The Best European Cities For Spring Break 2018

The Best European Cities For Spring Break 2018

Looking for a great destination to escape for Spring break? These cities offer amazing culture, food, experiences and more. Read on to discover some of the best  European cities for Spring break…

ITALY

1   Rome

romecolosseum_44409233_fotoliarf_2969_480x340 rome collette tours

Rome’s mild Mediterranean climate is a plus for visitors from the cool north, but one of the main draws will always be the pulsating energy of this city.  There are great neighborhood trattorias, quirky shops and a buzzing aperitivo scene. There are so many churches, archaeological sites, piazzas and paintings to see that a lifetime is hardly enough.

2   Venice

venice-italy-travelteam

Venice never loses its capacity to enchant. Summer brings some of the most crowds. The sheer loveliness of an exquisite city that seems miraculously built on water is a major draw for travelers. Take in Venice’s churches and museums, but don’t miss a vibrant contemporary art scene, even away from the Art Biennale. Venice is a unique, magical place 365 days a year.

3   Florence

River Cruise Florence Cathedral and the Basilica of Santa Croce from across the Arno River in Italy

Florence is one of Europe’s great art cities. There so much exquisite art and architecture, it’s difficult to know where to start. Florence is a living city with a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, and a lively culture scene that embraces opera, classical music and contemporary art. Handsome, historic, full of quirky shops and quality crafts, and close to the vine-covered hills of Chianti.

SPAIN

4    Madrid

spain-madrid-travelteam

Madrid is filled with new boutiques, delis, cafés and bars opening up every week. It’s perfect for a culture-rich long weekend or city break, with great food and a lively atmosphere at night. Madrid may be cold in winter – it is one of Europe’s capital cities – the sky is usually blue and the sunshine strong enough to allow visitors to sit at a pavement café sipping a drink.

5   Barcelona

spain-barcelona-travelteam

Barcelona is a patchwork of architectural styles and a day spent admiring them can be topped off with a sundowner on one of the city’s seven beaches before dinner at any number of family-run tapas bars. Barcelona has a relaxed pace, months of endless sunshine, unbeatable food – with the cultural and design clout of almost any city in the cold north. There are a series of festivals and events that take place in Spring, so you can set out to take in some local fun too.

6   Seville

seville-city spain gate 1

Compact, rich in history and famous for its flamenco, tapas bars and orange trees, Seville is an ideal short break destination, especially in spring before the sun becomes too scorching. Stay in the city’s old town to explore the cobbled streets of the Santa Cruz quarter and the breathtaking Alcázar Palace. Soak up the atmosphere on the banks of the Guadalquivir, and admire the views from the ancient cathedral tower and recently opened Parasol Metropol.

FRANCE

7  Paris

gate-1-paris-france-eiffel-tower-250x190

Paris is one of the world’s most beautiful cities and a vibrant, dense collection of villages. Behind the grandiose palaces and boulevards, you can discover intimate courtyards and gardens; behind historic façades are craft workshops and eminent research institutions. Perhaps the true clue to Paris’s appeal is that despite being one of the most visited cities in the world it is also intensely lived-in. With its flats, playgrounds, food markets and cafés, there is no empty heart in the center; and you, too, can play at being a Parisian.

8   Marseille

Marseille is France’s oldest city, founded 2,600 years ago by Greek traders. Recently, the emphasis has been on cultural consolidation. New and renewed museums are hitting their stride. There are enough new trams, designer hotels, galleries, chic restaurants and shops to fill a year’s-worth of lifestyle magazines. Marseille will remain magnificent with its coast of rocks, the sea, and the beat of a big port city.

THE NETHERLANDS

9   Amsterdam

holland-amsterdam4-travelteam

Amsterdam has the buzz of a metropolis, yet it’s small enough to walk or cycle almost anywhere you want. Beautiful bridges, top-ranking art museums and one of the best orchestras in the world. Amsterdam combines its glittering past with a wry, rough, rebellious contemporary edginess. Spring’s the time to come tulip-plucking, but really any season in Amsterdam has its allure.

PORTUGAL

10   Lisbon

portugal-lisbon1-travelteam

Visit Lisbon for the simple charm and maritime magic of a vintage-era Southern European capital. Set against the ever-present backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, this sun-kissed city lives in a Latin fairytale of manners and traditions. Just check out the century-old wooden trams and iron funiculars that still lurch and rumble their way among the seven steep hills over which this city lies.

CROATIA

11   Dubrovnik

The best European cities for Spring break dubrovnik1 croatia gate 1 europe

Dubrovnik is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities. It is a Unesco world heritage site and Croatia’s most up-market destination, it was once the capital of the wealthy sea-faring Republic of Ragusa (1358-1808). During its Golden Age in the 16th century, it had one of the largest merchant naval fleets in the world, with consulates in more than 50 foreign ports. Today, visitors come here for leisure, not to trade. The main draw is the charming pedestrian-only old town, packed with aristocratic palazzi and elegant Baroque churches.

IRELAND

12  Dublin

dublin4-ireland-travelteam

Ireland in spring is a beautiful place. Sights, sounds and scents fill the senses. From the energy of young lambs running around green fields, to vibrantly coloured flowers shooting up, to the fun and excitement around St Patrick’s Day. What’s not to love?

The Irish capital is full of traces of a tempestuous past, and yet the city wears the weight of this history relatively lightly. Come here for Georgian architectural elegance, a still robust pub culture, some wonderful museums and galleries, an attractive seaside location.

Bangkok, the Thai capital since 1782, is a national treasure with its Buddhist temples, palaces, floating markets on small canals, legendary nightlife and abundant shopping opportunities. It offers visitors the opportunity to experience fascinating glimpses of Thailand’s gentle culture amid the bustle of a great and diverse metropolis.

Your stay begins with a visit to the renowned Grand Palace, the former residence of Thai kings. In this complex, you will be able to relive the splendour and pageantry of the past. A highlight will be the impressive Emerald Buddha. Continue to Wat Po, one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok where the large Reclining Buddha is housed. In the evening, you will take a cruise on the Chao Phraya River which cuts through the city, taking in spectacular sights on both banks including the Temple of Dawn, and the Grand Palace. Thai delicacies will be served during the cruise. The following morning, head outside the city to Damnoen Saduak to see the colourful floating market where the customers travel in their boats to the merchants who are lined up on the sides of the canals selling their wares. Also visit the tallest Buddha pagoda in the world, the Phra Pathom Chedi. After lunch at the nearby Rose Garden, you will be entertained by a Thai cultural show including music, singing and the martial arts. Return later back to Bangkok.

Chiang Mai is the principal city in the north surrounded by the highest mountains in the country. The atmosphere here is much more serene than Bangkok. With a wall surrounding the old part of the city and over 300 ancient temples, “The Rose of the North” is famous for its history, culture, spirituality, lush hills, shopping, and fascinating tribal people.

During your stay, visit the Wat Chiang Man Temple, the oldest in the city built in the 13th Century with its two statues of Buddha, one of which is made of crystal. You’ll also visit the Wat Phra Singh, built in Northern Thai classical style with its exquisite wood carvings and the Wat Chedi Luang with its Lama style chedi (a conical shaped stupa). The last temple to be visited is the Wat Suan Dok built in the 14th Century and one of the most famous for Monk studies. After this, head to the expansive Varoros Market, where you can buy almost anything. The afternoon is free to explore further, shop etc.

The next morning, travel outside the city to Doi Suthep, a temple built on top of a mountain with amazing views of the surrounding countryside and even Chiang Mai in the distance. After this, visit a hill tribe village and meet the Hmong tribe close up with their colourful outfits and a special way of life.

Fly the next day to the south of Thailand to the beach resort of Phuket, your home for the next three nights. Phuket is blessed with magnificent coves and bays, powdery white beaches, hospitable people and lushly forested mountains – everything necessary for a memorable, relaxing stay. The next morning, you will enjoy a boat ride to PhiPhi Island where the movie “The Beach” was filmed. You are free to explore the charms and serene beauty of the island. Later, you will have the opportunity to travel on a small boat to a secluded beach to swim, snorkel or just relax. After lunch here, enjoy free time before it’s time to travel back to Phuket.

The following day is totally at leisure to explore, swim, relax or go shopping as you wish.

Weddings

A great place for weddings, the staff craft traditional Fijian attire of hand-painted tree bark for the couple. They announce the bride’s sunset arrival on a raft, as a conch shell is sounded, all the while a local Fijian choir is in full swing. Guests don floral garlands around their necks.

10 Classic South East Asia

Standing out among Asia tours, this is the ideal itinerary for the independent traveler wanting a taste of the region. Start in exotic Bangkok, go on to vibrant Singapore, then enchanting Bali, finally ending in bustling Hong Kong.

It is called classic because it encompasses the perfect itinerary for anyone who, on a customized independent basis, wants to see as much as possible in a limited amount of time and also wants to make sure they visit the key Asia destinations. Here you combine Bangkok, Singapore, Bali and Hong Kong.

Your stay begins with a visit to the renowned Grand Palace, the former residence of Thai kings. In this complex, you will be able to relive the splendour and pageantry of the past. A highlight will be the impressive Emerald Buddha. After this, continue to Wat Po, one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok where the large Reclining Buddha is housed. In the evening, you will have an enjoyable cruise on the Chao Phraya River which traverses the city with spectacular sights to be experienced on both banks including the Temple of Dawn, the Grand Palace and many other interesting landmarks. During the cruise, Thai delicacies will be served.

Depart from Bangkok and fly to Singapore. Singapore is certainly a small country with a population of only 4 million but there are a large number of reasons to spend time here. It is very much a modern garden destination in many respects with its downtown skyscrapers and 50 parks and 4 nature reserves. But it also retains its old colourful districts which are influenced by the ethnic mix that exists here. Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures stand side by side and can also be seen individually in neighbourhoods such as Chinatown and Little India.

The attractive Singapore River dissects the city and one enjoyable experience is to stroll along its banks through Boat Quay and Clark Quay where one can eat, drink and take in the local neighbourhoods. Apart from the ethnicity of Singapore, another major attraction is the amazing shopping much of which is centered on Orchard Road but also in the many night markets. For the culturally inclined, there are art galleries, museums and a very contemporary performing arts centre.

Start your exploration of Singapore by visiting the downtown commercial core travelling by the Padang Cricket Club, Parliament House, the Supreme Court and City Hall. Then it’s on to MountFaber where you will have a wonderful panoramic view of the city and Sentosa Island. Next, enjoy the serene National Orchid Garden which is also known as the Botanical Gardens. Then comes Little India with its large Indian community, one of the most colourful and attractive neighbourhoods. The afternoon is free as is the evening.

Why not head to the sights and sounds of Boat Quay along the banks of the SingaporeRiver with its bright lights, lively nightlife and many eating establishments or stop at the famous Raffles Hotel and head to the Long Bar for, naturally, a Singapore Sling.

Fly next to Bali, an island located 3.2 kilometres/2 miles east of Java and the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia. One interesting fact is that the local religion is predominantly Hindu differing from the rest of Indonesia. This accounts for much of the culture and tradition here. The terrain in Bali is made up of mountains, rugged coastlines, rice terraces, volcanic hillsides and of course excellent beaches.  It is known for its festivals, traditional dancing, handicrafts and paintings as well as its Batik industry. You are totally free to enjoy the beach or explore the island as you wish.

Known as “the City of Life” as it never seems to sleep, Hong Kong is a vibrant and exciting city made up of the Mainland and Hong KongIsland with the famous Star Ferry linking the two. It boasts an expansive skyline and a deep natural harbour. One can enjoy so much here including fantastic shopping either in the stores or at the street markets which abound, cruise around the harbour and also enjoy the Symphony of Lights, a spectacular evening light show beamed across the harbour and reflected onto the buildings.

Your morning tour of Hong Kong includes Stanley Market on the far side of Hong KongIsland, a maze of alleyways with a multitude of stalls selling everything under the sun with excellent bargains in clothing, watches, electronics and much more. Then continue to Aberdeen, also on the Island, a floating collection of restaurants all reached by boat and a fun place to have a meal. Next is VictoriaPeak, which offers spectacular, panoramic views of the harbour and of the mainland. The breathtaking beauty of Hong Kong can never be forgotten from this vantage point. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Independent exploration and touring in Hong Kong is endless in its possibilities. Perhaps take the ferry to Macau for the day or the island of Lantau with its serene beauty or simply stroll around the neighbourhoods of Kowloon or Wanchai. Also consider the museums or take in a concert one evening.

Live Like A Local: Sunshine Coast Australia

Just a short drive north of Brisbane is the town of Caloundra, the southern gateway to Australia’s famed Sunshine Coast. Caloundra stretches across 1100 square kilometres from the mountains to the sea. A spectacular seaside resort town that revels in the Australian sun. With 5 excellent surf beaches, 2 calm water beaches, lovely parks and picnic spots, it is a haven for seaside activities such as swimming, sun-tanning, surfing, beachside BBQ’s and long coastal walks.

Caloundra also boasts a unique 24 nautical mile-long estuary for boating, fishing and observing wild life. Restaurants abound in the town catering to all tastes from “fare-dinkum Aussie food such as meat pies and chips to tasty Thai, Mexican, Greek and, of course, seafood.

The Caloundra Experience

The Caloundra experience does not end at the foreshore. Look further afield and you will find a hinterland of stunning diversity and beauty, a hinterland that offers something for everyone….from the sightseer to the thrill seeker.

Within half an hour’s drive of the beach, the landscape varies from tropical fruit plantations to lush rainforest. The Glass House Mountains provide an impressive centrepiece, standing like silent sentinels above the surrounding patchwork of fields and forests. Steeped in history, the mountains carry Aboriginal names but were collectively named by explorer Captain Cook in 1770. The Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive puts you almost within touching distance, while a drive to the top of the nearby Blackall Range provides a breathtaking panorama. The best vantage point is Mary Cairncross Park.

Close by is Howells Knob, one of the highest spots on the Blackall Range, where you can appreciate the scenic grandeur of the Sunshine Coast.

Further west lies the peaceful Conondale Valley, home of the Mary River headwaters and the Little Yabba Creek picnic area, where visitors can relax beside the sparkling waters to the sound of birdsong.

No visit to Caloundra City would be complete without a tour of the hinterland townships, each of which offers much to see and do. You can while away the hours in the many arts and crafts shops, tuck into a Devonshire tea or purchase farm-fresh produce from a roadside stall….the choice is yours. There is also a host of more energetic pursuits to choose from including bushwalking, rock climbing and horse riding.

Hinterland Hospitality

The beauty and lifestyle of Caloundra’s Hinterland has enticed a host of talented chefs to present their art form in a diverse range of eating options – from ‘best restaurant’ standard to melt-in-the-mouth devonshire teas in treetop settings. From coffee and patisseries, to ice cream and handmade sweets.

Long before the boutiques and potteries arrived, European settlers had found the rich volcanic soils perfect for farming and today there are dairy farms and macadamia, avocado, strawberry and pineapple plantations spread over a wide area of the range and lower slopes.

In the season, you can buy fresh produce straight from the farm gate. And Caloundra’s Hinterland hospitality offers so much more. Guided walks and tours. The impressive Maleny Scarecrow Carnival during September, arts and crafts markets, (Maleny on Sundays, Beerwah and Conondale on the first Saturday of each month), to name just a tiny few.

10 Awesome Travel Apps For Your Next Trip

10 Awesome Travel Apps For Your Next Trip

Part of the fun of travel is learning the sights and sounds of a new place. What if there was a tool that made travel easier, wouldn’t you use it? Having the right apps on your phone can make life on the road a little easier. Here are some awesome travel apps that you may want to download before your next adventure.

1   Pack Point

business packing suit

A packing checklist is a useful tool, what if someone could make that list for you?

All you do is input your destination and travel dates, and PackPoint will create a weather-specific packing list. The app will aks what you plan on doing while you’re there, and will make suggestions based on your answers — so you don’t forget your sneakers if you plan on working out or a business suit if you plan on going to some meetings.

2   WiFi Map

google map tablet

You don’t want to use roaming cell phone data to find a wifi hotspot, that can end up being costly. Use the crowdsourced WiFi Map app highlights hotspots around your current location and provides you with the password to use them.

Make sure to be careful what data you access when you’re connected to public WiFi.

You can also download maps to use offline (so you don’t burn through data looking for that hotspot), and a premium version of the app offers access to a bigger library of locations.

3   Google Translate

This is invaluable when traveling to a different country with a different language.

It can translate 103 different languages, just by typing the text into your phone.

Of those, 59 can be downloaded for access even when you don’t have a data connection, and 38 can be translated by pointing your phone’s camera at a street sign or dinner menu.

4    TravelBank

money-cash-caluclator

TravelBank bundles the budgets together, meaning you can fly coach instead of business and eat at nicer restaurants, or take the subway rather than cabs and stay at a nicer hotel.

At the end of the trip, you file an expense report through the app.

If you don’t spend all of your budget you split the savings with your and get a gift card for somewhere like Uber or Airbnb for the remaining funds.

5   Dayuse.com

The Dayuse app allows you to book hotel rooms for the day rather than the evening hours so you can relax, take a shower, or just get some work done.

Rooms are often cheaper than they are at night, and your stay often comes with access to all the same amenities enjoyed by overnight guests.

6   AccuWeather

sun

A great weather app is invaluable. Planning an outdoor adventure or what to wear? This is a great app to help you plan ahead.

AccuWeather is available in more than 100 different languages and provides minute-by-minute forecasts that are hyper-localized.

7   Viber

talk telephone women

Viber allows you to make phone calls using an internet or wifi connection to make calls to other users. Have your friends or family download this app so you can call them for free. You can also call numbers outside of the Viber user network for a fee. You can also send text messages.

8   Uber

blue-car-icon

Maybe you haven’t used Uber at home but it can come in handy when you are traveling.

Uber is currently in more countries than many other similar transportation services.

In places where you don’t speak the language, the app’s ability to type in your address can help cut down on any confusion between you and your driver.

9   SitOrSquat

The name  might sound silly but The SitOrSquat app is loaded with more than 100,000 public restrooms and can pinpoint the nearest to your location. Bathrooms come with a rating — “Sit” if it is clean, or “Squat” if it’s not.

Users can rate toilets and add new ones to the database, and all locations can be searched by location, rating, whether or not they have a changing table, or whether or not they’re free to use.

10  Citymapper

city train bus

This app is great for most major cities and helps you get around in a large city.

It offers transit maps with real-time departure information as well as disruption alerts and biking and walking directions.

City mapper will also make suggestions on the best train car to be in, as well as what station exit you should take when you arrive at your stop.

First Timer’s Guide to Australia

First Timer’s Guide to Australia

If you’ve never visited Australia before, the cost of getting here and how long it takes are two of the most commonly asked questions. Here is everything you need to know when it comes to travel and transport within Australia!

Check out our most popular vacations that include both Australia & New Zealand!

Travel time to and from Australia

The length of time it takes to travel to and from Australia varies, depending on where you’re visiting from. A  non stop flight from the United States to Melbourne takes around 14 hours. It takes between 3 and 4 hours to travel to Australia from New Zealand, 22 hours from London and 18 hours from Canada.

Cost to fly to Australia

the cost of flying to Australia varies, depending on where you’re going. Prices can start from anywhere from $999 when you get a good special and can go up from there. Like the rest of the world, the cost of traveling to Australia will vary based on the time of year and where you’re flying from. Be sure to book as early as possible, for a better chance of scoring a great deal.

Contact a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 for more information or to find flight prices

Australia is a huge country

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, and is almost as big as the United States. Twenty percent of Australia’s land mass is desert Outback, so embarking on an epic Australian road trip is a big task. Prepare to see tons of red sand, and a whole lot of nothing during your travels.

Australia’s public transport system

In most states across Australia, public transport anything to brag about. You’re much better off catching an Uber or Taxi to get to where you need to be. Uber is relatively well priced in Australia. Major cities tend to be a little more pricey, but generally speaking, this is the best form of transport.

If you’re going to be spending an extended period of time in Australia, consider hiring a car. You will have a lot more freedom, not to mention awesome convenience when it comes to luggage. There are tons of car hire companies in Australia.

An Australian road-trip is the best way to see the country

8 Day Melbourne melbourne great ocean road

Australia is one of the best countries in the world for a road-trip. You will see far more than you would traveling by air, and have the freedom to travel and explore at your own pace. Heading off the beaten track and discovering some of Australia’s hidden gems, is all part of the fun on an Australian road-trip. Hiring a camper van is definitely the best way to explore as much of Australia as possible.

Flying Domestically is Perfect for Fast-Paced Travel

If you are short on time and money, flying domestically within Australia is the best option. There are always awesome deals on Australian domestic flights, especially if you book ahead. If you’re not keen on braving the Australian Outback, flying from state to state is the way to go. Most flights are under 4 hours, with the exception of West Coast to East Coast flights, which can be close to 6 hours.

Seasons are Opposite to the Northern Hemisphere

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, keep in mind that seasons are different. Summer in Australia is from December until February, autumn is from March until May, winter is from June until August and spring if from September until November.

The Northern Territory is Always going to be Hotter

If you’re planning a summer trip to Australia, keep in mind that the temperature is going to be higher in the Northern Territory, all year round. Expect highs of over forty degrees celsius in summer, and late twenties to mid thirties for the rest of the year.

Travel During Off-peak times for Less Crowds

Sydney, Melbourne & Fiji bondi beach sydney australia goway

Summer is the busiest time to visit Australia. Everyone loves the idea of relaxing on our beautiful beaches, soaking in the sunshine. If you’re hoping for a more relaxing, quieter Australian adventure, book your visit between April and August.

If you are hoping to experience some of Australia’s summer activities, then November through to February are going to be the hottest months in the year. Just keep in mind that it will be quite a bit busier, and there will be a lot more people around, especially at the popular tourist attractions and theme parks across Australia.

Money, Prices & Currency

sollar-money

Visitors to Australia seem to have a lot of questions when it comes to the cost of everyday items in Australia. So much so that I’ve actually published an entire post, dedicated to the cost of traveling to Australia. Here is a brief recap of the most important tips when it comes to money, costs and currency in Australia.

Australia is Expensive

Australia can be an expensive country to visit..

Food can be fairly cheap if you shop at the big brand supermarkets, Coles or Woolworths. Stick to their home brand products, and you can definitely survive on a budget.

Alcohol and cigarettes are the biggest expense, with a carton of beer costing upwards of $70 (Australian dollars) and a bottle of spirits starting at $30.

Australia can be done on a Budget

It is possible to travel in Australia on a budget. Keep an eye out for cheap flights and package deals with hotels, and fly during off-peak season. For the almost cheapest alcohol, head to a big liquor chain like First Choice or Dan Murphy’s for great weekly deals. If you’re doing an Australian road-trip, buy essentials items such as water and snacks in bulk at Coles or Woolworths, so you don’t need to keep re-purchasing them every day or two.

The Currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar

The currency used in Australia is the Australian Dollar. Keep an eye on the exchange rate, and if you have a trip already booked, exchange some cash each time the Dollar is decent. This is the best way ensure you’re getting good value for money, and aren’t losing too much in the conversion.

Tipping Isn’t Required in Australia

Tipping isn’t required in Australia. We don’t need to tip for any service, whether that’s in a restaurant, a Taxi or Uber driver or a hotel employee. The hourly rate in most companies and businesses is very decent, therefore tipping isn’t required.

Australia’s Liquor Laws are very Strict

wine

The legal drinking age in Australia is 18 years old. In all states around Australia, you’ll be asked for ID if you look under 25 years old. In New South Wales, you’ll be asked for ID if you look under 40 years old. If you don’t have the acceptable form of ID, you will not be served.

An acceptable international form of ID can be a Passport or international drivers license (Northern Territory, New South Wales and Queensland only).

Australia has a Wide Range of Food Options

Australia is great for a wide range of cuisines and food choices. Whether you’re a picky eater, meat lover, seafood fan or vegan, there’s something for everyone. Most of the major cities have a seemingly endless amount of international cuisines.

Queensland is Perfect for Theme Park Fans

The Gold Coast in Queensland is home to most of Australia’s major theme parks. It’s basically a thrill seeker’s heaven, and should definitely be included on your itinerary. There are five large theme parks on the Gold Coast: Movie World, Dreamworld, WetnWild, White Water World and Sea World.

Wine Tasting in South Australia

DUA travel image

South Australia is home to some of the best wineries in Australia.  Spend a day exploring the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills or Clare Valley, and enjoy a few delicious glasses of wine!

Australia has some of the world’s best beaches

bondi sydney qantas

The entire country is surrounded by water. That means, no matter which major capital city you visit, you are always going to be super close to the beach. From Bondi Beach in Sydney, to the almost endless amount of beautiful beaches up and down the coast of Queensland, there’s no shortage of incredible Australian coastline to admire.

Interesting Valentine’s Day Facts & Traditions Around The World

Interesting Valentine’s Day Facts & Traditions Around The World

valentines-day-text2

Do you know the origins of Valentine’s day? We think of it as a time to celebrate romance, but the origins of this might surprise you. We do this in the name of St. Valentine, but who was he and why do people celebrate this day? Read on for fun facts about Valentine’s day and how others around the world celebrate this day….

The Legend of St. Valentine

cupid

The most popular theory about Valentine’s Day’s origin is that Emperor Claudius II didn’t want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail he wrote a note to the jailor’s daugter signing it “from your Valentine”.

During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance.

Here are a few interesting fun facts and traditions about Valentine’s day around the world

Ever receive an anonymous valentine?

In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card.

Greeting Card Heaven

About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year. This makes it the second largest seasonal card sending time of the year

Finland

In Finland, Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates into “Friend’s day”. It’s more about remembering your buddies than your loved ones.

XXOXOX ‘I Love  You’

Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn’t write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity.

Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve

red heart

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.”

Chocolate cures the blues

woman_chocolate_cake

Physicians of the 1800’s commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love.

Why are Roses Red?

flower-chocolates red rose

The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.

In the Philippines, during this week, thousands celebrate the season of love by getting married. These ‘mass weddings’ involve hundreds of couples making their vows at the same time.

Japan: Chocolates and White Day

japan-kyoto-travelteam

Ladies take note: On Valentine’s Day in Japan, Western traditions are flipped as the women are the ones expected to do the big spending. As Feb. 14 approaches, women flock to chocolate stores to get gifts for their male dates, friends, coworkers and bosses,

Denmark: Snowdrops & Gaekkebrev

denmark-copenhagen-travelteam

The Danish have put their own twist on the American celebration of love. Instead of giving their loved ones roses, the people of Denmark give friends and admirers pressed white flowers called snowdrops, along with traditional Valentine’s cards.

Danish men also give their sweethearts gaekkebrev. These anonymous letters written on an intricately cut piece of paper feature a funny poem or rhyme.

Ghana: Chocolate Day

In 2007, Ghana’s tourism ministry re-branded Valentine’s Day in the hopes of promoting and celebrating Ghana’s contribution to the chocolate industry as one of the largest cocoa exporters in the world. Thanks to those efforts, Feb. 14 is officially the best day of the year, a.k.a. “National Chocolate Day.”

Estonia: Friend’s Day

Being single on Valentine’s Day in Estonia can actually be cause for celebration. On Feb. 14, Estonians celebrate Sõbrapäev or “Friend’s Day” in an effort to include everyone — single or otherwise — in happy festivities. Non-romantic relationships are honored as friends and family members exchange gifts and celebrate fraternal love.

Italy

Originally, Italians celebrated Valentine’s Day as the Spring Festival. The young and amorous gathered outside in gardens and such to enjoy poetry and music, then take a stroll with their beloved.

Another Italian Valentine’s Day tradition was for young, unmarried girls to wake up before dawn to spot their future husbands. The belief was that the first man a woman saw on Valentine’s Day was the man she would marry within a year.

Today, Italians celebrate Valentine’s Day with gift exchanges between lovers and romantic dinners. One of the most popular Valentine’s Day gifts in Italy is Baci Perugina, which are small, chocolate-covered hazelnuts wrapped with a romantic quote printed in four languages.

Now that you have learned a bit of history and trivia, now is the perfect time to start planning your dream vacation!

One of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations and a thriving port city, the Bay continues to offer its bounty of beaches, culture and lifestyle to visitors from near and far.

The region is blessed with a mild climate year-round. The vast harbour, islands and proximity to the open sea ensure that seafood is a local specialty. The region’s legendary beaches swimmers, surfers and kayakers year round and accommodations  make the most of the great coastal views.

There are plenty of things to do in the Bay of Plenty. Choose from water adventures like white-water rafting, kayaking, dolphin encounters, parasailing and jetboating. There’s also skydiving, scenic flights, horse treks, cultural experiences, golf courses and a variety of gardens and museums to peruse.

Whether you’re after relaxation, beach life or a bit of indulgence, the Bay of Plenty has all the bases covered

MT MAUNGANUI

The suburb of Mount Maunganui has been well-regarded for years for its top beaches and coastal lifestyle.

Many New Zealanders own holiday homes at “The Mount” as it is known. The beaches are numerous and safe for swimmers and surfers. The top spot for swimming is Main Beach, which is located at the foot of the mighty Mauao (Mount Maunganui) and faces the Pacific Ocean. On the opposite side of Mauao is the harbourside Pilot Bay, which is a launching pad for boats and kayaks. It’s also a shallow swimming spot ideal for families.

Mauao is the physical focal point of the coastal Bay of Plenty – a sacred place that dominates the landscape of the Tauranga area.  Walking up and around Mauao is a must-do activity in the region.

Across from the Main Beach is a number of cafés to enjoy a meal or coffee while taking in the ambience of the area. Maunganui Road in the downtown Mount Maunganui area is also popular with boutique shopping and top restaurants and cafés.

Best of Both Islands Self Drive

Get to know Auckland before heading to Rotorua then Queenstown. From Queenstown travel to the Glacier Region and Christchurch truly uncovering the best that both islands have to offer.

Perfect for those who want flexibility but have limited time, this self-drive tour combines the highlights of North and South to create a swift, yet satisfying 10 day journey.

Quality-of-life polls routinely rank Auckland within the world’s top 10, and it’s easy to see why. New Zealand’s largest city seduces visitors with its laid back pace, world class museums, galleries and gardens. Enjoy panoramic views from Mt Eden, or a walk around historic Parnell Village. Drive on to Rotorua, a spectacular geothermal laboratory of steaming geysers and bubbling mud pools. This is also a place of great spiritual significance to the Maori, with plenty of cultural experiences on offer.

Board your flight to Queenstown to continue your adventure on the South Island. The adrenaline capital of New Zealand, Queenstown offers a wealth of activities to suit any style of traveller. A ride on the famous Shotover jetboat is a local favourite, but no visit here is complete without a trip to Milford Sound. A 16km fjord carved by glacial ice, this is New Zealand’s most spectacular attraction and is best seen via a cruise along its length. A journey up the rugged West Coast takes you to Glacier country, with sights such as Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier, said to be the tears of a Maori princess, pining for her lost love. A final drive through the spectacular Southern Alps takes you to historic Christchurch, with time for sight-seeing before you depart.

Guide to the Islands of the South Pacific

Guide to the Islands of the South Pacific

The South Pacific is vast, stretching over 11 million miles from the top of Australia to the Hawaiian Islands. Filled with thousands of islands, some islands like Tahiti and Fiji are well known, while others are not so much known. Some islands are linked by non-stop flights from Los Angeles and some are only reachable by other connections. These islands are divided into three regions: Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia, each with its own cultural traditions, language variations, and culinary specialties. Read on for your crash course guide to the islands of the South Pacific.

Polynesia

This easternmost South Pacific region, which includes Hawaii, counts idyllic Tahiti and mysterious Easter Island among its treasures. Its ocean-going settlers, originally from Southeast Asia, are renowned for their navigation, having survived arduous journeys in dugout canoes as early as 1500 B.C.

French Polynesia (Tahiti)

Made up of 118 islands, the most well known is Bora Bora, Tahiti is an independent nation with ties to France. With well- developed tourism on a dozen islands, Tahiti has been luring travelers for five decades with overwater bungalows, French-influenced cuisine, and exotic culture. Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, surfing and more on this island.

The Cook Islands

Cook Islands cook-islands-go-away-travel

These islands are lesser-known than neighboring Tahiti, these 15 islands are named for English explorer Captain James Cook and run as a self-governing nation with ties to New Zealand, are home to 19,000 people renowned for their drumming and dancing. Tourists generally visit the main island of Rarotonga and small lagoon-caressed Aitutaki. Try snorkeling and diving; also a great place for destination weddings!

Samoa

samoa-travelteam

This group of nine islands was the first in the Pacific to gain independence from western occupation. Upolu is the main island and tourism hub, but life here is still governed by Fa’a Samoa (The Samoan Way), where family and elders are respected and its 362 villages are presided over by 18,000 matai (chiefs). Visit the jungles, waterfalls, try a hike, and go swimming!

American Samoa

Marketed as “Where America’s sunsets,” this U.S. territory, with its singsong capital Pago Pago (on main island Tutuila), consists of five volcanic islands totaling just 76 square miles and a population of 65,000. Its tropical rainforests and marine sanctuaries are superb.

Tonga

This island kingdom straddles the western side of the International Dateline (Tongans are first to greet the new day) and consists of 176 islands, 52 inhabited. The present king, His Majesty King George Tupou V, has ruled his nation’s 102,000 people since 2006, residing in the capital, Nuku’alofa, on the main island Tongatapu. Explore deserted islands and sand spits, drop anchor along the way and explore some amazing coral reefs.

Easter Island (Rapa Nui)

Easter Island was settled by the Polynesians about 1,500 years ago and discovered by the Dutch (on Easter Sunday in 1722, hence the name), this remote 63-square-mile island is home to about 5,000 people and 800 moai, giant stone statues. Owned by Chile, the island offers rugged beauty and a blend of cultures.

Melanesia

These islands, located west of Polynesia and south of Micronesia – among them Fiji and Papua New Guinea – are known for their many ceremonial rituals and customs, elaborate body tattoos and wood-carving techniques.

Fiji

mariott fiji momi

Consisting of 333 islands, this welcoming nation of about 85,000 people – all of whom love to shout their exuberant greeting, “Bula!” every chance they get – is known for its luxurious private-island resorts and superb diving. The main island, Viti Levu, home to the international airport at Nadi, is the hub from which tourists fan out to Vanua Levu and resorts in the pristine Yasawa and Mamanuca islands. Catch a ferry, go swimming or snorkeling in Fiji!

Vanuatu

This republic is three hours by air from Australia. It has about 221,000 people . Its 83 islands are mostly mountainous and are home to several active volcanoes. Vanuatans speak 113 languages, but all celebrate life with a series of rituals and events, making it a fascinating spot to visit. The capital is Port Vila on Efate island.

Papua New Guinea

Wedged between Australia and Southeast Asia, this is a must-see for adventurers. Covering 182,700 square miles (the eastern half of New Guinea Island and 600 other islands) and home to 5.5 million people (who speak 800 languages – although English is official), it is a prime spot for bird watching and expedition trekking. The capital is Port Moresby.

Micronesia

This northernmost sub-region is comprised of thousands of small (hence the term micro) islands. Best known is the U.S. territory of Guam, but other isles such as Palau and Yap have hidden pleasures (such as incredible dive sites) and eccentric oddities (such as giant stones used as currency).

Guam

This 212-square-mile island (Micronesia’s largest with 175,000 people) may be a U.S. territory, but its unique Chamorro culture and language is a blend of 300 years of Spanish, Micronesian, Asian and western influences. As Continental Airlines’ South Pacific hub, Guam has excellent airlift and is the region’s melting pot.

Palau

Well-known to divers, who claim its waters are some of the planet’s best, this 190-square-mile republic (made up of 340 islands, nine of them inhabited) was featured a few years ago on “Survivor.” Independent since 1994 and home to 20,000 sociable people (two-thirds of whom live in and around the capital Koror), Palau also offers stunning forests, waterfalls, and amazing beaches.

Yap

One of four Federated States of Micronesia, Yap is steeped in ancient traditions – most notably its stone money discs and its raucous dancing. Its 11,200 people are shy but welcoming and its diving is excellent (giant manta rays are abundant).
