7 Safe Travel Tips

  1. Leave your valuables at home.

Don’t bring irreplaceable jewelry, non-essential electronic devices, wads of cash or too many credit cards, you only need 2. Don’t risk having something you love lost, stolen or broken.

  1. Keep anything of value on your person or in a safe

Do place valuables in a carry-on or pocket: If you must bring those diamond studs, wear them. Carry the phone and tablet with you. Consider keeping your passport and wallet on you at all times, under your clothes in a traveler belt. Never dangle a purse from the backs of chairs, men’s wallets should be in a front pocket. Don’t place valuables in checked-bags!!

  1. Don’t flash your cash or cards

When you need to take out a credit card out or cash, act as you as would at an ATM. Don’t let others see what you’re doing. Shield your numbers, make sure no one is around you at the ATM. Pick up your card after the transaction and put your cash away immediately. No need to carry a big wad of cash.

  1. Watch for pickpocket scams

The classic distraction or bump is all around. You get distracted, they take your money. Don’t; hand over your camera or phone to the person offering to take a photo for you; ask a fellow tourist or guide. Watch out for the ‘excuse me’ collisions, the women with the baby bumps you, knocks over a glass of wine, and after the stranger leaves, your wallet is gone. Do not leave your cell phone/wallet/passport sitting beside you on a table as you dine or enjoy a drink. Bad guys are skilled at grabbing your valuables before you realize they are gone.

  1. Do a little research

If you’re traveling in another country: Check out The U.S. State Department; there is a travel section with country-by-country listings that include information on staying safe. Read it before you go.

If in your own country: Search your destination by city name plus the words “visitor safety” and you’ll find lots of information; VirtualTourist is one such resource with guides to destinations around the world.

  1. Use your common sense

Common sense is your secret weapon. Trust your gut, fear is a protection mechanism. Stay alert to your surroundings. If you’re walking along a busy tourist area at night and turn down a dark and deserted side street, turn back! If you’re at the airport in a long line for a taxi and someone comes up to you offering a cheap ride, say, no thanks. Why take a chance?

  1. Relax

Bad stuff can happen to even the most experienced of travelers. It is how you deal with it that can make or break a trip. If you prepare ahead to do what you can to avoid problems and relax and roll with the minor issues, you will have a great time.
