Bay of plenty New Zealand Long Stay

When 18th century explorer Captain James Cook sailed here he aptly named it the Bay of Plenty. One of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations and a thriving port city, the Bay continues to offer its bounty of beaches, culture and lifestyle to visitors from near and far.

The region is blessed with a mild climate year-round. The vast harbour, islands and proximity to the open sea ensure that seafood is a local specialty. The region’s legendary beaches swimmers, surfers and kayakers year round and accommodations  make the most of the great coastal views.

There are plenty of things to do in the Bay of Plenty. Choose from water adventures like white-water rafting, kayaking, dolphin encounters, parasailing and jetboating. There’s also skydiving, scenic flights, horse treks, cultural experiences, golf courses and a variety of gardens and museums to peruse.

Whether you’re after relaxation, beach life or a bit of indulgence, the Bay of Plenty has all the bases covered. The suburb of Mount Maunganui has been well-regarded for years for its top beaches and coastal lifestyle. Many New Zealanders own holiday homes at “The Mount” as it is known. The beaches are numerous and safe for swimmers and surfers. The top spot for swimming is Main Beach, which is located at the foot of the mighty Mauao (Mount Maunganui) and faces the Pacific Ocean. On the opposite side of Mauao is the harbourside Pilot Bay, which is a launching pad for boats and kayaks. It’s also a shallow swimming spot ideal for families.

Mauao is the physical focal point of the coastal Bay of Plenty – a sacred place that dominates the landscape of the Tauranga area.  Walking up and around Mauao is a must-do activity in the region. Across from the Main Beach is a number of cafés to enjoy a meal or coffee while taking in the ambience of the area. Maunganui Road in the downtown Mount Maunganui area is also popular with boutique shopping and top restaurants and cafés.

Days 4- 30/58: Enjoy your vacation

The days are free to enjoy your New Zealand Snowbird Vacation.  At your fingertips you have the services of the Goway office in Sydney, they are available 24-7 for emergencies and during Australian business hours for advice.  Mount Maunganui is a holiday paradise – you can surf, swim, play golf, shop, dine or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere. There’s no pressure here, just take your time to enjoy the pace of life you want.  It is almost surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and has New Zealand’s best beach on one side of the peninsula and the sheltered waters of Pilot Bay on the other.  Relax on the wide expanse of white sand and swim in the warm ocean waves. This is a great place to kick back and people watch. Numerous beach, ocean and multisport events are held here and people of all ages enjoy the Main Beach year-round.

And overlooking it all towers the mountain itself – Mauao.   Standing 232m above sea level, this iconic landmark is treasured by Maori and locals alike. Mauao means ‘caught be the dawn’ and the mountain is steeped in Maori history and mythology. Several historical pa sites (villages) have been built on this extinct volcanic cone, the evidence of which can still be seen today as you explore the popular walking tracks.

Stroll and choose a table at any number of beachside cafes and restaurants. This relaxed al-fresco dining precinct is the perfect place to enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch in the sunshine.   You’ll find some of the best boutique shopping in New Zealand.  Explore Mount Maunganui’s main street which features more than 30 specialist women’s clothing stores (including many high-end fashion boutiques). Gift shops, souvenirs plus contemporary and fine art galleries sit alongside 60 different cafes, bars and fine-dining restaurants.

If you want a truly relaxing break, make sure you visit the Mt Maunganui Hot Salt Water Pools. Nestled right at the base of Mauao, soak in the warm healing water to help relieve any aches and pains. The children’s pool and slide area makes it a great family-friendly outing.

Mauao also marks the entrance to Tauranga’s harbour and the port has become the largest cruise tour port destination in New Zealand. Watching luxury cruise ships sail in and out of Pilot Bay is a fun way to spend a summer’s evening. Enjoy a picnic dinner and be impressed by the sheer size of these vessels as they draw closer to shore.

Day 31 or 59: New Zealand to the West Coast

Today is your day to return North America. You will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. You will also cross the International Dateline again and regain your lost day!  If you have the time, why not consider another Snowbird Idea to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Central Coast of New South Wales or the Cook Islands?
