How Far in Advance Should You Plan Your Vacation?
A really good question that should be asked is how far in advance should you plan your vacation. The answer will vary depending on each type of trip and where you are going. Trip planning should begin anywhere from 3-24 months in advance.
You should book a cruise 12-18 months in advance, sometimes even 24 months. Why? Most companies will offer early booking incentives when they release their dates each year. They may also offer some perks such as shipboard credit or an airport pickup with early bookings. Room categories vary as well so you want to be able to get the room you want. The best rooms sell out quickly.
Holiday Season Trips
Traveling during the holiday season? This applies to Christmas, Spring Break and Summer (keep in mind the summer season is reversed in the southern hemisphere).
You want to book your trip 12-15 months in advance. The holiday season is the high season times 20! Prices are higher and keep increasing because most hotels, tour operators and suppliers pretty much expect to sell out.
High season can vary depending on where you are going. In Europe high season is June – August. In Fiji and Tahiti, high season is July – September as the weather is dry and sunny. Book your trip 8-12 months in advance when you’re traveling during high season.

If you’re traveling during shoulder season, on your own (not on a cruise or with any sort of set itinerary), book your trip 6-9 months in advance.
