enjoy your vacation. Nothing can spoil the best trip more than simple disasters that could have been avoided. Read these tips on how you can avoid mishaps and have your best trip…

  • Sign up for PreCheck for Security

No one likes standing in long lines. If you sign up for TSA preCheck it costs about $85 for 5 years and kids are free if they are under 12 years of age.

This will make your trip go a lot smoother and stress free.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

  • Don’t Pack a Big Bag

Why pay $50 to check a bag full of items you may not need or use? You could take a carry on and save that money for a great meal. Plus, it is pretty difficult to lose a carry-on bag, rather than losing a checked bag.

  • Keep Your Receipts

Keep all receipts so you can easily fill out a claim form with the airlines incase your flight is cancelled or bags are lost. If you put bag tags on, your claims can be documented. Take a photo of your receipts and also keep paper copies as well.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

  • Don’t Over Pack

We all like having outfits to choose from. But if you pack too many things, you might have to pay an overweight bag charge. If you need to take a large bag, make sure it weighs less than 50 lbs, as most fees start at 51 lbs.

  • Don’t forget your electronics and chargers

Your phone nowadays is most likely an all in one; a flashlight, camera, boarding pass and more. Don’t forget to bring your charger and if visiting a foreign country, bring a plug or adapter that will fit their outlets.

  • Don’t forget snacks

Bring something to munch on from home. It will save you money and you can eat what you want, when you want.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

  • Don’t leave your hotel room without a final room-check

Before you leave to check out, do a final sweep to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything.

  • Use Common Sense

A lot of disasters can be avoided with using your common sense. Leave valuables at home, don’t flash your cash, and don’t venture down dark alleys or streets. Be on the look out for anything unusual and trust your gut.

Things That Might Surprise First Time Visitors to New Zealand

Things That Might Surprise First Time Visitors to New Zealand

Besides being astonishingly beautiful,New Zealand is a land full of surprises, culture, and more. Some things you may already know, but don’t feel bad if you don’t.  Here are some things that just might surprise you when you visit New Zealand — and you just might want to visit New Zealand you haven’t planned a trip there yet!

1  New Zealand is not the Same as Australia

Yes, some people think they are the same, or similar but they are actually very different. The North Island has ties much closer to Polynesia, and The South Island may seem like you are visiting Scotland. The landscape is like Ireland, due to the rain, or even Canada. People roll their r’s here too.

2   The Largest Polynesian Population in The World is in Auckland

New Zealand has about 4 million people and 260,000 identify as Polynesian; most live in Auckland. Polynesians are those of Cook Island, Tuvalu, Tongan, and Samoan descent.

3   Rugby – It is NOT just a Sport Here

Rugby is a big way for Kiwis to come together, feel national pride and boy are they good at it! Rugby is an important part of the country’s national identity. The ‘All Blacks’ are the name of the National Rugby team and if you visit any café on a Monday morning after a loss, the mood is downright depressing. They hate the Wallabies, The National Australian Rugby team, with a passion.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

4   There isn’t much that can kill you here

You can go hiking and feel safe that there are no lethal spiders, snakes and no crocodiles to encounter if you wade in the waters.

5   You can get 4 Seasons in 1 DAY! Summers are short

New Zealand has a mild climate and plenty of rainfall –  Summer doesn’t officially arrive in the South Island until at least Christmas. You will need to pack a jersey (jumper) even in January, along with your jandals (thongs/flip flops). Avoid beach resort areas in winter, it’s pretty cold.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

6   Napier has the most Art Deco buildings in the world, next to South Beach in Miami

After a massive earthquake that levelled the city in 1931, the entire city was rebuilt. Napier has an impressive collection of art deco buildings and was nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is the biggest concentration in the Southern Hemisphere of buildings in the styles of the 1930s.

7  Kiwis Love, Love their Tip Top Ice Cream

Kiwis claim Tip Top ice cream is the best in the southern hemisphere. They’re also partial to chocolate-coated marshmallow fish and pineapple lumps. You can usually buy these treats at the local ice cream shop.

8    The Coffee is Fantastic!

You can get great coffee in New Zealand. Kiwis are just as obsessed with coffee as we are. Apparently, this is where instant coffee was invented, and they also claim to have devised the world’s first flat white (Australia argues it did).

9   Kiwis are so very friendly

Don’t be surprised if they stop just to chat, help with directions, and tell you about their family. They also want to know why you’re visiting New Zealand, where you’re going and how long you’re staying. Strangers will might even feed lunch to your child playing with their kids on the beach.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

10   Fifteen percent of New Zealand’s population are Maori

Maori is an official language of New Zealand. The indigenous Māori people a huge part of society and government. Māori customs play a big part in the lives of many modern Māori in New Zealand and are a big part of Kiwi culture.

The History of Airline Fees: Bags, Food & More

The History of Airline Fees: Bags, Food & More

Have you ever wondered when and why airlines started charging for things that used to be free? Anyone who travels a lot knows to expect certain fees. Here is a brief history of some of the fees airlines charge….

The 1st Fees

American Airlines announced in May 2008 announced it would begin charging a fee for checked bags. The early bag fees weren’t expensive; initially it was charged $15 per bag.

Why did airlines: The airlines said they needed fees to help with the high cost of jet fuel and other costs. It was the after effects of the recession of 2008. Also, fees earn airlines tons of money, we are talking about Billions of dollars.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Food & Drinks, Blankets & Pillows

Although some airlines charge for these, some of these amenities are starting to return without fees.

In 2001, after 9/11 meals were dropped from many domestic flights.

Delta began charging for snack boxes on some flights in 2003. United started selling snack boxes for $5 in 2005 instead of serving meals. In 2008 US Airways began charging for all drinks! Then in 2009 they stopped because no other airline was charging for drinks. In 2017, Delta began offering free meals in coach/economy class for certain routes.

Pillows & Blankets

Jet Blue started charged $7 for a pillow and blanket (which passengers can keep) in 2008.  US Airways began charging for pillows/blankets in 2009. The airline eventually merged with American Airlines. As of now, a few airlines still offer blankets and pillows for free or for a fee.

Bottom line: There are 2 reasons most of these fees won’t be going away anytime soon. First, most passengers have accepted these fees and are willing to pay; second, Airlines make alot of money off these fees! So travel smart, take a carry on bag, bring a lunch, and anything else you can do to make your trip comfortable, fun, and stress free!

Driving in Europe: Do You Need To Have an International Driving Permit?

Driving in Europe: Do You Need To Have an International Driving Permit

Traveling to another country is exciting. Renting a car is a great way to explore on your own. When you travel to other countries, and plan on renting a car, you should know every country has its own rules on who can drive or rent a car. Here are some tips about what you might need to drive in Europe.

In most European Countries you will just need your passport and driver’s license. But some require an International Drivers Permit . An International Drivers Permit (IDP) needs to be used  with a valid United States license in order to be valid.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

In The United States, IDPs can be obtained at American Automobile Association (AAA) offices and from the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA), typically for a fee of $15 or $20. These are the only two organizations in the United States that are authorized to provide international drivers permits, so beware of any other companies that say they offer them.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Countries that Require an IDP

It’s best to check with the tourist board for the country you’re visiting to get information on exactly what you need to drive in another country. Generally,  most European countries do not require American drivers to have an IDP.

However, the following countries do require International Driver’s Permits in conjunction with valid United States’ driver’s licenses: Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Slovenia, and Spain.

Be aware of the rules of the road in other countries. You can contact the embassy or consulate of the country you’re planning on visiting to inquire about their requirements.

Don’t fall for any websites that say they provide IDP’s. Always be sure to check you’re going through the only two licensed issuers of IDPs: AAA and AATA.
