The IRS is Revoking Passports From Americans Who Owe Taxes

The IRS is Revoking Passports From Americans Who Owe Taxes
world_traveler_passport

Did you know that if you owe taxes, you could be denied a passport? According to the IRS, over 300,000 Americans with “seriously delinquent” overdue tax payments will be denied passports or passport renewals if they do not pay the money they owe.

Because of a law passed by Congress in 2015, the IRS has the power to block individual’s passports in cases where more than $51,000 is owed. Since February, the agency has been sending tens of thousands of violators’ names to the State Department, which oversees passport applications.

If a person does not resolve their tax issues before applying for a passport, their application will be delayed or denied. Also, those with seriously delinquent tax payments who have already applied for a new U.S. passport will not have a new passport issued to them until they have resolved their tax issues with the IRS.

According to the state department, people with overdue taxes who are overseas, may be eligible for a limited passport that would be valid for a direct return back the USA. If someone is financially distressed, the IRS says it will offer payment plans, and also for those who are bankrupt, have been victims of identity fraud, or living in a disaster area that has been financially declared so their passports are not put at risk. You should contact your IRS office for information and for a full list of guidelines.

How to Navigate Transportation in Sydney

How to Navigate Transportation in Sydney

Sydney is a huge city of more than five million people, and finding your way around the Harbor City can be quite the task. Keep reading to learn all the tips and tricks you need to navigate Sydney’s transport system.

The best way to get around Sydney is by Sydney Trains – it is ideal for travelers looking to visit a number of the city’s best things to do. The bus system has routes that criss-cross the city, but beware of Sydney traffic. Rental cars are recommended for driving to and from the city but not in the city, since traffic is heavy. Walking is a wonderful way to explore, but Sydney is much too large to be done on foot alone. And a trip on a ferry is a must-do for the views alone.

Train

misc-train-travelteam

The Sydney Train network is made up of eight lines and 178 stations. Central Station at the southern end of the city center is the hub of the rail network; the City Circle line connecting Central with Circular Quay loops through most of Sydney’s major attractions.

Trains generally operate between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m., and NightRide bus services replace train routes during this overnight period. Try to avoid catching the train during the rush hour peak — generally between 7:30 – 9 a.m. in the morning and 5 – 6:30 p.m. in the evening — when crowds are at their busiest.

Local tip: Pick up an Opal card. You actually need one of these tap-on ‘smart cards’ to travel on public transport in Sydney, and there are more than 2,000 Opal retailers around Sydney where you can grab yours. There’s no fee for the card itself, you just need to load it up with at least $10.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Bus

city train bus

About 250 million passengers a year jump on a bus in Sydney, but the Harbour City’s winding roads and the heavy traffic means that visitors should only join them when they really have to. Hundreds of bus routes cover areas that trains don’t — the Northern Beaches and the Eastern Suburbs, for example — but short inner-city journeys are often better tackled on foot than waiting for a bus that’s likely to be late, crowded and choked by traffic.

Local tip: Remember to stick your hand out to hail the bus you want to catch. Sydney’s bus drivers have no qualms sailing right past the stop unless a potential passenger is clearly flagging them down with an arm outstretched, so don’t be coy.

Ferry

The ferry is the way to get around the Harbour City, and although it’s more expensive than trains and buses, you get what you pay for. Paying $7 one-way might seem steep for a daily commute but that’s a bargain for visitors to Sydney wanting front-row seats to the glistening harbour. One-way fares start at AU$6.20 (or $4.50). Discounts are also available for seniors, students and children.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Car

blue-car-icon

If you’re planning to visit multiple Aussie cities or want to take a daytrip outside of Sydney, consider renting a car. If you plan on staying within the city, a car will become an expensive. Parking hard to come by, and traffic is a headache.

Taxi

taxi

In Sydney, taxi fare is determined by the number of kilometers traveled, so you might find the fares higher here than in the U.S. During peak hours (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) and on weekends, additional charges may apply. To hail a taxi, signal for one on the street or make an advance reservation by phone. Expect to pay about AU$2 per kilometer (or roughly $3 per mile) when traveling during regular hours.

How To Avoid The Worst Airline Fees

How To Avoid The Worst Airline Fees

When planning a trip, most of us focus on where to go, getting the cheapest tickets and the best deals on hotels. We may not also consider expensive airline fees and how to avoid them. Read on for simple strategies you can do to avoid the worst airline fees.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Change fees

This can be one of the heftiest fees of all, the change fee. Change fees can cost $200 for domestic tickets and $400 or more for internationals flights.

Here are 2 ways to avoid it:

  1. Review your ticket within 24 hours: U.S. airlines (and some international airlines) allow shoppers to change or cancel a ticket within 24 hours of purchase with no cancellation fee.

  1. Buy a refundable ticket: You won’t pay a change fee if your plans fall apart but this is not a good option for most of us because refundable tickets are very expensive.

Fees for food

water bottle pic

With the except of small packs of peanuts, pretzels or maybe a cookie, there very few meals served in coach these days. Here’s what to do.

Bring your own lunch: It will be a lot cheaper and probably a lot tastier.

Bring an empty water bottle: More and more airports have water stations beyond security; veteran travelers have learned to fill up empty bottles after they get past the checkpoint.

Seat fees

airline-seats

The easiest thing to do is don’t pay for them because you will get a seat. You might have to settle for a middle seat. Try this instead.

Keep checking: After you make your reservation, check online to see if a better seat has opened up (a free seat); if not, keep checking each day but your best chance is usually during check-in which starts 24 hours before departure.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Check the kiosk, see the agent: If you still can’t find a better seat, see if anything is available through the airport kiosk, or ask a gate agent. No guarantees but you might get lucky.

Bag fees

businesswoman walking with luggage

businesswoman walking with luggage

Checked baggage fees start at $50 round-trip on many airlines. Using a free carry-on bag is the best way to go on many airlines. Check your airline’s policy on bags, or ask your travel team agent for information by calling 1-800-788-0829

Overweight bag fees

overstuffed-2-suitcase-and-side-view-not-overstuffed-suitcase

All airlines have weight limits for checked-bags and some have limits for carry-ons as well. Know how much your airline allows and weigh bags at home before you go to the airport because overweight fees can run into the hundreds of dollars.

Money Saving Tips When Visiting Australia

Money Saving Tips When Visiting Australia

Traveling in Australia can be pricey. Not everything you do in Australia has to break the bank. There are ways you can save money during your trip and we put together a quick guide on how you can save money while in Australia…

Get a phone plan

mobile cell phone

These days every one has their cellphone with them and wants to stay in touch with family and friends. You might want to check in on family, call a taxi or local places where you are staying. Roaming costs on your cell phone can be very expensive. Consider signing up for a local phone package with a company like Telestra. You want a great phone package with great coverage throughout the country. Or contact your carrier and ask if they offer phone plans while you travel so you don’t incur high roaming fees.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Don’t Tip

handing-over-money

It isn’t really customary to tip an extra 10 or 20 percent in Australia. Hospitality workers are paid a dignified wage in Australia, so there’s no need to tip like you would in somewhere like the United States.

Eat cheap meals

bar pub eating

Eat at a pub – you will not only get a great cultural experience, but most pubs do food specials too.

Catch an Uber

blue-car-icon

Taxis in Sydney are expensive. When public transport isn’t an option – especially after midnight, when Sydney’s train and bus services stop for the night – an Uber will almost always be a cheaper and more pleasant experience than trying to hail a cab.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Go to a free museum

museum art

The Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Maritime Museum, The Rocks Discovery Museum, the Nicholson Museum packed full of antiquities – you can visit all of these terrific museums around Sydney without having to part with a cent, which is like Christmas for penny-pinching sight-seers.

Hit up the great outdoors

1384571-bondi-to-coogee-walk_1

There are so many gorgeous attractions in Austrlia, and the beaches are heavenly. Check out Bondi, Manly, Coogee, Cronulla, Bronte, Balmoral, Tamarama, Freshwater, the list goes on – and it doesn’t cost to visit any of them. If sun, surf and sand isn’t your cup of tea, there’s no shortage of parks and cycling routes to enjoy.

Avoid Convenience Stores

retail store women

The streets around Circular Quay and The Rocks are littered with convenience stores selling disposable souvenirs and overpriced food and drink – so unless you feel like paying $6 for a can of Coke and $22.50 for a fridge magnet of a koala, avoid them. Stock up at large supermarket chains Woolworths and Coles to save some coin.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Seek out free internet

wifi internet

The internet in Australia is slow and expensive. You can find WiFi for free at most libraries, McDonalds, and most likely your hotel. If you have questions, ask your travel team agent by calling 1-800-788-0829!

10 Things You Should Never Wear When Traveling Abroad

10 Things You Should Never Wear When Traveling Abroad

When you travel, it is wise to keep in mind local customs, attitudes and religious beliefs when choosing your outfits for traveling. Aside from being safe, this will also help from offending the locals or looking like a tourist target for theives. Here is a list of 10 things you should probably leave at home when traveling overseas.

Immodest Clothing

tank top

If you are traveling to a country with deep religious views, like the Middle East it is wise to dress conservatively. For women, avoid miniskirts, tank tops, short sleeved shirts and in some places, capri pants. Men should avoid shorts and sleeveless tops in many Middle Eastern countries or when entering a church or other holy place.

Bring along pants and long skirts and bring a shawl to cover up (women), just in case. The general rule is to cover your shoulders, knees and ankles to avoid stares or even being denied entry to certain places.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Flashy Jewelry

diamonds

Leave expensive, flashy jewlrey at home. There is no need to impress anyone and you don’t want to look like a target. If you need a little bling, wear costume jewlrey.

Open Toe Shoes and Sneakers

sneakers

In many parts of the world, sneakers are for sporting activities only. In countries such as Spain and Italy, white tennis shoes are looked down upon, instead wear comfortable leather walking shoes in the city, and keep them polished and in good shape. People will know you are a tourist if you wear white, lace-up tennis shoes.

If you’re traveling anywhere but a beach, it’s generally wise to stick with closed-toe shoes, which can help prevent insect bites or cuts on your toes from gravelly surfaces.

Shorts

It may be hot, but in some cultures like Indonesia and Vietnam, they don’t wear shorts for everyday walking around. You might want to reserve your shorts for beaches, and not exploring the city.

Religious Imagery, Curse Words or National Flags

It is wise to avoid clothing with religious, military symbols swear words, national flags, and any words or symbols written in a language you cannot translate. You don’t want to spark an emotional debate while on vacation. Leave religious jewelry, even cross necklaces, at home. If you must, wear them under your clothes so they’re not visible to anyone.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Bright Colors

clothes bright colors

You might want to stick with conservative colors like gray, navy, tan or black. You want to look put together and wear well-fitting clothing. The key is to blend in, not stick out with unwanted attention, so you might want to leave the neon colors at home.

Inappropriate Colors

Stay away from black or blue in central Africa, large biting flies seem to like this color. In parts of Asia, white is the color of funerals and mourning.  Good to keep in mind.

Jeans

Wear well-fitting and wrinkle free jeans. You also don’t want to wear ripped or baggy jeans, you might look disrespectful if you wear them to churches, mosques, or holy sites.

Backpacks

backpack-sm

A large backpack is practical when trekking across Europe or Asia. Make sure to bring a secondary bag like a small fabric tote for everyday touring around cities. Any type of backpack might mark you as tourist and are easy to reach into and steal things from if you wear on your back on a busy train or bus.

Cameras

tourist camera

Nothing screams tourist like a camera permanently hanging from your neck. Not only do you stand out, but you may also get targeted by thieves. Carry a camera or smartphone that you can fit into your small bag.

Dressing appropriately when traveling helps you fit in with locals, and also protects you from standing out to pickpockets. When in doubt, look at what the locals are wearing. You can also ask your travel team agent for tips and information!

What to Do if You Only Have 1 Week to Visit Australia

What to Do if You Only Have 1 Week to Visit Australia

Australia is so vast it is impossible to see it all in 1, 2 weeks or even 3 weeks. So although we recommend spending at least 2 weeks in Australia, there are a few things you can experience if you only have 1 week. In 1 week you will only be able to see perhaps one city, or a few natural wonders. Any trip to Australia is memorable, so with careful planning you can maximize your time and be able to see some of the major sights.

Don’t try to cram every sight in and exhaust yourself. Use the following guide to make the most out of your trip. If you only go for 1 week to Sydney, you can still have spectacular introduction to this great city. Must see sights are the Sydney Harbor Opera House, The Sydney Harbor Bridge, The Queen Victoria building, which offers a high end, elegant shopping experience; see the Sydney Aquarium, and Bondi beach which is one of the top 10 beaches in Australia.

goaway blue mountains

Another majestic sight to see is The Blue Mountains, a 90 minute drive from Sydney. The Blue Mountains is comprised of a kaleidoscope of contrasts and color rich in Aussie bush and wildlife that has a blue-haze horizon. Take a trip to the Blue Mountains and experience a true escape from the negatives of city life and the rush-rush of urban atmospheres while providing a chance to experience a great combination of spectacular scenery, wildlife, plants and the clean freshness of mountain air.

Now if you want to experience and see sights besides the city, there are 2 main choices. The Great Barrier Reef, but you have to allow time for flying. The other choice is Uluru, or Ayers Rock. Ayers Rock is one of the most impressive landmarks in Australia.

Here is a sample itinerary of what to see in 1 week:

Day 1: Arrive in Sydney

Check into your hotel and recover from jet lag. If you arrive in the morning and have a full day ahead of you, try to stay up. Head to Circular Quay, get a fantastic view of Sydney Harbour Bridge before visitng Sydney Opera House and soaking up some history at The Rocks.

.

Day 2: Explore Sydney

Ride to the top of Sydney Tower; you can view all of Sydney’s landmarks, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour, and even the Blue Mountains beyond. For an introduction to Australia’s wildlife, head to Taronga Zoo or the Sydney Aquarium.

Day 3: The Blue Mountains

Explore the beauty of the Blue Mountains—only 2 hours from Sydney. At the end of the day, head back to Sydney and have dinner somewhere with a view of the harbor.

Day 4: Cairns, Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

Take the earliest flight you can from Sydney to Cairns—flight time is 3 hours—and check into a hotel in the city, which on such a tight schedule will make getting to the major attractions quicker and easier than staying on the out-of-town northern beaches. Explore the city a little and see some wildlife.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Day 5: A Day Trip to the Reef

The trip to the outer reef takes about 2 hours, and once there, you will spend your day on a pontoon with about 300 people. Divers must spend another 24 hours in Cairns before flying. If you prefer to snorkel, ride the glass-bottom boats, and soak up the sun,

Day 6: Kuranda, a Rainforest Village

Take a trip to the mountain village of Kuranda aboard the steam train along the Kuranda Scenic Railway, past waterfalls and gorges. In Kuranda, explore the markets and the nature parks and maybe take a Kuranda Riverboat Tour.

Day 7: Cairns to Sydney

In the morning, head to the airport for your flight to Sydney. Unless you are lucky enough to have an international flight directly out of Cairns, you will spend most of your last day in Australia returning to Sydney.

Stress Free Summer Travel Tips

Stress Free Summer Travel Tips

The first official day of summer is tomorrow, June 21st. If you haven’t already planned your summer trip, now is the time to do it, don’t delay! We came up with a list of summer travel tips to make your vacation stress free. Read on and get planning!

Work with a travel agent

Working with a travel agent can save you time and money. Travel agents are committed to making their clients’ trip the best travel experience possible. So while the summer travel season is always busy, if you work with a travel consultant to plan your summer vacations, it doesn’t have to be a frustrating one.

Book your ticket ASAP and be a little flexible

airport1-travelteam

The key to securing the best deal is flexibility in travel dates–ask your travel team agent to check for special fares or even consider flying into an alternate airport and renting a car. For overseas travel, make sure you have a valid passport, and check to see if you need additional documents, such as a visa.

Arrive early

Difficult airport parking, long lines at security checkpoints and the possibility of the airline overselling the flight and bumping passengers, should all be considered when deciding what time to arrive at the airport. Give yourself plenty of extra time. Need some incentive? Keep in mind that those who arrive earliest for an overbooked flight stand the greatest chance of staying onboard.

Keep a close eye on all your belongings

Just as flights are becoming extremely crowded, airports can also be fraught with thieves. Be aware of your surroundings and maintain a close watch over tickets, wallets, purses, and other belongings at all times.

Avoid getting bumped

airport_lines

1) Get an advance seat assignment. Passengers with seat assignments are typically only bumped if they arrive late and their seat assignment is released. 2) Check-in online. Most airlines allow you to do so within 24 hours of departure. Seat assignments that were not available at the time of ticketing may be available when checking in online. 3) Don’t be late. If all else fails, get to the airport early. Some airlines reserve a portion of their seat assignment inventory for airport check-in. If you are denied a seat assignment at check-in, put your name on the “standby” seat assignment list.

Plan itineraries and arrange accommodations well in advance

Reservations for hotels, restaurants and rental cars get booked quickly during peak travel times. Your travel agent can help you get the lowest rate and make sure your rental car has room for your family, luggage and whatever souvenirs you bring home.
