Money Saving Tips When Visiting Australia
Traveling in Australia can be pricey. Not everything you do in Australia has to break the bank. There are ways you can save money during your trip and we put together a quick guide on how you can save money while in Australia…
Get a phone plan
These days every one has their cellphone with them and wants to stay in touch with family and friends. You might want to check in on family, call a taxi or local places where you are staying. Roaming costs on your cell phone can be very expensive. Consider signing up for a local phone package with a company like Telestra. You want a great phone package with great coverage throughout the country. Or contact your carrier and ask if they offer phone plans while you travel so you don’t incur high roaming fees.
Don’t Tip
It isn’t really customary to tip an extra 10 or 20 percent in Australia. Hospitality workers are paid a dignified wage in Australia, so there’s no need to tip like you would in somewhere like the United States.
Eat cheap meals
Eat at a pub – you will not only get a great cultural experience, but most pubs do food specials too.
Catch an Uber
Taxis in Sydney are expensive. When public transport isn’t an option – especially after midnight, when Sydney’s train and bus services stop for the night – an Uber will almost always be a cheaper and more pleasant experience than trying to hail a cab.
Go to a free museum
The Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Maritime Museum, The Rocks Discovery Museum, the Nicholson Museum packed full of antiquities – you can visit all of these terrific museums around Sydney without having to part with a cent, which is like Christmas for penny-pinching sight-seers.
Hit up the great outdoors
There are so many gorgeous attractions in Austrlia, and the beaches are heavenly. Check out Bondi, Manly, Coogee, Cronulla, Bronte, Balmoral, Tamarama, Freshwater, the list goes on – and it doesn’t cost to visit any of them. If sun, surf and sand isn’t your cup of tea, there’s no shortage of parks and cycling routes to enjoy.
Avoid Convenience Stores
The streets around Circular Quay and The Rocks are littered with convenience stores selling disposable souvenirs and overpriced food and drink – so unless you feel like paying $6 for a can of Coke and $22.50 for a fridge magnet of a koala, avoid them. Stock up at large supermarket chains Woolworths and Coles to save some coin.
Seek out free internet
The internet in Australia is slow and expensive. You can find WiFi for free at most libraries, McDonalds, and most likely your hotel. If you have questions, ask your travel team agent by calling 1-800-788-0829!
