Tips to prevent identity theft when traveling

Tips to prevent identity theft when traveling

Travelers are often well versed on how to avoid scams and theft while traveling. In today’s digital age, aside from keeping your belongings safe, you want to keep your identity secure as well. Modern technology has made it easier for scammers to get access to your identity. Read these tips on how to prevent identity theft while traveling…

Unpack/empty your wallet and purse before you go

dollars-money-wallet

Many of us carry essential documents with us in our wallet or purse. Things like social security card, medical documents, checkbooks – make sure to ‘unpack before you travel’, remove these before you leave home. If you are unsure, make a scan and email it to yourself, so there is no chance of someone getting ahold of them.

Guard Your Documents

safe

This might seem straight forward but it pays to pay attention and not leave any sensitive documents lying around your hotel room. Keep any important documents locked up in the hotel safe.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Use Caution with Shared and Insecure Internet Connections

laptop on plane

While traveling you will see a lot of shared internet networks. Know the risk and use these connections with caution. Don’t do any banking, or visit any site where you need to type in passwords which could be shared later on.  Save the important stuff for when you are usin g secured wi-fi network. If you are traveling with your own laptop and using free Wi-Fi, it is important to make sure your connections are secure. Some websites let you log in over open networks; always try to use HTTPS://www.website.com instead of HTTP://www.website.com (the S stands for “secure” and indicates that the data is encrypted for more protection).

Delete All Cookies and Browsing History on Public Terminals

If you must use a public computer, the last thing you should do before you walk away is delete all cookies and browsing history before you log off. Many computers can cache quite a bit of significant information, and some websites are even set up to keep you logged in when you close the browser unless you specifically log off.

Use Only Bank ATMs

atm bank

Identity thieves have been known to install card readers in an ATM so they can access your card number and PIN. This happens most often at non-bank, “generic” ATMs (in hotels, convenience stores, etc.), which have less oversight and are therefore more vulnerable than bank-run and hosted ATMs. Keep away from ATM’s and just use the ones at banks; these tend to be targeted by thieves much less often.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

Keep your luggage tags simple

suitcase-icon

It is not the safest idea to display all of your personal identifiable information on the tags. Just list your first name, cell phone and a PO box or email, rather than list your home address and more.

Great Northerner Premier Escorted Luxury Vacation Auckland to Wellington

This 9-day New Zealand vacation takes you across the North Island of New Zealand to experience incredible landscapes and Maori culture.

Your New Zealand tour begins in Auckland, a city that’s consistently rated as one of the most livable on the planet. A part of what makes this city so special is its natural beauty. The city is located on a stretch of land surrounded by a natural harbour on either side. A great way to appreciate the city is to view the harbours from contrasting angles. First, cruise out onto Waitemata Harbour to explore it from sea level before scaling the heights of the Sky Tower to view it from above. Head north from Auckland to the Bay of Islands, a region of 140 subtropical islands that boasts incredible beaches and fishing spots. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to see where the British and Maori signed their historic treaty before heading out on a dolphin-watching expedition.

Head back south past Auckland to the Waitomo Caves where you’ll venture through natural tunnels lit by thousands of glow worms. In Rotorua you can marvel at the natural assortment of mud pools and hot springs that makes this area one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist hubs. Soak in the hot springs and check out Pohutu Geyser, which shoots water 30 meters into the air. Then meet the area’s Maori locals, visiting the Whakarewarewa village in the nearby valley and taking in a hangi feast to appreciate the island’s indigenous culinary traditions.

Close out your New Zealand vacation in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand and its second largest city. Again, the landscape is much of the city’s appeal. Ride the cable car up to the Botanical Gardens and look out over Cook Strait, which separates the North Island from the South. Then stroll through the hillside, surveying the city’s Victorian timber homes and taking the time to appreciate its ascendant arts culture. You might want to take in a museum before your return flight. With the National Archives, National Art Gallery, National Library, and Museum of New Zealand, you’ll have plenty to choose from.

What to Pack for a Fiji Vacation

What to Pack for a Fiji vacation

Aw Fiji, the land of blue skies, golden sandy beaches, palm trees and gorgeous sunsets. Fiji is the perfect holiday destination. This Fiji packing list is designed to make sure you have the best experience. Read on to find out what you need to pack for your Fiji vacation.

How to Choose between Tahiti & Fiji

Hat/Suncreen/Sunglasses

woman_suntan_lotion.jpg

The sun in Fiji can be intense – so don’t forget the sunscreen, glasses and hat. Sunscreen is pretty pricey in Fiji. Hats are a must on the beach. It’s considered insulting to Fijians to wear a hat in their village, so just use sunscreen in that case.

Insect Repellent

Insect repellents with DEET are very effective against mosquito bites. You don’t want to spend your vacation swatting the bugs, and getting itchy bites. This is a packing must.

Browse Fiji vacations here….

Reef Shoes (or Aqua socks)

With so much coral, you don’t want to damage the coral or your feet. Reef shoes will be very handy. Grab a pair of inexpensive reef shoes so you don’t get cuts from sharp rocks, or accidentally scraping your feet on live coral while snorkelling.

Snorkelling Gear

scuba-gear-sm.jpg

If you’ve got the space, Take your own so you’re sure to have a set that fits – and you’ll know it’s clean! If not, your resort will most likely have snorkelling gear you can borrow.

Walking Shoes

sneaker.jpg

Don’t forget the right footwear as there are amazing hiking trails and walks in Fiji that you don’t want to miss out on. To make the most of the stunning waterfalls and parks, bring footwear with good support and grip.

Swimwear

swimming-vacation-girl.jpg

With all the swimming you’ll be doing – consider taking two pairs of swimwear.  Bikinis look great on the beach, they aren’t practical for water-sports like snorkelling or windsurfing when you’ll be wanting something a little more… stable!

First Aid Essentials

Simple first aid supplies can be hard to find in Fiji – and even harder on the outer islands. So take some essentials with you.

Casual Loose Clothing

Resorts are typically laid back when it comes to the dress code. When you leave the resort, you should be aware of the customs of the local people, in that you should dress conservatively. Visiting a village or a church? Men should always wear a shirt, and women should have shoulders and knees covered. Loose, cotton or linen clothing are ideal in the hot temperatures. Tip: Take a fancier outfit, as some of the fancier resort restaurants have a smart dress code.

Camera / Underwater Camera

You’re going to want to take pictures of your trip and Fijian adventures – so don’t forget to bring a camera! You might want to bring an underwater camera to capture the beauty of Fiji’s coral and colourful fish while snorkelling or scuba diving. If you use your phone as a camera, make sure to have a durable and waterproof phone case, it will keep your phone from breaking or getting sand, and will make life easier if your phone is protected.

9 Tips for Making the Most of Your New Zealand Vacation

9 Tips for Making the Most of Your New Zealand Vacation

A trip to New Zealand is a vacation you must experience and cross it off your bucket list. Planning a New Zealand vacation can be tricky if you don’t know a few things first. The following are some tips and tricks for making the most of your New Zealand vacation.

1   Book early to make sure you get that nice hotel room

hotel room

New Zealand is gorgeous — that’s why you want to travel there in the first place! Problem is, everyone else thinks the same thing. New Zealand has a few large cities that can deal with large tourism numbers in the peak season, but many of the best natural landmarks are located in smaller places with a limited number of hotel rooms. If you want to make sure you get that room with a view, book many months, even a year, ahead. Ask your travel team agent for details by calling 1-800-788-0829!

2  Want to be spontaneous? Travel in a motorhome

goway new zealand road motorhome

Some travelers like to take the road less travelled and explore the country like a local in a motorhome. Travelling by motorhome guarantees that you’ll always have a roof over your head and that you won’t be tied down to availability of accommodations. It allows you the freedom to pick where you sleep and where you head to next on any given day – like a self-drive tour, but without the need to pre-book accommodations for each night. Ask your travel team agent for details by calling 1-800-788-0829!

3  Travel in the shoulder season of Spring or Fall

If you want to avoid the crowds but still take advantage of the incredible weather, head on a New Zealand vacation in the shoulder season of spring or fall. the crowds will be noticeably smaller and the prices will be more affordable. Seasons are reversed so Fall is March – May and Spring is September- November.

Hotels and restaurants will be cheaper in the spring or fall, which is always a bonus when travelling, especially in a popular country. As well, the moderate temperatures are great for getting outside, as you don’t have the summer heat to wipe you out.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

4   You can take advantage of great deals by traveling in the winter

queenstown-new-zealand-100-percent-nz-site

Try a New Zealand winter vacation. Winter is the low season in New Zealand, which means fewer fellow tourists to get the nice accommodations and see all the incredible sights. Prices are much lower for great hotels, and the winter is moderate compared to North America.

5   Have a Flat White

This is a specialized coffee drink from New Zealand. It is sort of like a latte but with less foam and volume. This is a very popular drink in New Zealand.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

6  Indulge in the world-class wines

wine

New Zealand may not produce a lot of wine but the wine it does is ranked best in the world. In particular, the Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are fantastic.

No matter where you go in the country, you’ll find wine regions that you can explore in their full. The country’s climate is well-suited to winemaking as the large amounts of sunshine, moderate climate, and cool breezes are ideal for grapes to grow. Visit Marlborough or Queenstown; Marlborough is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, which is considered the best of its vintage in the world. Queenstown is surrounded by wine valleys on all sides.

7    Taste the country’s seafood

fish seafood dinner

New Zealand  offers a bounty of seafood, as no matter where you head to in the country, the ocean is nearby. If you like fish, you’ll be treated to some of the world’s best king salmon at Mount Cook. Mount Cook salmon has some of the highest natural amounts of Omega 3 fats of any fish.

Ask your travel team agent for more information in planning your trip by calling 1-800-788-0829 today!

8   Take advantage of all the adventure

The city of Queenstown is known as the worldwide capital for adventure tourism, so if you’ve ever wanted to go zip-lining, sky-diving or bungee-jumping, you best head there. It’s also smart to plan what activities you want to take part in ahead of your New Zealand vacation so you’re not wasting time planning the details once on your trip.

9  Visit Wellington

newzealand-wellington-travelteam

Make sure to visit the capital, Wellington. This city is full of activity. There is plenty to keep you occupied no matter what your interests are. If you’re curious about the country’s history, head to Te Papa Museum – it explores the country’s formation and is free!

Sydney is a the top of the list with a median price of a house at $909,914, while the average price in Melbourne is $810,966 for a house. If you don’t necessarily want or need to live in one of these big cities, consider living in one of the smaller cities, where the prices are more affordable. In Adelaide, for instance, a median house price is around $455,094, in Perth this would be a median of $484,252 for a house. Hobart is the most affordable of the capital cities, where the average price for a house is $403,174.

Shopping around will get a decent deal on utilities, but basics, including power, gas and internet for a standard two bedroom apartment will come to about $350 a month.

Travel and commuting in Australia

city train bus

Public transport in the cities is pretty good. Compared to cities like London and New York, Australian public transport is reasonably priced with the capital cities making up 6 of the 10 most affordable places for public transport. While New York might have significantly cheaper single trip tickets than Sydney or London, Australia’s public transport system will give you more miles for less.

Health and fitness

workouts

Australia has an excellent healthcare system. Permanent residents have access to Medicare, which you pay for through the tax system.  Many Australians take out private health insurance to cover extras, like dental and specialist care.

The amount you have to pay for private health insurance depends on where you live and what coverage want. It could be as little as $43 per month, or as much as $1,150 per month, on average people pay for additional private health insurance about $2,000 per year. Expats from New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom are entitled to treatment through Medicare thanks to reciprocal health agreements between countries.

Gym memberships average $65 a month. Many Australians take advantage of the outdoor weather with outdoor personal trainers and group sessions. Walking, running and cycling are some of the most popular fitness techniques Down Under,  more so than swimming.

Eating in… and out

 restaurant dinner

Groceries can be expensive in Australia than many other major cities around the world.

Two movie tickets in Sydney will cost you $39, this is about $8 more expensive than if you saw the same film in New York. You might pay more for many things in Australia, but you earn can more too.

Salaries in Australia are much higher. It is estimated that Australians earn over 25% more than their British counterparts. Australia’s minimum wage is AU$17.70 per hour compared to AU$14.66 for the United Kingdom and AU$10.08 for the USA.

Food

food burger fris

A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant in Sydney will cost upwards of $70; this same meal will cost about $80 in New York or London. On average expect to pay $10 for a Big Mac Meal, $7 for a beer and $3.50 for a coffee. 1 pint of beer will range $4 – $8 USD. Gallon of milk is about $4 USD, a dozen eggs is around $3.50 USD.

It is easy to see how the quality of life, sunshine and months of beach weather, makes Australia a dream destination for travelers around the world.

What is Included in an All-Inclusive River Cruise?

What is Included in an All-Inclusive River Cruise?

All-inclusive river cruises are very attractive. While they at times are priced higher than cruises that are non-inclusive, river cruises on all-inclusive lines like A-ROSA, CroisiEurope, Scenic, Tauck, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection can offer real savings when you add up all of the extra-cost items that they are including in the base price of the cruise. Travel team offers river cruises on all these lines and more.

Here’s a look at the most common items that are included in an all-inclusive river cruise.

Airport transfers & port charges

airport1-travelteam

You might not think about it, but having transfers included from the airport to the ship and back can be a real deal, particularly in places like Nuremberg or Budapest, where the airport is quite a distance from the docking position of your river cruise ship. Port charges are included as well on most river cruises. These can add hundreds of dollars per person to the price if they are not included. This way there are no hidden costs.

Call a Travel Team Agent today at 1-800-788-0829 for more information or to book your river cruise!

Beverages

wine

Another big draw of an all-inclusive river cruise is having all of your shipboard beverages included. While the majority of river cruise lines offer more than an average oceangoing cruise line (beer, wine and soft drinks are complimentary on most lines at lunch and dinner), it’s nice to know you can order a glass of wine in the lounge in the afternoon and not be charged for it. You can also expect this to extend to other beverages like water, coffees, teas and the like.

Shore Excursions

Prague Viking River Cruise Elegant ELbe

All-inclusive river cruise lines will usually offer all excursions ashore on a complimentary basis. This can add up to significant savings over river cruise lines that offer optional, fee-based tours to far-flung or alternate destinations.

Many all-inclusive river cruise lines also offer complimentary bicycles that are aboard your ship for guests to use while ashore. Always ask a travel team agent for details on what is included in your river cruise by calling 1-800-788-0829.

Gratuities

handing-over-money

All-inclusive river cruise lines typically include all gratuities. Including gratuities also reduces stress for many international travellers. While tipping is common in the United States, it isn’t in many other countries, where service charges are built into the price of consumer goods. You don’t have to worry about tipping, It’s all been taken care of.

Keep in mind that some river cruise line may include more than others. You can find out specifically what is included by calling a travel team agent at 1-800-788-0829 for more information.
