This 9-day Locally Escorted Group Tour includes specially selected accommodations, quality transportation, sightseeing, special culinary experiences and a knowledgeable Tour Escort. The tour of this fairytale land is filled with exquisite natural scenery. You will spend the first night in the capital, Reykjavik. The following morning, you will commence your tour through Iceland’s wonders.
During your week in Iceland you will see geothermal regions with geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, glaciers, coastal fjords, volcanic formations and exotic National Parks. You will have the opportunity to visit the Geysir hot springs and the waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. You will see the largest mass of lava on earth at Eldhraun, and visit the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, the birthplace of icebergs.
Other highlights include Dettifoss, home to Iceland’s most powerful waterfall and the peculiar lava formations at Dimmborgir. Akureyri holds some of the finest examples of timber buildings in the country, while Hrutey Island nurtures a protected nature reserve where salmon swim freely. You will see Iceland’s largest lake, Lake Thingvallavatn and in Thingvellir National Park, visit the ancient site of the world’s first outdoor parliament.
Day 1 Arrival in Reykjavik Overnight stay in Reykjavik (airport transfer not included). Duration 1 Night Accommodation Icelandairhotel Reykjavik Natura Day 2 Reykjavik to Vik Start the day with a short city sightseeing of Reykjavik. From Reykjavik, head through the village of Hverageroi to explore Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall”, and the nearby Geysir hot spring area to see the famous Geysir and Strokkur, and numerous other hot springs and boiling mud pools. Continue along the south shore and stop to admire the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss before continuing to Dyrholaey nature reserve. Continue to the village of Vik. Dinner and overnight stay in the Vik area. Please note: Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season in spring, mid May until June 23rd. Meal Plan Breakfast and Dinner Duration 1 Night Accommodation Hotel Edda Vik Day 3 Vik – Hofn Cross Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on the face of the earth, before reaching the small town Kirkjubajarklaustur, a former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent. The tour continues over Skeioararsandur sands to Skaftafell National Park. Continue to the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon to see the birthplace of icebergs. Throughout the day we are afforded magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajokull Glacier. Dinner and overnight stay in the Hofn area. Meal Plan Breakfast and Dinner Duration 1 Night Accommodation Hotel Hofn Day 4 Hofn – Egilsstaoir Drive from Hofn through Almannaskaro pass, stop and admire the majestic coastline. Continue to the towering mountains plunging vertically into the sea that form the magnificent East Fjords. Explore Petra’s renowned collection of local stones and minerals. Dinner and overnight stay in the Egilsstaoir area. Meal Plan Breakfast and Dinner Duration 1 Night Accommodation Icelandair Hotel Herad Day 5 Lake Myvatn Area Explore the empty vastness of the highland desert plateau Moorudalsorafi, heading to the Lake Myvatn area. On the way, a stop at Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Onwards to Namaskaro pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colors. Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Myvatn area, including the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudo craters at Skutustaoir and Laxa salmonriver. One of Myvatn area’s claims to fame is that it is home to more species of ducks than any other place on Earth, with very diverse birdlife in general. Dinner and overnight stay in the Myvatn area. Meal Plan Breakfast and Dinner Duration 1 Night Accommodation Selhotel Myvatn Day 6 Lake Myvatn Area – Akureyri – Siglufjordur Breakfast at your hotel. Start the day by exploring the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Visit the magnificent Godafoss waterfall and the old turf farm Laufas. Afterwards, visit Akureyri, the colourful northern “capital” of Iceland. The town has charming buildings and beautiful view of the Eyjafjordur Fjord. After spending some time in Akureyri, continue along the coastal roads of Eyjafjordur and the Troll Peninsula. This is a beautiful drive along steep mountains with amazing views over the Arctic Sea and black sand coastline. The destination is Siglufjordur, set in a beautiful fjord of the same name. This town has some of the finest timber buildings in the country, beautifully restored to their original glory. The evening and dinner is on your own at one of the town’s restaurants. Siglufjordur is a very enjoyable and friendly town for an evening stroll. Meal Plan Breakfast Duration 1 Night Accommodation Siglo Hotel Day 7 Skagafjordur – Borgarnes Majestic mountains and narrow passes lead to Skagafjordur for an introduction of the unique Icelandic horse that has a special fifth gait – the tolt. Towards the village of Blonduos built on both sides of the river Blanda with Hrutey Island a protected nature reserve located in this popular salmon river. Cross the Holtavorduheidi plateau through Borgarfjordur to the beautiful town of Borgarnes. Dinner and overnight stay in Borgarnes area. Meal Plan Breakfast and Dinner Duration 1 Night Accommodation Icelandair Hotel Hamar Day 8 Borgarfjordur – Reykjavik Drive to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in the world. A stop will be made to admire the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfalls, before continuing via Hvalfjorour fjord to Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest lake, and Thingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world’s first parliament held outdoors.
