10 Reasons to Take Luxury River Cruises

10  Reasons to Take Luxury River Cruises

If you are thinking of taking a luxury river cruise, there has never been a better time. You might be weighing the idea if a splurge is really worth it? What river line is the best for a luxurious river cruise?

You have questions — we have answers! Travel Team books river cruises on all the major lines, and our agents have cruised many of the rivers! So if you want to know if a luxury river cruise is for you, read this list of reasons why a splurge is definitely worth it:

Browse some luxury River Cruises here…   Ask a Travel Team Agent for more information at 1-800-788-0829!

  1. Unlimited Beverages

wine

Some river lines include beer, wine and soft drinks with meals (AmaWaterways, Emerald and Avalon, for instance), but luxury river cruises like Uniworld, Scenic and Tauck offer all-inclusive beverage programs. If you like to sip a flute of quality Champagne before dinner, quaff wines paired with your meal and enjoy a snifter of Cognac afterward, all-inclusive beverages can be a good deal.

  1. Lots of Choices for Shore Excursions

ship_onboard_bikes

If you don’t like being herded into one mass shore excursion, luxury river cruises give you more choices at each destination. You can expect that most companies offer at least two different shore excursions, with one usually tailored for first-time visitors and another for those who may have visited before. Also, the groups on these tours tend to be split into 15 passengers or fewer, often with a separate group for “gentle walkers.” On some occasions, the range of activities is much wider than walking, with opportunities to learn painting, go for a hike, ride a bike, or visit a brewery. And, of course, all but a few optional excursions were included in the fare. Scenic has walking, biking and self-guided tours using nifty ScenicTailorMade GPS electronic devices. Tauck’s larger ships carry three tour directors, and offerings also include small groups and a “leisurely” walking option.

  1. No Tipping

handing-over-money

On luxury river cruises on lines such as scenic, expect to be pampered at every turn, making you feel thoroughly spoiled. Service is excellent and you won’t have that end-of-cruise crisis where you desperately try to figure out how much to tip everyone. None of that “automatic tip” sticker shock on the final bill, either. APT, Scenic and Tauck include tips in their fares, too.

  1. Posh Suites

Luxury river cruise ships tend to have more suites than other river ships do. Tauck’s ms Inspire has eight loft cabins that span two decks and 22 suites measuring a generous 300 square feet. Often, suites may be individually decorated, so you can choose one that suits your personality — from feminine decor fit for a queen to something more manly and regal. Suites on riverboats will typically have double sets of windows or French balconies. What’s more, suites on most ships allow for the bed to face the windows, so you can lounge in bed and watch the scenery float by.

  1. Butlers

caterer_woman

Most of us don’t have the luxury of a butler waiting on us, but trust us, learning to be spoiled is remarkably easy. Butlers are rare on river ships; however, all Uniworld suites and all Scenic cabins come with butler service. Uniworld’s Maria Theresa carries two butlers to serve only 11 suites, while Scenic’s Jewel has four onboard butlers who cater to the entire ship of 67 cabins — so the level of attention you experience may differ depending on which line you choose  Breakfast in bed? A shoe shine? Ask him for a couple of glasses of Champagne, and he’d probably come back with the whole bottle.

  1. Personal Service

Even if you don’t have a butler, luxury lines make a point of learning passenger preferences. Dining room staff make it a point to know passengers’ morning beverages of choice and want to offer yours as soon as you sit down to breakfast..

  1. Luxe Bathrooms

luxury_bathroom_rich

Even bathroom quality improves when you upgrade to a luxury river cruise ship. On Maria Theresa, all cabins are stocked with L’Occitane en Provence toiletries and suites have additional Hermes products. Scenic also offers L’Occitane products, while Tauck stocks Molton Brown. Ship bathrooms can sometimes be tiny, plastic and depressing. On the other hand, Maria Theresa’s bathrooms — even in the least expensive cabins — are like little marble-clad palaces. Not only heated floors, but heated towel racks and heated mirrors that don’t fog up. Bathrobes and slippers? You bet.

  1. Restaurant-Quality Dining

food

Open seating, flexible dining times, high-quality ingredients and artistic presentations make dining a pleasure. There’s also a real effort to present regional cuisine from the itinerary. Uniworld, Tauck and Scenic all offer exclusive alternative dining opportunities. For example, Scenic has a second restaurant offering (Portobellos, serving Italian cuisine), an exclusive tasting dinner for 10 (limited to passengers with Diamond Deck cabins) and 24-hour room service.

  1. Bells and Whistles

Luxury river cruise lines tend to have state-of-the-art gizmos and gadgets. Scenic carries electric bicycles and replaces loudspeaker commentary with its TailorMade GPS electronic devices, which supply information about sights along the itinerary. Uniworld’s Maria Theresa’s TVs magically appear from behind the mirrors and each cabin is equipped with a keyboard to access the Internet through the “infotainment” system. Many Tauck cabins are equipped with Keurig coffee makers.

  1. No Nickel and Diming

The higher-end cruise lines will transfer you between airport and ship, included in your fare. They’ll throw in free Wi-Fi. They won’t charge you for specialty coffees. Exercise classes and hikes are included. Some, like Scenic, offer laundry services to nearly all passengers. Uniworld provides unlimited free laundry service to suite passengers. Chances are, your bill at the end of the cruise will only have a few line items.

Transfer via motorcoach to the AmaDara in Kampong Cham for your seven-night cruise. Board a motorcoach to the Twin Mountains, known as Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei (male and female mountains). In the annals of Khmer legend, the twin mountains were formed as the result of a competition between the men and women of an ancient Cambodian kingdom to resolve which gender would be responsible for wedding proposals. Later, join fellow guests for an evening Welcome Dinner. (L,D)

Note: All cruise only guests must meet at our designated hotel in Siem Reap on Embarkation day to join the transfer to the ship in Kampong Cham. DAY 2   ANGKOR BAN – OKNHATAY -PHNOM PENH

During the morning, go on a walking tour to Angkor Ban, one of the few villages in Cambodia that was not destroyed under the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. Here people still live in their traditional wooden abodes and keep their old cultural traditions alive. Hundreds of wooden houses stand intact on stilts, shaded with banana trees, among the hustle and bustle of the daily agricultural on-going of the local villagers. After visiting here, the ship sails to Oknhatey or “Silk Island,” located on the lush banks of the Mekong River. This island is known for its rich tradition of silk weaving. While here, you’ll visit a local elementary school and observe the traditional silk weaving of handicrafts. Your cruise continues to sail to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. (B,L,D)

DAY 3   OUDONG – KAMPONG TRALACH – PHNOM PENH

Your morning excursion takes you to Oudong, Cambodia’s former royal capital from the early 17th century until 1866. Today, Oudong is a place of pilgrimage for Cambodians. While here, be treated to a memorable Buddhist Blessing Ceremony at a monastery. After visiting Oudong, be treated to a truly authentic excursion, an oxcart ride through a local village Kampong Tralach. Later in the day, experience Phnom Penh via a tuk tuk ride and be enchanted by the city’s French Colonial architecture and tree-lined boulevards set amidst monumental Angkorian architecture. After returning to the ship, enjoy Khmer folk dancing performed by local children in the Saigon Lounge. (B,L,D)

DAY 4   PHNOM PENH

This morning’s excursion takes you to Cambodia’s infamous Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge’s grim Tuol Sleng S21 detention center (Genocide Museum). After lunch on board, you’ll explore the highlights of the city, followed by a visit to the Royal Palace, the spectacular Silver Pagoda and the National Museum, which has an outstanding collection of Khmer crafts. (B,L,D)

DAY 5   BORDER CROSSING

Spend the day cruising the Mekong River as your ship crosses the border into Vietnam. (B,L,D)

DAY 6    TAN CHAU

Visit Tan Chau, a small Mekong River town unspoiled by tourism. You will have the opportunity to enjoy an authentic experience via a traditional “xe-loi” (trishaw) ride around the town, with stops at silk-making and rattan mat workshops, followed by a boat ride through the narrow channels of the Mekong River to “Evergreen Island.” Alternatively, take a boat ride to Evergreen Island and return to Tan Chau, where you will visit a rattan mat workshop. Later in the day, cruise to Sa Dec. (B,L,D)

DAY 7   SA DEC – XEO QUYT – CAI BE

Once ashore in Sa Dec, tour the town where French writer Marguerite Duras spent many years in her youth. Visit a colorful local market and the 19th-century house of Mr. Huynh Thuy Le, Duras’ Chinese paramour, on whom her prize-winning novel “The Lover” is said to be based. Later, board a motorcoach for Xeo Quyt, once used as a military base during the French war and now an important ecological site. You will have an opportunity to visit candy and rice paper making workshops, and the historic Kiet Old House. In Cai Be, cap the day off with a festive Farewell Dinner on board. (B,L,D)

DAY 8   HO CHI MINH CITY – DISEMBARKATION

pumping_gas

The British government, in its travel advisories, singles out Orlando, Florida for ripping off tourists. “Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport.”

2      TAKE CARE OF THE FLOWERS  (CHINA)

tiaare flowers

This tip is actually a nice one; The Chinese government suggests several common rules of etiquette for the U.S., including the following suggestion: “Take good care of flowers and trees, etc.”

laptop planning travel tips computer gg

Australia specifically advises it’s business travelers against using Gmail or Hotmail for email. “Use discretion when deciding whether to link to free internet services available in public places to connect to your corporate network. Avoid using web mail services such as Hotmail or Gmail for official business.” We think the theory is as a non US citizen, since these are US based companies, a foreigners email is more likely to be phished, but we aren’t for sure the reason for this one.

4       DO NOT STALK ANYONE (GERMANY)

Ok, we have to admit, reading this one made us laugh! Germany sees fit to advise its citizens against following and harassing others on American soil: “In the U.S., repeatedly following or repeatedly harassing another person, called ‘stalking,’ is punishable by law.” LOL, Thanks for the tip Germany!

5     BEWARE OF GUNS AT NIGHTTIME (CANADA)

Since guns are Canada much more common in the U.S. than in other countries, Canada travel warnings advise that “the possession of firearms and the frequency of violent crime are generally more prevalent in the USA than in Canada. Within large metropolitan areas, violent crime more commonly occurs in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, particularly from dusk to dawn. Verify official neighborhood crime statistics before planning an outing.” Well, this is a good tip for anywhere you go, local or not.

6      STAY AWAY FROM THE EAST COAST (CHINA)

New-York-City

The Chinese government says that the West Coast of the U.S. is safer than the East Coast: “Overall, the western United States is safer than the eastern portion, and a city is relatively safe during the day compared to at night.”

7       NO, YOU SHOULD REALLY WATCH OUT FOR GUNS (GERMANY)

Here’s what the German government says: “In the USA, it is comparatively easy to obtain possession of guns. If you are the victim of an armed attack, do not try to fight back!”

8        DOORS MIGHT BE CLOSED (RUSSIA)

front-door-sm

The Russian government advises “In some parts of the country, especially in derelict areas within the major cities, the majority of people prefer to keep their doors closed and to avoid going out alone at night.”

9        DO NOT INSPIRE ROAD RAGE  (CHINA)

coast-drive-road-sign-melbourne-aus-go-away

The Chinese government wants its citizens to be polite behind the wheel: “Be courteous to other vehicles while driving; unless it is absolutely necessary, avoid using the horn and avoid other behavior that can easily anger other drivers.”

10      DO NOT TALK TO PROSTITUTES (GERMANY)

Germany reminds its citizens that “in many U.S. states, it is a criminal offense to engage in sexual activities with prostitutes. Even talking to a prostitute may be punishable by law.”

11       DON’T PEE IN THE STREET (SWITZERLAND)

Switzerland is careful to note that the U.S. takes a very hard-line stance against nudity, as well it cautions, don’t pee on things: “The legal system can be very different from one state to another and is often inspired by more rigid moral principles than in Switzerland. For example, bathing topless or without a shirt is forbidden (even for children), as is urinating in the street or taking partially naked pictures of children (even at home).”

12         DON’T JOKE ABOUT BOMBS (UK)

Just in case anyone didn’t know, Americans don’t have a sense of humor about terrorism. “Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports,” the UK government warns.

13        TRY TO AVOID BEING NAKED (GERMANY)

sun

The U.S. is not quite as into nude sunbathing as other cultures. Like Switzerland, Germany advises its citizens that  “Although the laws in individual states criminalizing nudity as ‘indecent exposure’ are rarely prosecuted and punished, it should definitely be noted that nude bathing, and even changing clothes on the beach, can be construed as indecent exposure and therefore may cause problems. Only at a few beaches is nude bathing permitted or even tolerated.”

14          DON’T CUT IN LINE  (CHINA)

airport_lines

The Chinese government sees fit to warn its citizens of the U.S.’s obsession with line order: “In the United States, when many people are lining up for services at some distance away from the window, wait your turn in line. Failing to observe this convention could lead to unnecessary disputes.”

15        THE TAP WATER TASTES GROSS  (AUSTRIA)

water bottle

Austrians are not into the taste of American tap water: “Tap water—while not very tasty (it’s chlorinated)—is usually considered safe to drink.”

16       THE AMERICAN DREAM ISN’T REAL (RUSSIA)

Russia’s travel advisories tell Russians “The ‘American dream’ originates from here, as does another model—the special democratic character of American society with its ‘incredible freedom.’ However, due to the presence of the ‘young aristocracy’—already formed in the 20th century—and the specific model of American society, inequalities in socio-economic status between rich and poor are no lesser than in any other country in the world.”

17     EXPECT TO BE HARASSED IN ARIZONA (MEXICO)

After Arizona passed SB 1070, the Mexican government issued a travel warning for its citizens about traveling, living, or studying in the state. It warned that under the law (which was designed to target undocumented Mexican immigrants), foreigners without the right documentation can be detained. Furthermore, “all Mexican citizens could be bothered or questioned without motive at any moment.”

18       WATCH OUT FOR EXPENSIVE DOCTOR VISITS  (AUSTRALIA)

Doctor image

Australia’s government, like many others, strongly recommends preparing with a comprehensive traveler’s insurance plan: “Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel. The Australian Government will not pay for a traveler’s medical expenses overseas or medical evacuation costs…A visit to a doctor in the United States for even minor complaints can cost several hundred dollars, excluding laboratory tests or medication costs.”

19       DON’T LEAVE TRASH IN YOUR CAR  (CANADA)

An article from Canada’s CBC News warns travelers of the legality of civil asset forfeiture—a widespread practice where U.S. police officers confiscate cash during traffic stops—advising that, “if you’re on an American roadway with a full wallet, in the eyes of thousands of cash-hungry cops you’re a rolling ATM.” The correspondent has several tips for Canadians who get pulled over on American roads, including “don’t leave litter on the vehicle floor, especially energy drink cans,” and “try not to wear expensive designer clothes.”

20       PAY YOUR TRAFFIC TICKETS (GERMANY)
handing-over-money

Germany urges people to pay their fines for traffic violations: “If you have received a citation (‘Ticket’) for parking, speeding, or something similar: Please pay it!” It begs the question—are traffic tickets optional in Germany?

Australian Christmas Traditions

Australian Christmas Traditions

Australia is the Land Down Under, where the seasons are opposite to Americans. When Australians celebrate Christmas on December 25, it is during summer vacation. So while North Americans look forward to a White Christmas, Australians love to be outside to surf, swim, and grill meals outdoors. Here are some ways to know it’s Christmas downunder..

Christmas in Summer

Sydney, Melbourne & Fiji bondi beach sydney australia goway

Instead of frozen hands, wool sweaters and scarves, expect your Australian Christmas to be full of sunshine, beaches and short sleeves.

Sand, Surf and Santa

aussie air pass melbourne-sunset-australia

Going to a Christmas Party? You will probably be asked to bring cold beers, a hat, and sunscreen. Hitting the beach is a beloved Christmas tradition as Aussies seek respite from the sweltering heat and make the most of their time off by relaxing near the coast.

Christmas Pudding? Naw, it’s cherry Picking & berry time

The Aussie summer in December means that the orchards flourish and stores and markets are filled to the brim with sweet and fresh stone fruit which inevitably end up in the fruit bowl and served fresh in desserts  on Christmas day and throughout the summer period.

Bring a Plate

For Australians, the invitation to “bring a plate” means to bring a plate with food, not just an empty plate!  Aussies love a get together and opening their homes up to others – “Bringing a plate” simplifies the meal planning, opens up conversations about recipes, culinary techniques and traditions (since Australians come from everywhere around the world) and shares the responsibility of catering usually leaving the host to be able to spend more time entertaining.

Abbreviating every word – even “Christmas”

Christmas-gifts3

Something an Aussie would say: “Can you head down to the bottle-o down the road this arvo to grab a few bevvies before Chrissy dinner? You can grab a prezzy for Tommo while you’re there. Oh, and can you  fill up the car at the servo too?”

Translation:

“Would you mind making a trip to the bottle shop down the road later this afternoon to purchase some beverages before Christmas dinner?  You can pick up a present for Tom while you are there. While you are out, would you mind also filling up the car gas?

Bare feet

10 Tips for Traveling Abroad misc-vacation

Being relaxed is a well known Aussie trait that carries over into footwear as well. While lots of public areas (pubs, shopping centres) require you to wear footwear for your own safety, some Australians generally take this as a guideline rather than a hard and fast rule.

If looking for their thongs (flip-flop sandals) is all a bit too hard, going barefoot is the next best option.

Reindeer Sleighs??? No, Kangaroo-driven sleighs of course!

You will see Christmas lights and decorations pulling sleighs, but with Kangaroos, not reindeers! It’s Australia, what else would you expect?

Day 1 Sydney – Port Macquarie

As this holiday departs at 7.30am from Rydges Sydney Central, accommodation will need to be pre-booked for the previous night.

Leave Sydney today bound for the renowned Hunter Valley. One of Australia’s major wine regions, its viticultural history dates back to the early 1800s. It’s known for varietals such as Semillon and Shiraz, and is home to numerous wineries, including world-renowned brands and family-run boutique operations. Visit a vineyard to enjoy an exclusive wine- tasting, and get to know your fellow travellers over lunch. Continue north to the seaside town of Port Macquarie. Best-known for its extensive beaches and waterways, Port Macquarie is also emerging as a vibrant cultural hub with many art galleries. It is also rich in convict history.

Hotel: Waters Edge, Port Macquarie

Included Meals: Lunch and dinner with wine

Day 2 – 3 Port Macquarie – Gold Coast

Day 2: Port Macquarie – Gold Coast

Travel on this morning to Cape Byron Lighthouse to experience superb views over the Pacific Ocean. Standing on a rocky headland with a precipitous cliff on the east side, and a sheer hundred-meter drop to the waters below, Cape Byron Lighthouse is the easternmost point in Australia. At the right time of year you may spot migrating whales breaching not far offshore. A scenic coastal drive this afternoon takes you to the legendary holiday destination of the Gold Coast, famed for its long sandy beaches, elaborate system of inland canals and waterways, and world-class surf breaks. Settle in for your two-night stay.

Day 4 – 5   Gold Coast – Noosa

Day 4: Gold Coast – Noosa

Head north this morning, stopping in Brisbane for a short orientation tour of the vibrant state capital, then continue to Australia Zoo, made famous by the late Steve Irwin and his family. Enjoy a sneak peek into the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and see how AAT Kings works with its Wildlife Warriors to support the koala rehabilitation project at the hospital, the country’s largest and busiest wildlife facility. Your final destination today is the beachside resort town of Noosa. Although reports of the area can be traced back to Captain Cook’s voyages in May 1770, European settlement in the region did not proceed for almost a century. Unfortunately much of the culture and presence of the traditional owners of the Noosa district has been lost during the short period of white settlement, but there are still subtle reminders, such as ‘canoe trees’, middens and stone carvings. Join your fellow travelers for dinner this evening at a local restaurant.

Day 5: Noosa Free Time

Take time out today to discover Noosa for yourself. Swim in the clear waters of Main Beach, or venture a little further afield on an easy walk along the spectacular headland to Noosa National Park. The Park itself offers many walking tracks affording stunning coastal views and is home to several rare and threatened species. If you’re feeling adventurous, you may like to hire a stand-up paddle-board or take a boat ride on the mysterious and tranquil mirrored waters of the Noosa Everglades, one of Australia’s most beautiful wilderness areas. The shaded waterways and abundant wildlife along the Noosa River will surprise and delight you. This evening, stroll along Hastings Street and dine in one of its many eateries.

Hotel: The Sebel Resort Noosa, 2 nights

Included Meals: Day 4: Breakfast and dinner with wine. Day 5: Breakfast

Day 6 Noosa – Fraser Island

Today cross the Great Sandy Strait by ferry to explore the wonders of World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island. Its striking blue freshwater lakes, crystalline creeks, giant dunes and lush rainforests combine to create a unique, enigmatic environment. 15 Amazing Things To Come Out Of Australia

15 Amazing Things To Come Out Of Australia
australia-sydney5-travelteam (2)

Australia is full of amazing things. With such a huge territory, vast landscape, mix of cultures, so many interesting things come from the land down under. Too many to list them all, but read on to discover 15 things you probably don’t know are from Australia….

1        The Selfie

An Australian man can claim the first written use of the word ‘selfie’, made in a 2002 forum post. From those humble beginnings, we’ve reached a point of full-on selfie saturation in 2017 with space selfies, funeral selfies, plane crash selfies and more.

Need help planning your trip to Australia? Contact a Travel Team Agent today at 1-800-788-0829 for more information!

2  Vegemite

This yeast extract powers the continent. If Australians didn’t have Vegemite on toast for breakfast, it’s very likely the economy would slide into collapse within a week.

3    Baz Luhrmann

This living legend director brought us the fish tank scene in Romeo + Juliet, the cinematic Marmite that is Moulin Rouge! and a 3D version of the Great Gatsby.

5  UGGS

Before they pounded every high-street in every city from London to Timbuktu, Ugg boots were used for decades to keep surfers’ feet warm on Australian beaches.

6   AC/DC

Did you know AC/DC’s Back in Black (1980) is the world’s 2nd-highest ever selling album, only beaten by Michael Jackson’s Thriller? I imagine that’s what lead singer Angus Young says to anyone laughing at him for performing in a school uniform since 1973.

7   Sydney Opera House

With over 1 million roof tiles, and a cost of $102 million to build, which, by the way was paid for largely by a State lottery. The Sydney Opera House is a cross between a spaceship and a giant, crumpled bit of tissue, Sydney Opera House still generates a sense of wonder in all who clap eyes on her.

8  Heath Ledger

Died by accidental overdose in January 2008, and winning an Oscar for the role of the Joker in the Dark Knight, he is a talent to be missed.

Need help planning your trip to Australia? Contact a Travel Team Agent today at 1-800-788-0829 for more information!

9   The Airplane Black Box

The black box is an electronic device used to record both flight data of an aeroplane as well as recordings of pilots’ and internal cock-pit voices. It is compulsory for all large planes to carry a black box. It was invented by Dr David Warren, an Australian scientist. The point of having the black box is to find out information about how a plane crashed.

10  Kylie Minogue

She is known as ‘Kylie”, and no not Kylie jenner. This Aussie pop princess is on first name basis here.

11   Amazing Olympians

The Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 were a triumph, and Australia has produced many a legendary Olympian, including Ian Thorpe (swimming), Cathy Freeman (400 metre sprint) and Dawn Fraser (swimming).

Need help planning your trip to Australia? Contact a Travel Team Agent today at 1-800-788-0829 for more information!

12   Steve Irwin

Steve Irwin died in September 2006 from a stingray barb to the chest while filming a documentary called Ocean’s Deadliest. The much-loved wildlife expert ran Australia Zoo 80 miles north of Brisbane, as well as hosting popular animal show The Crocodile Hunter with his wife Terri.

13  Hot Actors

Ah-hem,..Hugh Jackman? Chris Hemsworth…need we say more?

14  Wi-Fi

How on earth did we survive without Wi-Fi? (Serious question). John O’Sullivan of Melbourne’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation is seen as paving the way for the now-ubiquitous wireless internet technology in the early nineties.

15  Penguins

Penguins are amazing creatures, able to jump up to six feet out of the water and into the air and some can even walk faster than humans. They’re also super cute and the smallest species of penguins, Fairy Penguins, can be found in Australia.

Cheap destinations for 2018 with great weather in March

Cheap destinations for 2018 with great weather in March

The month of March is one of the better months for budget traveler. It’s well before the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere and the winter crowds in the tropical areas are starting to thin out at the same time. Through much of Latin America and Asia you can find perfect weather with off-peak hotel prices and smaller crowds.

Here are some of the best destinations you should visit in 2018 with great weather in March…

The Caribbean

caribbean1-travelteam

If you are mainly looking to relax on a beach in the warm weather then the Caribbean is your best bet in March. There are some of its islands that are expensive, while others continue to be great bargains. The Dominican Republic and Jamaica are pretty cheap in general, with a few resort areas being surprisingly inexpensive.

The cheapest option for most people is going to be an all-inclusive resort. Rates are very competitive so they often only cost a bit more than resorts where everything is sold separately. Specifically on the Dominican Republic and in Mexico near Cancun, you can get an all-inclusive room for two starting not much over US$100 per night in March. Nicer places start closer to US$200 per night for two people, and a great deal when it includes all meals and alcohol.

Cancun, Mexico

aerial beach now cancun all inclusive resorts beach

March is still part of the high season in Cancun and all over the Caribbean, but it’s still very good value and prices are lower than during the Christmas weeks. One of the best things about Cancun holidays is that the airport is the busiest in the entire region so it has more direct flights in from key hubs in North America and Europe than any other destination nearby. This makes flights cheaper and easier to find as well. There are many all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun area.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

March is part of the high season in Punta Cana, but it is the best-value destination in the Caribbean for larger resorts and especially for all-inclusive resorts. The rates drop down in summer as it’s also hotter with some chance of rainfall, so March really is an ideal month to take advantage of the perfect dry weather and reasonable prices.

The resort hotels along the stretch of Punta Cana are large and are also very family oriented so they could be ideal for a holiday with the kids or even the extended family. Since many flights fly in from direct hubs, flights into the Punta Cana airport are also among the cheaper fares into the Caribbean.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Montego Bay Jamaica

Located along the north coast of Jamaica, which has a large and busy airport with direct flights in from many destinations in North America and Europe, hence fares tend to be reasonable. The Montego Bay area has hundreds of hotels in all price ranges, from modest places a few blocks off the beach up to luxury resorts.

Also worth considering is Negril or Ocho Rios,  which are about 90 minutes from the same airport and each has a different feel. All combined there are about 500 hotels to choose from, including many all-inclusive resorts.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

mexico-puertovallarta-travelteam

If you are coming from the western half of the US or Canada, consider Puerto Vallarta. Flights will be shorter and cheaper, and PV has many benefits over the others as well.

Puerto Vallarta is a real historic town with good sights, interesting restaurants, and great shopping. Hotels are up and down the coast, with a new area of posh hotels well north of the airport.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Costa-Rica-beaches-2-500x382-500x315

As one of the most popular provinces in Costa Rica, Guanacaste is a tropical paradise with a pristine shoreline, beautiful mountain ranges and a number of volcanoes. Visitors are drawn to the long summer days, active culture and unparalleled wildlife. Located in the far northwest corner of Costa Rica, Guanacaste’s geographical features are diverse and exotic.

The Liberia Airport is very close to the Guanacaste beach resort communities, so it’s convenient for flying into.

Hotels here run the gamut of prices, from simple and traditional beach shacks all the way up to posh chain hotels with all the luxuries. You don’t have to spend much to enjoy the friendly towns and great March weather.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

argentina-buenosaires-travelteam

Even though March is actually the wettest month in Buenos Aires, visitors are unlikely to notice because rainfall is fairly consistent through the year. The temperatures in March are pretty much ideal and many South American tourists have gone back home by now so hotel prices are a bit lower.

Buenos Aires can be compared it to Europe since that’s how it looks and feels, which still makes it a wonderful bargain. Food and drinks are notoriously good and cheap so you will feel like you are splurging even while keeping your budget low.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Tenerife is the most popular part of the Canary Islands (off the coast of Africa) for English-speaking tourists, but there are other options with similar weather and prices. It’s not as warm in March as most other places on this list, though at least it’s fast and cheap to reach by plane from Europe, which isn’t true of the others. Compared to Europe, this island is a relative bargain, which helps make it popular pretty much all year round.

Rome, Italy

rome-italy

Since Rome’s top attractions such as the Vatican Museum and Ancient Rome can be so insanely crowded during the warmer months, March is pretty much perfect for a visit for most people. The crowds are still far smaller than during summer and hotel prices are still way down as well. You can even wander a bit off the beaten track and feel like you are one of the only tourists in town.

Flights to Rome are also reasonably priced in March, so it is a good time to begin a trip here. Easter brings crowds and the city fills up, so March is your best bet.

Split, Croatia

Croatia & Slovenia split1 croatia gate 1

Most people are aware of Dubrovnik, which is a bit down the coast of Croatia from Split and just a bit warmer as well. But Dubrovnik’s historic center is also much smaller and far more expensive than Split’s, so many people prefer going here instead. The March weather is pleasant, even if you’ll need to wear a jacket or sweater still.

Split is actually even a bit older than Dubrovnik and the white-on-white city center is very similar. Better still, Split is a real city where tourists eat among locals and there is always something going on. Dubrovnik’s walled city is almost 100% tourists, so it feels more artificial even though it’s quite impressive. You can visit both if you are in the area, and hotel rates this time of year are very reasonable. Local apartment rentals called “sobes” are abundant and usually cheaper than hotels.

Paris, France

Hotel rates in March are quite reasonable in Paris, and airfares are modest as well. This city just doesn’t get much rain at any time during the year, and March is yet another fairly dry month, so you can probably leave the umbrella at home. The most popular attractions such as the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower are less crowded as well. Consider a Paris Pass if you intend on hitting many of the top attractions in only a few days.

You Might like:

Malaga, Spain

malaga spain offical site

The best March climate in Spain can be found in the historic city of Malaga along the Mediterranean coast. This is the gateway to the Costa del Sol resort towns, but those tend to be very quiet this time of year so staying in Malaga itself is probably a better idea.

It’s not quite warm enough for sunbathing in Malaga in March, though it can be close late in the month. Even so, this city has a proper downtown with shopping, restaurants, bars, and other attractions. Flights into Malaga are fairly cheap this time of year, and if you are coming from Madrid they can be even cheaper than the train, depending on when you buy.

Reykjavik, Iceland

iceland-travelteam

March is the last full month of the best Northern Lights viewing, which is best done in smaller towns and rural areas far away from Reykjavik itself. Some people visit Iceland in December, January, or February for the Northern Lights, but you can’t do much else in those months because the days are so short. In March the sun is out for around 12 hours each day, although it is low in the sky.

Another reason to visit Iceland in March is that it’s before the busy summer season begins so you won’t be competing with all of the other tourists. Hotel rates are more affordable, although prices have been going up so even the cheaper places may feel a bit expensive at this point. Still, this is an amazing island and it becomes the favorite destination in the world for many who visit, including yours truly.

Tired of the long security lines and parking jams? Book a flight for Wednesday. It seems that Wednesday is the best day of the week to travel, according to data collected during a recent study, with the highest number of happy travelers.

70 million passengers at 100 airports all over the world ranked Hump Day number one day for travel. It’s been thought as the easiest day for getting through an airport since 2013. Early birds who travel between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. will find their time at the airport even shorter.

Airport Secrets Only Insiders Know

Airport Secrets Only Insiders Know

Airports often mean long lines, big crowds and headaches for travelers. Frequent travelers and insiders know the secrets to traveling and avoiding the headaches most normal travelers experience. If you want to travel like the pros, here are 20 airport secrets and travel tips from the insiders.

  1. Global Entry and TSA PreCheck Are Totally Worth It

You could be one of the many travelers dealing with long waits to get through security, or take a tip from insiders by taking advantage of Global Entry and TSA Pre Check  for faster screening. Because you are what’s known as a Trusted Traveler, you can skip security lines at the airport and don’t have to take off your shoes or remove your 3-1-1 liquids bag.

  1. Sign Up for Airline Rewards Programs

Even if you don’t fly often, you could benefit from signing up for airline rewards programs. After just a few flights, you might have enough miles or points to get them redeemed for free or low-cost travel. You might not even have to use the same airline to redeem your miles.

  1. Don’t Check Your Bags

Carry on luggage

Pack like a pro and only take carry-on bags when you travel. Checking your bags can mean waiting in lines, and there’s a risk of having your luggage get lost or even stolen. By carrying on your bags, you save time and ensure your stuff arrives with you.

  1. Some Airport Lounges Are Available to Certain Credit Card Holders

Airport lounges aren’t just for the rich and famous. Many credit cards and airline loyalty programs provide free or discounted access to airport lounges. You can relax in a lounge and avoid the hustle and bustle, and enjoy complimentary beverages and snacks. Call your credit card company ahead of time to see if you’re eligible.

  1. Pack Only What You Need
business packing suit

Ask yourself if you really need everything. When packing, think about exactly what situation you’ll want a certain item of clothing, that why you can avoid bring things you won’t need and save space.

  1. Fly Off-Season for the Best Deals

Airport insiders know that traveling off-season is where the best deals are. Typically, traveling at off-peak times — for example, during rainy season — for your intended destination can save you money. Ask a Travel Team Agent to see when the low season is for what destination you want to go to.

  1. Pack an Empty Water Bottle

We have all stood in line, chugging our water before it is thrown out by the TSA. Instead of paying $5 for a water bottle at the food court, pack an empty water bottle to get your water fix. Airports have water fountains where you can fill up and hydrate before your journey — for free.

  1. Clear Your Cookies Before You Book a Flight
cell-phone-in-flight

If you’ve ever searched for a flight and then, not even an hour later, you go to book and the price has increased — blame your internet  cookies. Internet browsers track your activity online and some booking sites might increase the price depending on demand. By clearing your cookies or using a private browser when booking a flight  might help you get a lower price.

  1. Bring Your Own Headphones
laptop-on-plane

Not all airlines offer headphones for free. In order to save money and keep yourself entertained during a long flight, pack your own headphones. Bonus perk: You’ll look busy and avoid any unwanted conversations with people in your row.

  1. Avoid Baggage Fees by Gate-Checking Your Bags
misc3-travelteam-250x190

Baggage fees are the norm these days— charging $25 or more for your checked bags. One way to try and avoid baggage fees is by checking your bags at the gate, though check ahead of time to make sure the airline doesn’t charge for gate-checking, too.

Many airlines ask for volunteers to check their bags as there’s simply not enough room in the plane for everyone’s baggage. This tactic is an insider loophole that could potentially get your bags checked for free.

  1. Fly on a Tuesday for the Best Deals
airplane3-travelteam

The weekend is prime travel time for many, which equals  higher prices and large crowds. For the best travel deals, fly on a Tuesday instead. For an even better deal, consider flying at non-peak times — such as early morning or a red-eye flight.

  1. Four Wheels Are Better Than Two

A suitcase with four wheels can be better than two. Avoid dragging your bag and push it in front of you. This way, you can navigate tight spaces and have more control over your bag, making it easier to travel and get through the airport.

  1. Download Your Airline’s App
laptop-planning-travel-tips-computer-cellphone

By downloading your airline’s app you can usually enjoy paperless boarding and get real-time updates about any flight delays, changes or updates. Having a mobile boarding pass can help you save time — and some trees.

  1. Wear Slip-On Shoes

Make your life a little easier and wear slip-on shoes. Slip-on, slip-off. This simple travel hack can keep the line moving and make going through security a little less painful.

  1. Pack Your Own Food

Instead of paying high prices at the airport, pack your own food instead. Think sandwiches, fruit, crackers and granola bars — check with the TSA first to make sure your menu follows security guidelines. This travel tip can help you save money and your appetite.

  1. Spend Money to Save Money

Airport shops tend to raise prices on items, but not always. Some areas, like Portland, Ore., forbid shops to charge more for goods and services. In addition, some states, like Oregon, have no sales tax. If you’re thinking of shopping at the airport, compare prices online and check tax laws before you travel.

  1. Pick an Aisle Seat

Brrrrr. Opt for an aisle seat to stay warm. Bonus: You won’t have to climb over anyone to go to the bathroom.

  1. Bring the Sanitizer

Be sure to bring hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes to kill germs and avoid illness. One area not to miss: Your tray table. Tray tables might not be cleaned between flights, so sanitize your tray before you use it.

  1. Know Your Airport Code
travel insurance airport-travelteam

Before arriving at the airport, know your airport code — the three letters that refer to your destination, such as LAX. Some cities have multiple airports and your luggage tags can get mixed up if you’re not sure where you’re headed.

  1. Get Social

One of the best travel tips for saving money is to get social. Follow various airlines, airports and airline booking sites on social media, like Twitter and Facebook, to get promo codes, discounts and insider tips.
