Enjoy spectacular city views from your included visit to Mt Eden, as well as historic Parnell Village. You’ll also explore some of the surrounding rainforest, including the black sand beach where ‘The Piano’ was filmed.

The North Island of New Zealand is a geology geek’s paradise. Believed to be over two million years old, the Waitomo Caves are a major draw for visitors fascinated by their large population of glowworms and beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations. You’ll have the chance to explore them on your way to Rotorua, where spouting geysers and boiling mudpools showcase geothermal New Zealand at its best. An included tour of this area includes Rainbow Springs, Te Whakarewarewa thermal reserve and Te Puia Rotorua. Cap off your sightseeing with a traditional Maori concert and Hangi (feast) for a taste of New Zealand’s indigenous culture.

A Mecca for skiers, Queenstown puts you in the heart of the South Island’s mountain landscape. Less active travelers can enjoy an optional scenic helicopter flight, jetboat trip or Gondola ride to take in the sights. An included day trip takes you to Milford Sound, a breathtaking, 16km long fjord carved by glaciers out to the Tasman Sea. Your onward journey to Christchurch also passes Lake Wanaka and includes a stop at majestic Mount Cook, known to the Maori people as ‘Cloud Piercer’.

Christchurch was devastated by four large earthquakes between September 2010 and December 2011. But while some areas and attractions remain closed for repairs, there is still plenty for the visitor to do and see if time allows. The Air Force Museum will thrill military history buffs, while the Canterbury Museum provides a fascinating look at New Zealand history. Or take a tour of sites affected by the quakes for a glimpse of a resilient, rebuilding Christchurch.

Free day in Queenstown

Although celebrated as New Zealand’s ‘adventure capital’ Queenstown offers far more than a fast paced action-packed holiday. Settled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath a soaring panorama of the Remarkables Mountain Range, this alpine town is surrounded by a plethora of historic, gastronomic and scenic wonders. Head down the Gibbston valley wine trail to sample some of the region’s best Pinot or catch a ride on the 100 year old Steamship – the TSS Earnslaw –  to Walter Peak Station for dinner and a farm tour. Browse the waterfront cafes and have lunch at Michelin star chef Josh Emett’s ‘Rata.’ Check out nearby historic Arrowtown and enhance your experience with a four wheel drive trip to Macetown. Take a leisurely lakeside stroll or ride the gondola for breathtaking views. Venture further afield into the Fiordland National Park or head over the Crown Range to Wanaka. Drive through Lord Of The Rings country – or for the really fanatic, jump aboard one of many dedicated LOTR tours. And after all of that – if you do really want the adrenaline rush Queenstown is known for, take your pick from the Shotover Jet, Nevis Bungy, Canyon Swing, Zipline, Luge or White Water rafting.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY – Arrowtown and Wanaka Half Day Tour

Your day begins in historic Arrowtown, a site swarmed firstly by European gold prospectors in the 1860’s, then by 5000 Chinese who were invited to try their luck amongst the leftovers! You’ll walk amongst the tiny restored cottages of their settlement and wander down the main street of this exquisite little town with its charm of historic buildings that will make you feel like you walked on to a movie set. Then it’s onto Wanaka, which was historically used by Maori as a pathway to greenstone sites and later by goldminers for accommodation close to Cardrona claims, today Wanaka has branded itself as a lifestyle reserve; rich in family adventures, eco-tours, recreational trails and nearby skifields, it is surrounded by huge mountains and massive glaciers. You will be taken to visit ‘That Wanaka Tree’, which grows within the lake. Then, you will have one hour of free time to wander Wanaka at your whim, maybe you’ll look around the shops, sit and have an icecream by the lake, or go for a walk along the lake path. It’s time to head back towards Queenstown via the Crown Range, New Zealand’s highest sealed road. The Crown Range is usually covered in snow in winter and boasts some incredible viewing platforms. But before you do, there is still one famous stop to make. Built in 1863 to service gold prospectors, is Cardrona Hotel. It is one of New Zealand’s oldest pubs, and possibly the most well-known. Pop in and explore, and your guide will shout you a beer or soft drink to enjoy in the beer garden or by the fire.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY – TSS Earnslaw cruise to Walter Peak including gourmet BBQ dinner and a farm tour

The seasonal menu includes an expansive array of local produce, including succulent meats cooked on the outdoor rotisserie and a selection of delicious vegetables and salads. Finish your meal with an irresistible dessert, New Zealand cheeses and freshly brewed tea and coffee. After dinner, an entertaining and informative demonstration gives you a glimpse of life in the high country.

On your cruise home, enjoy the camaraderie of a singalong with the ship’s pianist or breathe in the fresh night air as you watch the lights of Queenstown draw nearer.

How To Plan The Perfect Cruise Vacation

How To Plan The Perfect Cruise Vacation

A cruise vacation is one of the most exciting ways to travel. You get the relaxation of a guided vacation and it is a wonderful way to sample the locales of an entire region, rather than have to stick to one city. By planning in advance, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful, stress-free cruise vacation.

STEP 1

Pick the time of year you’d like to cruise. Do you want to go during summer, or do you want a holiday cruise? Cruising during a certain month may save you money if a location experiences rains or cold temperatures. This is also known as ‘shoulder’ season. Some of the best year-round destinations are Hawaii, Asia, the Caribbean, Riviera Maya (Mexico), South Asia, and the South Pacific.

Always ask a Travel Team Agent for the best time of year by calling 1-800-788-0829

STEP 2

Consider where you would like to cruise. Not sure where you want to go? Ask yourself what you want to do and what you prefer most. Do you want warm weather or are you more interested in cities and culture? Do you want an Ocean or a River Cruise? Do you hope to relax on board the cruise, get out into jungles or mountains or take up a new surfing hobby while cruising?

STEP 3

Read reviews of cruise routes and cruise companies. Determine if you want a budget cruise or a luxury cruise. Begin to put together a budget for your cruise, once you’ve narrowed down the time and location. Ask a Travel Team Agent for more information at 1-800-788-0829.

STEP 4

Look into prices. You can search Internet travel booking sites and individual cruise company websites to get an idea of prices. Or even better, visit http://travteam.wpengine.com/cruises/ to search cruises. We have cruise vacations to just about anywhere, and we will always search to find you the best rates.

STEP 5

Book a cruise when you’ve committed to a destination and time frame. If you have a flexible schedule, you can save on a last-minute deal or by going during “shoulder” times.

STEP 6

Ask about airfare, if it does not come with your cruise package. Determine whether you would like to stay for a few extra days before or after your cruise to check out the sites on land. Some cruises have shore excursions included, Ask a Travel Team Agent for more information at 1-800-788-0829.

STEP 7

Review cruise brochures to plan your travel excursions. Have a Travel Team Agent

book shore excursions before you cruise; some excursions may sell out. Ask a Travel Team Agent for more information at 1-800-788-0829.

  1. Yeah nah – “Do you want a vanilla ice cream? “Yeah nah, I’ll be right.”

Kiwis say this when they are a little indecisive on what the heck they are trying to say.

  1. Bugger all – “How much money you got? Bugger all.”

This is used when you have nothing left.

  1. Bugger – *Something goes wrong* “Bugger!”

You can use bugger when something goes wrong. It’s mostly heard on a farm. It’s basically a NZ curse word.

  1. Chur – “Here’s a drink” “Chur”

This word can be slapped around in many different ways. Sometimes it’s attached to another word or used by itself. It can mean sweet, awesome, yeah, good, cool, cheers.

  1. Bro & cuz – “Chur cuz” or “How’s it going bro?”

Basically means the same thing and rarely referring to an actual brother or cousin.

  1. The wops – “He lives out in the wops”

A place in the middle of nowhere or far from anything.

  1. Carked it – “Did you know Jimmy carked it the other day?” or “The car carked it”

This is a little depressing, but it is usually used when something or someone dies.

  1. Munted – “That guy is munted as” or “I crashed my car and it’s munted”

This word has two meanings: when something is broken or when someone is drunk.

  1. Chocka – “Have you had enough to eat?” “Yeah, I’m chocka block” or “Can you fit this into your car?” “Nah, it’s chocka”

Sometimes used with the word ‘block’ at the end. It can mean when something or someone is full.

  1. Sus – “He looks a bit sus” or “That’s a bit sus”

When a situation or someone is practically suspicious.

  1. Piece of piss – “Can you build this Lego man for me? “Yeah, it’s a piece of piss”

If you’re being unreasonable then this is usually what you will hear.

  1. Piss/ Piss up – “Can you grab the piss out of the Ute?” or “I’m just going to go take a piss” or “Let’s have a piss-up”

Piss usually referring to either alcohol or urine. The word piss-up refers to a party.

  1. Keen – “Do you wanna go to the pools bro?” “Keen”

Used when someone is enthusiastic about something.

  1. Jandals – “Don’t wear sneakers, wear your jandals”

In other words flip flops, thongs (Australian) or sandals. Not only are they used for wearing purposes but also used as a weapon if someone has been a dick.

  1. Skux – “You look skux today” “Thanks bro”

This word has many meanings. The most popular is when someone looks cool or trendy. Sometimes it can be that a person is looking hot.

  1. Nek minute – “I was at the dairy, nek minute”

A true New Zealand icon is this guy. He created the famous video which has now had over 3 million views. So nek minute basically means ‘next minute’.

  1. Mare – “I’m having a mare today”

This means you’re having a difficult time.

  1. Pack a sad – “That kid is packing a sad”.

Whatever you do don’t do this. Packing a sad means you’re basically having a tantrum.

  1. Gumboots – Chuck on your gumboots and let’s go on the farm”

Also known as wellingtons or rubber boots. As a kid, one of my favourite songs of all time was the gumboot song!

  1. Beached as – “I can’t get off my bed, I’m beached as bro!”

Referring to the cartoon where a whale is stuck on the beach, it means when you’re stuck somewhere.

  1. Dag – “Linda is a dag”

Dag in this sentence doesn’t mean a piece of old poo hanging from a sheep bum. In this case it means that something or someone is funny.

  1. Skull – “Skull it now!”

In other countries you probably yell “drink” instead of skull when someone is downing a drink. In New Zealand we yell “skull, skull, skull”. So if you hear someone yelling that in a bar, don’t worry they haven’t just found a dead body.

  1. Heaps – “I have heaps of piss bro!”

New Zealanders use this word like it’s going out of fashion. Heaps means lots.

  1. Crack up –“ I got a fine for stealing a piece of grass off my neighbour’s lawn” “That’s a crack up!”

Instead of saying that is funny you could just use the iconic New Zealand slang words ‘crack up’.

  1. Squizz – . “Can I have a squizz at your new kitchen?”

A very odd word in a Kiwis vocabulary I have to agree! This means to have a quick look.

  1. Ta – “Here’s a sandwich” “Ta”

It simply means thanks.

Eating In Italy: A City-by-City Guide

Eating In Italy: A City-by-City Guide
babies_chef_food

You might be expecting pizza and pasta. Be prepared as there is a lot more to Italian food you need to try. Each city and region have different foods; Food can actually be healthy. Italians use seasonal ingredients, lots of fresh vegetables, olive oil instead of butter. So get your taste buds ready (you may need stretchy pants) and prepare for a culinary adventure like no other….

Rome

romecolosseum_44409233_fotoliarf_2969_480x340 rome collette tours

Do as the Romans do and you will will eat meals that are heavier on meat and butter. If you want pasta,  pack  your stretchy pants – you will want to eat pasta, lots of pasta. A good tip is to start off with an espresso, but skip the croissant. Instead, save the calories for lunch and dinner.

Dig into plates of cacio e pepe (pasta with cheese and pepper), twirl your fork around strands of spaghetti alla carbonara (there’s no cream in the real deal), or dive into a richly satisfying bowl of bucatini all’amatriciana (red sauce with pecorino cheese and guanciale). Street food is also popular. Try porchetta sandwiches, supplì (fried rice balls), and pizza al taglio (thick crust pizza sold by the slice).

Florence

florence-italy-travelteam

Florence is The Renaissance capital of the world, full of stunning architecture and priceless artwork. Here. food is humble and based on traditional peasant meals. Try Bistecca alla Fiorenttina, a large steak, fire grilled on the outside and pink and bloody on the inside, seasoned with salt, pepper, a squeeze of lemon and traditionally cooked over roasted chestnuts for a smoky flavor. Lampredotto It is a sandwich made with thinly sliced tripe (intestines) that’s been boiled in broth, seasoned, and served either on a plate or in a sandwich. You can order it with spicy red sauce or herbal green sauce.

Italy Is famous for gelato, and Florence has some of the best in Italy. When looking for good gelato in Italy, avoid the sellers you see on the streets, trying to attract tourists with mountains of bright, artificially colored gelato, piled high with over-the-top garnishes. Small batch is the way to go.

Venice

venice2-italy-travelteam

Venice is made up of small streets and canals makes it one of the top destinations in Italy. There are still plenty of mom & pop restaurants that serve up local fare. For the best meal, take a step away from the Grand Canal and head towards the back streets.

Skip the pizza – a ban on most wood-fired ovens on the island make it one of the worst places in the country for a traditional pie. Instead, devour cicchetti (Italian-style tapas). Choose from small bites of fresh fish, cheese, and deep-fried goodness paired with an Aperol Spritz for the perfect canal-side lunch.

Bring cash, as many of the small bars don’t accept credit cards.

Bologna

If meat and cheese are your two favorite food groups, you’ll eat like a king in Bologna. Given its status as the world’s oldest college town, there are plenty of gut busting but extraordinarily delicious cheap eats, as well as high-end dining options in the medieval city. Make sure to leave room for a rich dinner of pasta bolognese, the city’s signature dish.

Milan

italy-milan-travelteam

Milan is the fashion capital of Italy, and the most cosmopolitan city in the country. Here, it’s less about grandma’s casual kitchen, and more about traditional dining. Since it is located in the north, butter, rice and meat rule menus as opposed to basil and pasta.

Must-try dishes include risotto milanese flavored with saffron, pan fried veal cutlet, polenta, and Osso Buco (slow roasted veal shank).

Naples

mini-pizza-spatula

Naples is the city where pizza was born. The story goes that the pizza we know and devour today comes from some traditional flatbread recipes that were prepared in Naples in the 18th century. The food of Naples is uncomplicated, and street food and homey trattorias rule the city. Classic oasta dishes here include seafood; try spaghetti alle vongole and risotto alla pescatora are typical dishes. Pasta e faigioli is a pasta and bean soup which is a classic dish, but here, the Neapolitan version is made with hot pepper and crushed mixed pasta.

Italians from any region will tell you, there’s nothing in the world like Neapolitan pastry. The pastries most synonymous with Naples are the intricate shell-shaped sfogliatelle — made of dozens of layers of delicate pastry — and the rum-soaked baba, a Neapolitan twist on the German cake known as kugelhupf.
