7 Things To Know Before You Travel To Australia

7 Things To Know Before You Travel To Australia

Australia is a mecca for travelers for many reasons. There are lush rainforests in the north, the remarkable Outback, and the Great Barrier Reef are all iconic destinations. Here are some things to take into consideration before planning a trip that will help keep you safe and maximize your experience down under.

1. Australia’s Landscapes are Very Diverse

exploring australia colette uluru rock -04_cvo_8952_480x340
Australia is the 6th largest country in the world. It spans multiple climactic zones and the seasons are reversed than in the United States. Rainfall differs from the tropical north to the temperate south, while temperatures at one end of the country are often very different from the other. In the red center of Australia, the temperature can fluctuate 80°F in one day, so pack for all conditions if you’re visiting Uluru (Ayers Rock). The area surrounding the Great Barrier Reef experiences two seasons, the wet season and dry season. The summers are hot and humid and the winters are dry and warm.

2. The Sun is Extremely Powerful

Another important factor to consider, especially for travelers coming from more temperate regions, is the sun. There are several holes in the ozone layer above Australia, and the UV index can routinely reach dangerous levels. Always carry sunscreen, preferably with an SPF rating of 60 or above, and do your best to stay out of direct sunlight, especially during the middle of the day. Know the limitations of your body and drink enough fluids. If you start to feel dizzy or lightheaded, find shade immediately and rehydrate.

3. Biosecurity Regulations are Strict

bannedddd

Australia has one of the strictest bio-security regulations in the world regarding the transport of biological entities. This includes food, plant material, and animal products, and failure to declare them can lead to a hefty fine. Australia has been threatened by invasive species before, so if you are unsure about something, always declare it at customs – or leave it at home or on the plane.

4. United States Citizens Must Apply for a Electronic Travel Authority Before Entering Australia

laptop-planning-travel-tips-computer-planning-group

Important: United States citizens are required to apply for a Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which provides authorization to enter Australia and is electronically linked to your passport. The ETA grants permission to visit Australia unlimited times in a 12 month period for up to three months at a time. There is a AUD$20 service fee. Before purchasing your plane ticket, make sure that you are eligible for an ETA. Your travel team agent can help you with this, call 1-800-788-0829 for more information.

5. Don’t Worry Too Much About The Wildlife But Still Be Cautious

australia-kangaroo1-traveltema-600x273

Australia is known for its dangerous wildlife, and yes, often the danger is embellished, but some of the more venomous creatures on earth can be found here. Avoid driving at night out of towns and cities to avoid hitting kangaroos, wallabies, and other wildlife. “Stinger Season” is in the summer in Queensland when jellyfish can be seen on the beaches. During this time, it is necessary to wear a stinger suit or only swim in beaches with stinger nets. Always obey the wildlife warning signs.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

6. Tipping is Discretionary

handing-over-moneyWEB

Some Australians suggest tipping and some advise to never tip under any circumstances. If you are going to tip at a restaurant, around 10 percent is sufficient and only tip to reward good service. At restaurants, the bill is always settled in the front of the restaurant, unlike in the United States where the bill is brought to the table. So when you finish, get up and pay at the front. Your tour guides do not expect a tip, but it’s always appreciative. If you think your tour guide deserves a tip, a few dollars tip will suffice.

7. You May Be Confused by the Aussie Slang

talk telephone women

Aussie’s have unique slang and the speed that the Aussies speak. A few key common phrases to know: Macca’s (McDonald’s), Thongs (flip-flops), Sunnies (sunglasses), Cuppa (A hot beverage), Good on ya (Great job), Heaps (A lot), Bottle-O (liquor store), and Mozzie (mosquito). In restaurants, what we call “Appetizers” in the United States are called “Entrées” in Australia ; while “Entrées” are called “Mains”.

10 Things To Know Before Your First European River Cruise

10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR FIRST EUROPEAN RIVER CRUISE

It’s easy to understand why River cruising is becoming so popular. Unpack your bags just once and enjoy the changing scenery from your stateroom balcony as you sail through multiple countries and charming European towns. Some things you may not know about river cruising…

They’re not just for baby boomers

misc-family-travelteam

While river cruising is still quite popular with travelers of a certain age, the market is opening to younger couples and families. Adventures by Disney teamed up with AmaWaterways to sail the Danube River, with the Rhine aboard custom-designed ships featuring connecting staterooms and suites that accommodate up to four passengers each. Disney guides lead so-called Junior Adventurers on special excursions and host a kids-only dinner in the ship’s lounge nightly, so you may even forget they’re on the ship at times.

Call a Travel Team Agent today at 1-800-788-0829 for more information or to book your river cruise!

Overpacking is bad, but being under-prepared is worse

businesswoman walking with luggage

It’s important to pack smart for a river cruise. That said, you will need to be prepared for a variety of situations—everything from strenuous hiking to dinner at the ship’s chef’s table to getting caught in the rain in Salzburg. Take advantage of your ship’s laundry service as a way to cut back on what you bring. It’s worth repeating an outfit or two if that leaves precious room in your luggage for souvenirs.

You will break a sweat

 jogging workout excercise

You can go ahead and indulge because you’re averaging 20,000 steps a day. Popular shore excursions in Austria’s Wachau Valley include climbing to the ruins on Dürnstein Castle (1,023 feet straight up) and a 22-mile bike ride between the riverside towns of Melk and Krems. But if you feel like that’s not enough, you can always power-walk a few laps on the sun deck or sneak a workout in the exercise room before dinner.

It’s a good way to visit Europe for the first time

croisi europe river seine paris

With a day in each port, river cruising provides a “best of” when it comes to all the sights and experiences the region has to offer, with your own semi-private guide. If you take advantage of all the excursions your cruise provides, you’ll be kept busy from just after breakfast until dinner—and still feel like there’s so much more to see.

Call a Travel Team Agent today at 1-800-788-0829 for more information or to book your river cruise!

Free time is priceless

Remember that everything on your daily itinerary is optional. (Except for the port departure time). Discover on the first day that you absolutely despise guided walking tours? Take the charter bus with your group and then tour on your own. Hear great things about a local restaurant, but your dinner is scheduled on the ship for that night? Ask the front desk to help you book a reservation and a cab.

Take advantage of daytime sailing

While ocean cruises often include a day at sea, this is much less common on the river, where you sail through the night and wake up in a new city. If daytime sailing is on the itinerary, consider skipping that afternoon’s excursion (or at least, coming back early) and spending your time relaxing on the sun deck. Some of the best views of the countryside are from the water.

Read the fine print

laptop planning travel tips computer woman plan travel trip

While river cruises typically don’t involve many final statement surprises as their ocean counterparts, some require additional payment for shore excursions, tips, and onboard amenities. Lines like Disney and Tauck are truly all inclusive, others like Viking and Avalon charge for excursions beyond a guided walking tour of that day’s port city, so if you want to tour Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace or take in an evening Mozart concert, you’ll have to pay up. Good news: Wi-Fi is almost always included, as well as unlimited local beer and wine with meals.

Expect personalized service

chef

Being aboard a river vessel with less than 200 other passengers is much different experience than on a typical cruise ship. The crew, from the wait staff to the front desk, will quickly learn your name and how you take your coffee, and most likely will surpass your expectations.

Call a Travel Team Agent today at 1-800-788-0829 for more information or to book your river cruise!

Take advantage of the ship’s crew and local guides

Your best resources in a new city are the locals, and they may be the faces you see on your ship every day. Get to know the staff and ask for their recommendations for places to explore (and eat!) in your free time. Their insights will save you time and help you see the best of each destination.

You may not be ready to leave

Why would you want to when you wake up to a different scenic landscape every day for a week. Extend that warm feeling by bringing a piece of each city home with you. One such way: The streets of Central Europe are rife with local artists, and you’ll be able to amass an impressive collection to hang on the wall when you get home.

10 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Ask For on a Plane

10 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Ask For on a Plane

You may not be aware of everything you can ask for on a plane. Every plane has different amenities and what you’re offered may depend on how long your flight is. Not all airlines will offer these things, but some do and if you ask nicely, you just might be surprised. Next time you fly, you can totally ask for these things…

1   Medicine

medicine symbol

Maybe you drank a little too much the night before and have a hangover, or you hit you’re your elbow on something. Whatever the case, most planes come equipped with a first aid kit. Even if you don’t want to admit to the flight attendant that your head is pounding because of one-too-many vodka sodas… especially if you’re ordering a side of bloody mary to get through the pain.

Call a Travel Team Agent at  1-800-788-0829 for more information or to plan your next trip.

2   A second Meal

food

An airline’s ability to offer you another meal is dependent on various factors, including if it’s an economy carrier and how many hungry passengers are on board. Many airlines will also let you have another snack if you ask politely for it. Most aircrafts have more than enough extras. So the lesson? It never hurts to ask,

3 Help with your kiddos

babies_chef_food

Traveling with your infants or kids can be stressful. Most airlines may offer coloring pages, maybe tot-friendly meals and some sirlines go even further. Gulf Air and Etihad are among the carriers that sometimes have trained nannies, too. If you’re taking a longer flight, say to the Middle East, Emirates has a “Fly With Me Monsters” gift for kids that includes blankets, a backpack and a magazine full of puzzles, coloring pages, and cartoons.

4  A doctor

Doctor image

Sometimes emergencies happen when you’re miles above ground and you need assistance, fast. If you’ve ever wondered how someone would come to your side, rest assured that all cabin crews are trained to call for a doctor in urgent matters. From a heart attack to a seizure, there is likely at least one health professional on your flight who can lend their expertise.

Call a Travel Team Agent at  1-800-788-0829 for more information or to plan your next trip.

5  Sanitizing wipes

woman cleaning

While cleaning crews are always deployed to do a fast sweep, you might still have a little OCD when you set in your seat and notice a sticky armrest.  Ask your flight attendant for sanitizing wipes. Most airlines carry them and it never helps to be extra-clean. Especially because the dirtiest places on airplanes may not even be the most obvious ones.

6  Water bottle refill

water bottle pic

If you bring your own water bottle, most flight attendants will fill (or at least partially fill) your own container for you with water. Since flying will dry out your skin and can leave you feeling dehydrated, extra H2O is never a bad idea.

7   A will

paper spiral notebook

We hope you never need this, but in case something happens, rest assured that  your pilot can be your last will-and-testament. As you prepare to croak, whatever you say to the pilot can actually serve as your dying words and can stand up in court.

8  A birthday cake

birthday cake

Some airlines let you preorder a birthday cake. Two airlines currently offer this amenity — Emirates and Singapore Air — but you only need to notify them at least 24 hours in advance to make it happen. Best birthday ever?

Call a Travel Team Agent at  1-800-788-0829 for more information or to plan your next trip.

9  Wine tasting

wine

While this perk is rnot offered in economy class, if you can afford to sit in business or first class, it’s pretty cool to ask for: a wine tasting! Sommeliers onboard Singapore Airlines can do a wine tasting with you to find the best fit for your palette and on your meal choice. Talk about flying high class.

10  Bloody Marys

What better way to have brunch (or really, any meal) than with a free cocktail? Believe it or not, British Airways doesn’t just offer the typical freebies for their guests, the carrier also adds in a few alcoholic additions, too. When boarding a longer flight, you’ll be given headphones, a dental kit (no one likes to nap on a redeye and wake up with that morning breath, right?), eyemask, and socks to keep your feet warm on a freezing plane. And hey, if you ask for it, they’ll add in an bloody mary, since they often carry tomato juice and tabasco sauce.

Tips for Booking Last Minute Travel

Tips for Booking Last Minute Travel

Although booking in advance is better, there are times when you might have to book a last minute trip. Whether for business travel or personal reasons, prices can be high and fees can be annoying. Here are some tips to help you save some money when you have no other option.

Avoid close in airline booking fees

You might have rewards points in your frequent flyer account and that might seem like a better value than to buy with cash. But some airlines charge a fee if you try booking a flight within 21 days of departure. You might be better off paying cash and save your points for later. Always have a Travel Team Agent look up flights, we can find the cheapest prices available and save you the hassle, call 1-800-788-0829 for more information.

Research ticket prices on multiple sites

Airlines like to keep the best deals to themselves instead of giving them to third-party booking sites. Airlines are more likely to discount the red-eye flights that either depart early or arrive late. If you have this scheduling flexibility, this might be the easiest ways to save some cash and still fly on your desired travel dates. Call a Travel Team Agent at  1-800-788-0829 for more information.

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to research nearby airports to find potentially lower prices.

Look for last minute hotel deals

Instead of going directly to the hotel website to book a room, look for last minute online specials. If you would prefer to pay with points, you will need to book directly through the hotel. You can have a Travel Team Agent look to see if there are any last minute deals by calling 1-800-788-0829

Be Open to the Unexpected

You will find the best last minute travel deals:

In the off-season

Don’t have a specific destination

Not required to fly

You can also find great, unexpected deals by subscribing to travel team newsletters.

china-shanghai1-travelteam

Bejing

11 Day tour of china china-beijing2-travelteam

At the heart of Beijing lies the Forbidden City, a gigantic palace compound that was the home of Ming and Qing Dynasty emperors; its Palace Museum is filled with gorgeous displays of Chinese art. Beijing also boasts well-preserved architectural jewels like the towering Pagoda of Tianning Temple, built from 1100 to 1120, and the Pagoda of Cishou Temple, built during the Ming dynasty in the 16th century.

Hong Kong

hong-kong-skyline2 gate1

This territory, made of multiple islands, returned to China’s possession in 1997 after more than a hundred years of British occupation. Upon its reunification with China, Hong Kong added certain stipulations that provide a unique degree of autonomy. For instance, the official currency remains the Hong Kong dollar (HKD); English and Chinese are the official languages; and the tiny nation has an independent judiciary system. In short, China and Hong Kong observe a “one country, two systems” policy that can have many foreigners scratching their heads. But don’t question it. Just accept it and enjoy everything this territory has to offer.

Hong Kong distinguishes itself from its Chinese brethren like Shanghai and Beijing with its vibrant, multifaceted culture and stunning cityscape. This British-Chinese hybrid astounds visitors with its striking juxtaposition of dense skyscrapers and lush landscapes. From sandy beaches to rugby pitches, there’s more fresh air than most travelers suspect. And, of course, as a world-class metropolis, Hong Kong boasts numerous urban diversions, such as culinary hot spots and museums.

Tokyo

tokyotower 14 day gate 1

Tokyo offers everything from ancient temples to glitzy modern nightlife. Experience a traditional sumo wrestling match, visit the ancient Senso-Ji Temple, and check out Minato Mirai 21 with its modern hotels, museums, boutiques, and cafes. It even has an amusement park!

Japan’s mega city is constantly buzzing with movement – feet clacking down sidewalks, cars zooming along streets, subway trains humming below ground, ships cruising in and out. And yet bright lights and loud signs beg you to pause, at the altar of consumerism. This is a city that feeds on motion and progress. But when you want to stop in Tokyo, the city will certainly make it worth your while.

Bangkok

thailand-bangkok1-travelteam

Bangkok is one of the most popular destinations in Asia to visit. Ancient temples and modern shopping malls make up Thailand’s capital, and Buddhist monks and regulars of Patpong (Bangkok’s red light district) share the city’s streets. This contrast can result in an exhilarating and chaotic setting.

Bangkok’s environment requires a lot of energy. Hot weather and persistent crowds can take their toll on unprepared visitors. The city has everything from humidity to humanity, but it’s this exotic overabundance that charms travelers. Here, you’ll find the world’s largest open-air market, a world-class aquarium housed in an eight-level shopping mall, a 150-foot golden Buddha statue and so much more. It’s a city of vast surprises, so savor its delightful incongruity.

Phuket

phuket-patong-beach

Phuket is located to the South West. Surrounded by the Andaman Sea and about an hour by plane from Bangkok, this island is a little piece of paradise, which comes with a relatively low price tag for everything from its accommodations to spa treatments and boat tours. Along with its tropical appeal, Phuket beckons to travelers wanting to experience its flavorful cuisine (think: lemongrass, lime leaves, chillies) and its rich culture, heavily influenced by its reigning religion: Buddhism.

Bali

bali-beach-600x399

Shangri-La, Elysium, Arcadia, Utopia and Bali are all synonymous with “heaven.” The only difference between them is that you can actually visit Bali. The word “Bali” conjures daydreams of the most fantastic landscape: towering volcanoes, sandy shores that fade into turquoise waters and curving coastlines crowned with staggered pagodas. Bali rarely disappoints.

So many types of visitors revel in this paradise. The ordinary traveler simply stays at the palatial oceanfront resort and indulges in luxurious spa treatments, decadent cuisine and lazy sunbathing. But the historian will find his or her delights at the island’s many temples while the adventurer will discover new paths up an active volcano. Bali is a dream come true, so wake up and book your ticket.

Manila

The capital of the Philippines is a city of blended history thanks to its Spanish, American, and Chinese influences. Visit the walled area of Manila called Intramuros to see the beautiful San Agustin Church and historic Fort Santiago. Another attraction is Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world; tourists are welcomed by horse-drawn carriages that take them to Binondo’s popular dining and shopping spots.

Hanoi

hanoi-travelteam (2)

From Art to food, history and spas, there are many reasons to visit Hanoi. See ancient architecture, take a taxi thru the city, ride on the back of a taxi bike as you see the wonders of this capital city. Take in the French influence, visit museums, eat wonderful street food and more. Try tea, iced coffee and rice wine. Enjoy a spa treatment, there is so much to see and do in Hanoi..Just skip visiting in summer, when the climate is at its most humid.

Viti Levu is the biggest island in Fiji and houses more than 600,000 people. The Fijian capital is also found on the island. The island has it’s current formation from  a series of geographical events where it was submerged in the sea and buried under massive amounts of lava and volcanic materials. The eastern side of the island experiences heavy rainfall, while the western side is drier most of the time. On the west side of the island, sugarcane production is more dominant while dairy industries and cattle ranching are more prominent on the eastern side. Mount Tomanivi (Mount Victoria), is the highest peak in the country and rises to 1,324 meters. Unique insects such as the Giant Fijian long-horned beetle are only found in this island.

It covers a total area of 106.4 square kilometers and has a population of around 9,100, approximately. It is rugged with little flat land. There is one road which circles the island. However, between the villages of Rukuruku and Buresala the road is little more than a track, as travel between these points is uncommon, most traffic being directed from these two villages to Levuka. Levuka Airport, which handles twice-daily Air Fiji flights to and from Suva is located on the west of the island, next to the Bureta District School compound. Transport around the island is mainly by carrier. There is one bus service, which runs once daily from the west of Ovalau to Levuka in the morning, and returns at 5pm, and is mainly used by schoolchildren.

Tips For The ultimate Summer Vacation

10 TIPS FOR THE ULTIMATE SUMMER VACATION

Summer is just around the corner. Now is the time to start planning your summer vacation and we have some tips to help you plan the perfect trip. Don’t forget to ask a travel team agent for information by calling 1-800-788-0829! Read on for 10 tips for the ultimate summer vacation…

Find a Cheap Flight

airplane-travelteam

There are a few tried and true ways to do this:

Avoid peak summer pricing by flying before mid-June or after late August

Fly cheaper days which are usually Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday in the USA, weekdays for international travel.

Always compare airfares so you know for sure which airline has the best deal.

Ask a travel team agent for more information by calling 1-800-788-0829

Watch for Warnings

Even though this advice may come from US sources, it can help tourists and travelers from any nation.

Weather: Keep an eye on weather forecasts, short and long term. For instance, if you are heading to the Caribbean you should be aware of the Atlantic hurricane season which is from June 1 to November 1. While these big storms do not usually pose a problem for the vast majority of travelers, it’s always smart to stay informed.

Crime: If you’ll be traveling outside the U.S., check the State Department’s Travel Advisories and country-specific information for warnings about unusual criminal or terror activity. Chances are good you won’t have to worry about any of this and will simply gain a little extra peace of mind.

Health: The Centers for Disease Control has a section called Travel Health Notices which offers information on disease outbreaks around the world and precautions travelers can take.

Holiday Travel

white christmas

Choose your travel dates around holidays carefully. Many people in the U.S. get a day off for the Fourth of July holiday and are tempted to add a couple of days to make it a longer vacation trip. You should know that the airlines know we like to add on to holidays and raise fares to take advantage of this thinking. Avoid paying the holiday premium by comparing prices for several different travel dates around a holiday to see which itinerary offers the most for your money.

Fly + Drive

coast-drive-road-sign-melbourne-aus-go-away

This can be a good way to see more attractions and save more money. Two ways to do this:

Fly to a bigger airport: If your destination is out in the ‘middle of nowhere’ consider skipping the closest airport for a bigger one, even if the larger facility is a few hour drive away from your ultimate destination. Generally speaking, the bigger the city/airport, the cheaper the flights.

Fly one-way, drive the other: Discount carriers often have good deals on one-way flights. Drive home at your leisure, knowing you’re the pilot and are free to stop along the way and see as many sights as you want.

Lodging Adventures

You can stay at a regular hotel, or make your accommodations part of the fun. For example, stay in a tree house, or sleep in a tipi; you can even spend the night in an ice hotel (and this one in Sweden says it’s open 365 days a year). Why settle for a standard experience when you can do something amazing?

Phone Tips

cell-phone-in-flight

Take pictures of important documents in case the originals get lost (passport, for example). Be sure to take a picture of your bag, too. If it goes missing, a picture will be extremely helpful because you’ll need to describe it and you’ll have a much better chance of getting it back. Finally, put some kind of identification or mark on your phone; airport Lost & Found departments are filled with phones and other electronics that cannot be reunited with owners because the phones are locked and there’s no way to identify them.

Water Bottles

water bottle pic

Bring an empty water bottle through airport security (if it’s filled, it will be tossed out); then look for a water refill station or drinking fountain so you won’t have to buy water at a snack bar. Or on the plane; some airlines (including Frontier and Spirit) charge for all beverages including water.

Your Valuables

dollars money wallet

Play it safe and leave your valuables at home; that way they won’t get lost or stolen. Some valuables are unavoidable, so here are some tips:

  1. Place wallets in front pockets and not in back.
  1. Do not dangle purses from the backs of chairs.
  1. Don’t leave phones unattended; thieves sometimes walk by tables, grab phones and run.

Travel Insurance

You never know if unforeseen events will happen. Travel insurance protects your investment in the event of Trip cancellation and trip interruption, Medical expenses and emergency evacuation, Lost, stolen or damaged baggage and travel documents. Travel Insurance can take the stress of these events, and help make your vacation smooth and stress free.

St. Patrick’s Day Traditions in Ireland

St. Patrick’s Day Traditions They Do in Ireland

Why is St. Patrick’s Day celebrated and what are some of the traditions? St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the day he died. Want to know where some of the traditions came from and how the Irish celebrate? Read on to learn more…

The Tradition of Wearing Green & Shamrocks

st patrick clover

The tradition of wearing Shamrock to celebrate Saint Patrick dates back from the seventeenth or eighteenth century. The British invaders suppressed the Gaelic way of life and this resulted the Catholic religion in Ireland being forced underground. Strict laws were enforced which prevented the Catholic population from attending schools so ‘hedge-schools’ were operated in secret.

The teaching of religion was also forbidden and the Shamrock plant was used to illustrate the message of the Christian Holy Trinity, though that the Shamrock is not a blue plant as the color originally associated with Saint Patrick was blue!

Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

st patricks parade

Saint Patrick’s Day is unique because it is celebrated worldwide. After the 1845 to 1849 Irish Famine emigration soared with as many as a million native Irish leaving their homes after the famine to settle in places like Boston, New York, Newfoundland, Perth, Sydney and beyond. The US Census Bureau now reports that 34 Million US Citizens claim Irish descent. Most emigrants like to commemorate their heritage and this is believed to  be how the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade came into being.

Rural Celebrations & Customs

st patricks logo

In rural Ireland, St Patrick’s Day is much more likely to be celebrated in traditional style, especially on the islands and in the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) areas with traditional music, sean nós singing and dancing, horse racing and GAA matches.

Turning buildings & Rivers Green?

green building

Ok so this tradition didn’t start in Ireland but now many countries follow suit. The use of the color green took a turn when in 1962 the city of Chicago decided to dye part of the Chicago River green. Since then the campaign to have just about every possible landmark turned green for the day  in recent years has included the Irish Parliament building, the Sydney Opera House, the Empire State Building, Niagara Falls and even the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt!

Have some Guinness (But don’t dye it green while in Ireland)

st patricks green beer

Who doesn’t love Guinness? But if you are in Ireland, the Irish pub-goers may look at you strange if you top a creamy pint of Guinness with a green Shamrock. NO!!!! It is estimated that as many as 13 Million pints of Guinness are consumed on Saint Patrick’s Day, up from the usual 5.5 Million per day! The Irish don’t actually drink green beer. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and turn your green if you really, really want, although you might want to stick to doing that in the states…

Dressing up

st patrick dress up woman

People all over the world who are of Irish origin use the opportunity of Saint Patrick’s Day to dress up. Kids love to wear the big green, white and orange hats and receive sweets thrown to them by the operators of Parade floats.

Traditional St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

Corned beef and cabbage is a very traditional Irish meal and it is often served for Saint Patrick’s Day. Traditional Irish music in the background and a family gathering are other Irish Saint Patrick’s Day traditions that have been going on for centuries.

Who was St. Patrick?

St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland

Image courtesy of Irelands hidden gems

St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, although he was not born in Ireland. Legend has it, that he was the son of an English nobleman and that he was captured and made to tend sheep in Ireland as a young boy. He was able to escape, but a voice kept telling him to come back to Ireland and convert the Irish people, who were pagans at the time to Christianity, which he did.

St Patrick used a three leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity i.e. God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit. As far as the legend of driving out the snakes, much like other cultures around the world, snakes represent evil, so he supposedly drove them out of Ireland. That may or may not be true, but to this day Ireland has no snakes!

10 Simple Tips For a Smoother Trip

10 Simple Trips For a Smoother Trip

Travel is full of choices, like which country to visit, how much to spend, and how long to go. But if you think about it, it’s the little things that can make a trip easier and less stressful. Here are 10 simple but clever tips to smooth the way on your next vacation.

  1. Park with your car nose out.
blue-car-icon

Who hasn’t rushed to the airport  parking lot, it’s easy to leave an interior light on; and that could mean a dead battery when you return.

By parking with the nose out, in case you return to find a dead battery, broken windows due to thievery or any other potential problem, you’ll want your car to be parked nose out for easier access to the battery, or for an easier hook-up to a tow truck.

  1. Leave time to get to economy lots
clock

As airports expand, they need more parking spaces; those spaces are ever more frequently found in parking lots that are off-airport grounds.

You’ll also find that these lots are often lower-priced than other lots. As a result, they’re the best place for economy-minded travelers, especially for longer trips where you’re racking up several days’ worth of parking fees. Also, these are the last lots to fill up. If you’re looking to save money, or are traveling over a major holiday weekend, leave extra time to get from the lot to the terminal.

  1. Pack essentials in your carry-on
business packing suit

On average, at least one bag on every flight is lost or delayed. If there’s anything you can’t live without, pack it in your carry-on. And you’ll get through airport security faster if you pack your carry-on more efficiently. For example, have your quart-size plastic bag with liquids and gels packed in an outside pouch or right near the top of your bag so that you can easily pull it out for screening.

  1. Know your hotel information
1-Pacific-Hotel-Cairns-5

If your baggage is lost or delayed; you miss your connection and will be late checking in; or you are going to a destination you’ve never visited before, you’ll want to have complete contact information for your hotel on your person. Before you leave home, print out the hotel’s name, address and phone number, and program the latter into your cell phone. It’s also a good idea to print out a map of the hotel’s neighborhood, whether for your own use or to show to a confused cab driver.

  1. Take old currency with you.
coins money

Exchanging foreign currency after you’ve returned home is a hassle, especially since almost no one spends any time in an actual bank these days. Why else do so many travelers have so much funny money lying around?

If you travel abroad with any frequency, and have any stray foreign currency laying around, take it with you the next time you cross international borders. Then, when you get some local currency, you can exchange the money from any other country at the same time.

  1. Save your boarding pass
busy_airport

Do you usually toss your boarding pass as soon as you step off the plane? You might want to reconsider. Your boarding pass can serve as proof of travel if your airline fails to give you the proper credit for frequent flier miles; this type of problem is particularly common if you’re flying on a codeshare partner of the airline in question. Your boarding pass can also be useful as a receipt for tax purposes, particularly if you’re self-employed.

  1. Know when to use — and when to skip — the skycaps

Skycap upside: You check-in at the curb, lose the bulky luggage and head straight to your gate.

Skycap downside: They don’t give you a seat assignment, and they cost a few bucks. (Don’t forget to tip; skycaps often aren’t paid a full wage and depend on tips to make their living.)

So when is it best to use the skycaps, and when can you skip them?

First off, if you’re running late, the skycaps could get you onto a plane you’d miss otherwise. If the line is long and time is tight, I walk back out to the skycaps, tip them well and sprint for the gate.

  1. Get your seat assignments ASAP
airline-seats

Your best bet is to check in online, which can typically be done up to 24 hours before your flight. But note that not all flights, airlines or classes of travel permit advance check-in (or seating assignments).

  1. Mark your bags with an easily recognizable item.
suitcase-icon

The solution: mark your bags by tying a colorful ribbon, stitching a unique patch or putting a large sticker on your bags. You won’t see other passengers pulling your bags off the carousel to check for their tiny name tags, and you’ll be able to see your suitcases come out the door from miles away.

  1. Remember your flight number

This may seem like a no-brainer, but knowing your flight number can make your life easier in small or foreign airports that do not list the full names of destination airports, or list by flight number alone.

When in doubt, your travel team agent is here to help you every step of the way. Call to speak to a Travel Team Agent at 1-800-788-0829 for more information.

The Basic Differences between Tahiti and Fiji:

 Tahiti

Tahiti: Tahiti is comprised of 118 islands spread over five great archipelagos, however, there are only a handful of islands that actually can receive tourists.

The main ones are the Island of Tahiti, Moorea, Le Tahaa, Rangiroa, Huahine, Manihi, and Bora Bora.

Bora Bora is the most famous of these islands.

Tahiti is full of majestic mountain peaks, turquoise waters, and white-sand beaches.

The official language in Tahiti is French.

Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea and a series of islands extending along basically a line.

Tahiti has over 20 resorts that offer overwater bungalows – Fiji has less than 5.

Fiji consists of 2 large islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu) surrounded by many small islands

Fiji is made up of more than 330 islands and is nearby Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the west

Samoa and Tonga to the east and New Zealand to the south.

Fiji is known for the friendliness of its people..

Although Fiji is very beautiful, Tahiti is more spectacular, especially the island of Bora Bora.

GREAT TAHITI AND BORA BORA TRAVEL DEALS

Bora Bora is probably the most famous of the Tahiti Islands.

The island lies just northwest of Tahiti, less than an hour away by plane from Papeete.

Bora Bora is a romantic destination filled with overwater bungalows.

Bora Bora is part of the Leeward Islands of French Polynesia, in the Pacific Ocean.

Visitors come for its tropical climate and stay in resorts and over-water bungalows.

Many visit Bora Bora to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Bora Bora is a romantic destination for honeymoons, weddings, and for those who just want to escape to a tropical paradise.

There’s one airport, Bora Bora Airport.

There is no public transport, so visitors get around by small boat, rental car, bicycle or small, two-seater buggies.

You can get around the main island in three hours.

You will enjoy snorkeling, diving, canoeing, and cruises.

Moorea

moorea pearl beach bungalow

Moorea Island is just northwest of the island of Tahiti.

Surrounded by a bright blue lagoon, Moorea is an island formed by volcanoes.

Moorea has great snorkeling, hiking, and amazing sunsets.

You can get here by ferry or plane from Papeete, Tahiti.

Moorea is a favorite destination for couples, families, and locals.

Getting There:

To get to either place, you will have to fly out of Los Angeles.

Tahiti is an 8-hour nonstop flight from Los Angeles.  Tahiti is halfway between California and Australia.

Fiji is about a 10 1/2 hour flight from Los Angeles.

Fiji is a 4-hour flight from Sydney and 2 hours from New Zealand.

In Fiji, there are very few big chain hotels.

Most of Fiji’s resorts are all bungalow (“Bures”) style hideaways geared for couples and romance.

Many Fijian island hideaways are on their “own” island and consist of anywhere from one to 50 or so bures.

Each bure is free-standing and beachfront, some are set back from the beach and even some yet maybe “treehouse” bures.

The private island Fiji hideaways are usually owned by individuals from Australia or the US.

Many of the Fiji island resorts offer meal plans and many activities for their guests,

Tahiti is more similar to Hawaii. Larger chain hotels such as Sheraton, Sofitel, Intercontinental, and Four Seasons dominate this island paradise. The rooms however are very different than Hawaiian resorts. The rooms in Tahiti are mostly bungalows. Freestanding garden, beach, and overwater bungalows. All resorts have restaurants, pool areas, spas, and concierge.

Overall Feel at a Fiji Resort Hideaway: You will feel very private, while surrounded by unspoiled paradise. The Fijian staffs are friendly, warm, and very interactive with the guests. Often, the staff members (depending on the resort) check on guests often making sure all of their needs are met. Fijians are the friendliest people and you’ll learn the word “Bula” very quickly (it means hello in Fijian)

Overall Feel at a Tahiti Resort: Guests will enjoy the feel of a full-service resort complete with workout rooms, internet rooms, variety of restaurants and bars. Most hotels in Tahiti have a concierge to help guests make restaurant reservations, set up snorkel trips, and more. Guests need to create their own itinerary in Tahiti. The staff operates more like that of a Hawaiian or Caribbean Hotel.

Things you CAN do on a Fiji Honeymoon that you cannot do in Tahiti:

  • Private Picnics: You can be dropped off on your own remote beach for the day with a gourmet lunch and no interruptions- either for little or no charge, depending on what island you stay on in Fiji.
  • Private Dinner on the beach, under the stars for no extra charge.
  • Visit an authentic Fijian village and learn about the culture, meet the people
  • Buy authentic handicrafts – dirt cheap. It’s shop till you drop there with the US dollar being so strong in Fiji.
  • Drink KAVA- every night in Fiji no matter where you are staying you can participate in a traditional Fijian cultural ritual of Kava drinking.
  • Dive the Somosomo Straits. Fiji is the soft coral capital of the world; it is a world-class diving destination.
  • GET MARRIED LEGALLY- You can get married legally in Fiji with no waiting period. Fiji weddings are recognized in the USA as legal weddings.

Fiji is a great choice for those seeking:

  • A high level of seclusion and privacy-many of the resorts only allow 5-20 couples at a time, this makes a Fiji honeymoon one of the most private types of honeymoons out there.
  • Connections with the local culture – visiting a Fijian village is one of the highlights of a Fiji Honeymoon vacation.
  • World-class diving- Most Fiji resorts have PADI instruction and a myriad of dive sites within minutes of the island.
  • A great value honeymoon for the dollar (the best in the South Pacific)- a Fiji honeymoon is a lot more cost-effective than a Tahiti Honeymoon because of the strength of the US Dollar in Fiji.
  • A legally recognized wedding- You can get married on the beach in Fiji and it’s completely legal. There are no blood tests to take, and very little paperwork to do beforehand. Most resorts take care of all of the paperwork on the day of arrival. You can get married the next day in Fiji.

Tahiti is a great choice for:

  • See Bora Bora…and much more – For most tourists, a stay on Bora Bora is essential, The “Pearl of the Pacific”.
  • Make a short excursion to Moorea, Tahiti’s sister island – Moorea, 17 km from Papeete, is reachable by fast ferry in only 40 minutes. It is the most sparsely populated island (just 18,000 people) and things there are still unspoiled.
  • Dive into a natural aquarium – Divers the world over recognize Tahiti and the islands for their diving sites and passes with more fish than anywhere else in the world.
  • Spend a night in an overwater bungalow – They represent the ultimate level of indulgence: luxury in paradise. Let yourself be rocked to sleep by the water lapping against the stilts, watch fish dance through the glass pane in the floor, dive off your terrace into a natural aquarium, and soak in the tropical essence.
  • See a performance of Polynesian dance – Forbidden by missionaries, dancing is, even more, an integral part of Polynesian culture today. Girls and boys begin dancing as soon as they can walk. The annual Heivai Tahiti festivals in July, organized in Tahiti and on most islands, is a chance to see a performance by the most famed professional dance troupes and schools. Major hotels regularly organize Polynesian evenings with song and dance during happy hour or themed buffet dinners.
